I've almost never listened to a podcast, with the exception of a couple of episodes of Mysterious Universe. That's it. I want to start listening to more of these. Can someone help me out with recommendations and the best places to download them from?

So far, I'm interested in one called 'Welcome to Night Vale' and another by Dan Carlin called 'Hardcore History'. What else should I check out? The Night Vale sounds especially cool, anything similar to that out there as well?

I'm interested in learning more science stuff, weird stuff (hence the Mysterious Universe and Welcome to Night Vale type interests), some comedy, news, things like that. What are some of your best recommendations?

If you don't mind football (real football) Football weekly is a very enjoyable list that only lasts for 45 mins. The level of wittiness, Dry Humour and puns are top level drawer.

Radio Lab is a good science podcast, mixed often with personal interest stories, and a dash of humour.

Tone Control is a great new(ish) podcast where Gaynor, of Idle Thumbs [Wizard] and Fulbright Games [Gone Home] interviews game developers about their lives and development stories.

For news I would recommend On The Media. It goes over how the media actually report the news and how that affects the public's understanding of events.

My favorite comedy podcasts are the Champs and Joe Rogan. Rogan has some shitty ones but if the guest is great (ie Joey Diaz) they can be awesome.

For comedy, check out My Brother, My Brother, and Me. It's a comedy advice show hosted by Justin McElroy of Polygon and his brothers Travis and Griffin. They're hilarious and have excellent improv skills.

Comedy Bang Bang is also great for improv. They get a lot of great alt comedians as guests, like Paul F Tompkins, Tim Heidecker, and Jason Mantzoukas.

-Radio Lab
-Snap Judgement
-Hardcore History
-Risk!
-We're Alive
:Keith and the Girl
-The Champs
-/Filmcast
-The Savage Lovecast
-Common Sense with Dan Carlin
-Mysterious Universe
-Several shows on Grantland's Pop Culture podcast feed
-Nerdist Writing Panel

I listen to The Comedy Button. Bunch of gaming industry guys discussing things that make me laugh way harder than they should.

How stuff works podcasts

They have a bunch of podcasts about interesting topics/facts/science.

Stuff you should know is great.

My usual podcasts are
WTF with marc maron - comedian interviews comedians/actors/musicians/ect

Nerdist Podcast- Chris Hardwick interviews celebs/comedians, etc. He gets some big names. Recent podcast had Arnold.

Freakanomics - Podcast covering interesting subjects

Spill - movie podcasts. they are no longer around but I just wanted to mention them because they were a great crew. they are working on a new website, already got funding through kickstarter.

Risk - people tell true stories from their life. funny/sad/erotic. quite a few stories of people going to sex camps/conventions/classes for whatever kink they discovered.

If you like weird stuff then you should listen to This American Life. It's basically an hour per episode of some human interest stories that revolve around a theme. Usually the theme is really out there, like this one recent episode that was dedicated to homesickness. The first segment was about this Mexican tribe that was offering these border crossing re-enancments. The second was about the the lives of some American expats living in Mexico and how they resort to working in the booming call centre industry to make a living. The last one was about how this woman from San Francisco who made a business selling artistic toast. That particular segment was especially weird and hard to explain.

If you like Hardcore History (and who doesn't) other history podcasts I would suggest without hesitation

Podcast History of our World
BBC In our time

Other Podcasts that I can't wait for new content

NPR Planet Money (i love this, maybe more then Hardcore history)
CordKillers (formally of Twit fame)
Radiolab (great show too infrequent!)

My favorite comedy podcasts are the Champs and Joe Rogan. Rogan has some shitty ones but if the guest is great (ie Joey Diaz) they can be awesome.
These are both very good. Joe Rogan Experience has it's ups and downs, I think it was pretty shitty a few weeks ago, but it's getting better now. The Champs is also really good.

My favorite is the Bone Zone, they mostly talk about 69ing

He talks science and pop culture. He's done interviews with all kinds of people from Anthony Bordain to Laurence Fishburne.

He also does episodes where he fields questions from Twitter/Facebook/Google Plus and the cohost grabs questions to ask NDT.

The two you've got are good. For comedy I would go for My Brother My Brother And Me. It's fantastic, haven't been able to find anything nearly as good.

My Brother, My Brother and Me is my fave for comedy.

I enjoy Insert Credit as a gaming podcast as it's actually kinda similar to My Brother in format and humor

I'm a big fan of Nosleep and Knifepoint Horror for horror fiction

And Nightvale is great if you're into Twin Peaks radio show style weirdness

Oh No Ross and Carrie is also great. The eponymous hosts undergo weird things like join cults and try out strange diets and then report on them. Really funny and informative stuff

Doug Loves Movies is a great comedy/game show podcast based around movies. Usually with stand up comedians, actors, directors as guests (And occasionally Leonard Maltin.)

The Nerdist gets amazing guests but I don't like Hardwick or the other hosts. I don't find them that funny. Just annoying in general.

Forgot about this one. It's great. Recently he had the guys from Mythbusters and they talked about their setups from some of their episodes and also making stuff from their movie days.

Chris is a good guy. I can see how you don't like the other guys.
They got Tom Hanks on their show....twice! It's worth it.

The Hanks show and the one with Brennan were great but I think that is because of the guests and not the hosts.

But Hardwick and co. have zero personality. I just don't find them funny either. Might be a different story for you and others (and seeing their numbers that seems to be the case).

For comedy I go to Earwolf. Comedy Bang Bang, improv4humans, and How Did This Get Made are great.

Comedy Bang Bang has a lot of celebrities/comedians either playing or interacting with characters. It's really funny and there are some amazing characters on it.

improv4humans is a fantastic improv podcast where the improvisors get suggestions from Twitter, phone calls, and YouTube videos.

How Did This Get Made has Paul Scheer and Jason Mantzoukas from the League, along with June Diane Raphael. They make fun of terrible movies.

I cannot recommend Dave and Chuck the Freak enough, they're a radio duo who host a show out of Detroit. They upload their shows every day as a podcast and they're hilarious.

These are a few I consistently listen to each week

Hollywood Babble-on
Smodcast
Bill Burr's Monday Morning Podcast
Star Talk
Giant Bombcast
Opie and Anthony Podcast
Common Sense with Dan Carlin
Nerdist

Lots of good recommendations in here. Hardcore History is just great.

If you want a videogame podcast to listen to, you should listen to the 8-4 Play podcast. It's the first, last, only and greatest podcast about games.

Rooster Teeth,
Ben Leonard Talks To People,
Mega64,
Internet Box,
Going quantum (EDM music podcast),
Good Mythical Morning,

Those are just the ones I listen to the most though.

Any suggestions for the best Nerdist podcasts? Listened to the Donald Faison & Brie Larson ones and they were fantastic, also have Tom Hanks queued up.
