Help me pick out a new TV!

Mate can I ask, why the 4+ hdmi ports? I've got 6 units hooked to mine through 1 hdmi port on my TV. I connect the rest through my avr. Why not run a receiver?

I was thinking the same thing. I only have two ports on my TV and run the cable through one and all my video games through an HDMI switch in the other port. I would look at 3+ HDMI ports as a convenience and not a necessity.

If you are thinking of 4K keep a couple things in mind.

  • Console games will look absolutely terrible. Have you gone to Best Buy and seen 1080p images upscaled to 4K? This is obviously subjective, but it is very noticeable to me.
  • When you use image processing to upscale 1080p content into 4K, it introduces massive amounts of input lag, on the order of 50+ms. Yes, it's that absurd. Not suitable for gaming, you can always turn that off, but this will make the IQ look even worse.
  • Your PC is going to have to be ridiculous to just push 4K at even 30 FPS. Considering the huge performance cost of 4K, I'm predicting the next-gen consoles won't have 4K-native AAA games considering the cost-cutting that went into the PS4/XBO.

I always see people on GAF trying to justify their purchase while glossing over some of the massive downsides. Just want to keep people informed.

I know. 5820K @4.4, 16GB, Titan X SLI. I don't buy TV's much. Last one was...nearly a decade ago I think. I want the TV to last frankly and I'll deal with input lag and such.

You're good, run games in native 4K from your PC, turn the TV on 'game mode' to remove image processing and reduce lag.

The consoles are going to have really poor IQ and lag, but that native 4K is worth it.

Play PC mostly anyway.

So I think I'm going to go with the 60 inch Vizio since that one supports native 120hz or "effective 240hz". Which would leave me enough money to work on getting a relatively nice speaker setup. Which will probably require another thread once I do get everything.

Thanks for the help everyone.

You won't regret that model. I have it in my living room right now. So glad they gave an update that fixed the soap opera effect. It's an awesome set. Had one small issue where it wasn't allowing 4k netflix but reset to factory and it fixed it. You will definitely want to get some sort of sound setup though. I just simply got a vizio 3:1 sound bar and it's been amazing. I was actually between this set and a Sony (I think it was a 55 inch 4k ) and side by side in my home the Vizio looked better.

The Vizio M Series are absolutely fantastic TVs. Really great price point, loads of features, and 4k!

Works brilliantly for gaming as well as long as you take off the motion/smoothing bullshit, but I've seen these personally used for gaming, and they're great! The ports are labeled to which can accept the 4K signal, so make sure you watch that.

Came here to say this.

You should really consider the new Sony810c

The Sony X810C is a good gaming TV. As mentioned previously, it doesn't have a lot of motion blur. The input lag is quite good. Also, if you plan on connecting it to a PC, it accepts pretty much any signal you can throw at it.

From their Questions & Answers
GREAT WEBSITE! Fantastic reviews. We are getting ready to purchase our first 4k TV. Currently, we are looking at the Sony X810C. However, seeing multiple reviews, and your in-depth review, we are also considering the M-series Vizio. ( 60", 120hz model). The TV will be for movies, smart apps like UHD Netflix, and sports. We also have a PS4 that we use for Blu-ray and for playing some games. In your opinion, which TV would you lean towards (or possibly another?). We were looking to stick in the $1200-1400 range.

Get the Sony X810C. It has less blur on fast movement, so it's a better choice for playing video games, and it's also better at upscaling lower resolutions, which is handy for sports.

Samsung JU7000 series or above for that. Best thing about that set is that the guts are in a separate box, so if a new HDMI spec comes out or you need more processing power for the smart bollocks for some odd reason, you can just replace the box and not the whole TV.

Yeah, they've taken their sweet arse time, but TVs with real 120Hz rather than the fake motion-helping stuff are happening.

Do not, I repeat, do not get a Smart Evolution Kit. Those things are very often more trouble than they are worth.

Is it true only hdmi 5 input has the really low input lag for gaming? I have a xboxone, ps4 and wii u but i want the low lag for all of them.
