Help me mod Oblivion

For those who don't know, Oblivion is on sale on Steam for $8.50. I bought it, like many others.

I always remember people saying "Without mods, it's eh, with mods it's amazing." So, I'm asking for some recommendations on what mods to get to make Oblivion awesome.

Now, this is the first time I'm playing the game, so I don't want anything hugely dramatic. However, the idea of level scaling sounds horrendous so I think I'm going to want to fix that.

Can anyone give me some recommendations?

Yeah, he changed the site recently and is trying to fix that. You can change the link if you want to until I believe page 9. Although I believe they are mostly graphical moods so you still need some gameplay mods I think, although the unofficial patch does a good job. Also, don't use every mod, you probably won't run it smooth.
 
The biggest problem with playing vanlilla Oblivion for the first time is you can allot your points many different skills at the start of the game and then once your levels raise and the enemies along with them you end up with a character that is a Jack of all Trades but gets owned when it comes to combat. From memory you can also only raise 3 stats each level so you can waste a lot of earned points.

Depending on how old your machine is (graphics card within the past 5 years is fine), this mod is a necessity:

(That is the most popular texture replacer overhaul, and I highly recommend it. Hell, its the one I use.)

 
Okay, all you need is Oscura's Oblivion Overhaul. It's simple to install, and it contains the best mods made over the years in one package. It also removes universal leveling and quite a few other annoyances. It also keeps things fresh by eliminating the cookie cutter dungeons and bland loot.

It goes to 9... Octagon said it should be working today or tomorrow. It's a great guide, and the mod rec's start around page 4, 1-3 is just info for people who've never modded.

That's an important one, but he seems like wondering whether to do vanilla first. I don't recommend it, but still. If you go O3, then you got to get some other stuff too, like Unique Landscapes, some body replacers, etc. Ya know, the whole nine yards. :D

If modding, I highly recommend using Octagon's guide. He hits all the goodies and lays out nicely what they are and why.

It's basically a big ass-pack of mods, with an equally big ass-guide on how to install it all. Also contains standard texture packs and levelling stuff.
 
Don't go vanilla. It's very, very bad in this day and age. It wasn't all that great when it came out either, though I had a lot of fun with it. OOO removes the shitty parts of the game and leaves all the exploration, excitement and general creamy goodness.
 
I just D/L:d Oblivion from Steam yesterday and modded it today with the barebones... I've been into Elder Scrolls modding since 2005 so I have some experience with it. Aside from OOO (which is a given IMO but it is a huge, dramatic change), these are the mods I started out with as a base and I recommend you get all of them:

-Unofficial Oblivion Patch 3.2.0
-Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch 1.4.0
-Skip Introduction Dungeon 1.0 (obviously you don't need this)
-Qarl's Texture Pack Redimized+patch (this is a version of QTP3 that is reduced+optimized for equally good visuals but much lower memory hit, get this instead of the basic QTP3)
-Bomret's Texture Pack Shivering Isles (basically SI version of QTP3)
-Darnified UI 1.3.2 (an absolute must, makes the interface worthy of the PC)
-Low-Poly grass (for better FPS, you may not need this depending on your rig)
-Blade9722 2048 LOD textures+Blade9722 Border Region LOD textures (fixes the ugly long distance textures because QTP3 doesn't touch those)

All of these can be D/L:d at Planet Elder Scrolls.

You also NEED to get Oblivion Mod Manager, partly for OMODs (basically a way to organize your mods in a simple .omod format so you can add and remove mods easily) and for archive invalidation. I won't get into it, but without doing this you probably won't be seeing the changes from the texture packs in your game. Just open OBMM, click utilities->archive invalidation->update now after you've installed everything and you don't need to know more than that.

After playing around Daggerfall for a while, i moved onto Morrowind. 1/3 of the map explored in 2weeks, this game is huge (and beautiful with Vurts/Vality/Connary's texture mods). Oblivion up next.
 
I just downloaded Oblivion, Morrowind, and Fallout 3 from the steam sale. Would this be a good thread to ask for mods for the other 2 as well?
 
It depends on what you expect from the game, really. For istance, I'm into realism, so I've tried to make my game more realistic. This meaning there's hunger and sleep and stuff like that. It adds to the experience.

Anyway, All Natural is a must. Much more important than QTP3 for me. Besides, I wouldn't dare playing without DarnifiedUI, and Map Marker Overhaul is needed if you want to keep track on what you've done and what not.

I could list a lot of other mods, but I'm guessing you'll find your own way.
 
Here's some selected screens from Octagon's modded version to inspire people on the fence (and here's the rest). Keep in mind many of the bigger mods like OOO or Frans already have a huge number of game mechanic altering mods (such as the essential Living Economy), these screens only highligh graphical ones for the most part.

I'm actually not too fond of Octagon's water mod (I prefer "Improved Water"), but everything is great. I'm also quite attached to my weather mod too, I think it's also better. That one is Atmospheric Weather System (last grabbed it at v2.1), and the Tweaked enhancement mod for it (Atmospheric Weather System Tweaked, last grabbed at v2.5). It adds some awesome weather patterns (rain, snow, etc). Storms and Sound (v2.9 when I found it last) is great for lightning storms too. Here's my outdated list of mods I last used, but it really will do no one any good except for just basic looking of names/ideas.

I would also appreciate some suggestions for Fallout 3 and Morrowind. So far all I've done is the steps in the Morrowind2009 guide.

Holy shit, Qarls textures don't look [I]that[/I] good in my game... I guess it's the small resolution?

If you want to get deeply into game mechanic altering mods (and not just graphical ones), then I suggest getting Wrye Bash. It allows you to install/uninstall directly from archives without creating an omod, it helps you figure out and fix problems with your load order/mod selection, and it's the only way to run more than 255 mods. And it does around 100 other things.
