Help with graphics in Metal Gear Solid 1 on the PC.

I've been trying to see if anyone is having the same issue and if they've resolved it. Can't find anything really.

One thing some guy said was to actually run the INSTALLER in "98 Compatability Mode" (may want to Uninstall then use that method when you Reinstall). Not sure if that will work, but if you really want to play it on the PC, its worth a try. I'll keep looking out.
will try it. is this really possible though? i've never heard of anything like this and i don't understand how it would change anything, since it doesn't detect the video card until the first time you start up the game.

i've also looked high and low, and found very little. i found an entry on intel's website about it....

Graphics
Metal Gear Solid Game Runs in Software Mode and Will Not Run in Hardware Mode

Symptom(s):
Metal Gear Solid* game runs in software mode and will not run in hardware mode.

Cause:
The game checks for the Intel vendor ID and automatically disables hardware acceleration.

Solution:

A patch or update is available that corrects issues reported with the game. Contact the game manufacturer † for further instructions or support.

† This link will take you off of the Intel Web site. Intel does not control the content of the destination Web Site.

Operating System:
Windows* 2000, Windows* 98, Windows* 98 SE, Windows* Me

This applies to:
Intel® 82810 Graphics Controller
Intel® 82815 Graphics Controller
...but I can't find this "patch" that they mention, anywhere. Here's a pic of my chipset info btw, if it helps...

i also found some info when i came up upon this post on another forum...

http://www.computing.net/gaming/wwwboard/forum/256.html

..but they don't have an answer either. I also found some info from some french website, but i can't find the forum post again. i wish i was better at google though, i know the answer has to be out there somewhere, it's just getting google to give it to me by choosing the right keywords. if anyone's a google master, i'd appreciate any relevant links anyone can find. :D

meh I played the PSX version for the first time a while ago with no problem. It's the original and that's what matters - anything else (Twin Snakes) isn't from kojima's team so it's not the real thing. Same reason why I prefer subs over even good dubs in anime.

Ok, now that I contributed to this thread I'm going on a semi-related rant/derailment sorry but I need to get his off my chest and no way I'm starting a thread for it.

WTH IS WRONG WITH SNAKE EATER!? I couldn't get into this game a while ago so I left it and started from the first MGS. Liked that one, though it had many problems. MGS2 fixed those and then some. I LOVE that game. After Sons of Liberty I'm thinking I finally 'got' Metal Gear and it was time to move on to the best of the series. I waited until I had time to play w/o worrying about anything, which is now. God this is horrible, the camera is much worse in the jungle. Controls, I have no idea what's wrong. I'm sneaking around the factory and the AP sensor is going off and I have no idea where are the soldiers but suddenly SNAKE STANDS UP - NO CRAWL YOU BASTARD "WHO'S THERE" and I'm #%$@!1.

I had no problem with it in 2 but god it's like I'm blind here. I was looking around the MGS3 threads here at GAF and crazymoogle mentioned there are gameplay reasons for the camera - does anybody know those? I'm dying to know. Seriously why not make the next Resident Evil let you control a blind man but with 542 sonar gadgets you have to use every 10 seconds to figure out your surroundings.

This was supposed to be even better than 2. I didn't wait for subsistence cuz I had no problem with 2's camera but this is ridiculous. Too many times I'm running around and getting shot by soldiers I can't see - soldiers 5 FEET AWAY FROM ME. God dammit. Everybody said this destroys all the other games in the series - WTF? Tell me you just played for the cool cutscenes and cinematic angles or something. I'm not giving this game another try until at least a few days. Or maybe in an hour cuz I can't sleep. ARGH. [/rant]

i don't know, but after reading that, i am definately going to wait for MGS3: Subsistance now! holy crap, that sounds like a nightmare. i'm going to wait for Subsistance so I can have that new Splinter Cell camera (thank God they finally seen the light and are adding this from now on!). i always hated this rediculous camera... but am putting up with it just so i can catch up for part 3 Sub and part 4, which they will improve even further on their over the shoulder camera (according to the 1up interview).

Twin Snakes sucks. With that said, I wouldn't play MGS1 on PC unless you have a USB adapter to play the game with your Dual Shock controller.

And I think for some very odd reason, you can't walk slowly in MGS1 on PC, you can only run, which can be annoying when you're trying to sneak past guards without making any noise on water or whatnot. Same thing happens with emulating on ePSXe... wait a minute, was it like that on the PSOne too? It can't be.

Yeah the "Download the latest drivers" is usually Microsofts way of saying, " Leave us alone, we don't want to deal with you". :p

ya, i think so too. welp, thanks for all this help. don't worry about it anymore, you guys have done enough. i don't want to take up anymore of your time. i don't really know what to say other than thank you. you've both been *extremely* kind and helpful in helping me try to find a solution. i am very humbled and appreciative. kudo's to a couple of awesome GAF posters! :D

Ok, the secret to enjoying MGS3 is not NOT play it as if it were MGS1 or 2. Maybe like MGS2 with Radar Off, but there are a lot of new control nuances you need to know. This is why I expressed disdain for "transitioning" into MGS3 earlier. You're far better off learning 3 fresh. It may be painful... but at least Konami provided an in-game tutorial
and the Virtuous Mission, which is basically a training run.

- Unlike MGS2, the top-down camera in MGS3 is adjustable with the right analog stick. Furthermore, pushing down on the stick while the camera is shifted will lock it in place until the next time you touch the stick. USE THIS.

- Use your camo, find vantage points to spy on enemy movements, take your time, and DO PROPER RECON. Remember that holding both L2 and R2 in first person look(R1) lifts your vantage upward. Use this to look over grass, and it doesn't even affect your camo rating.

- There's a reason there's no background music normally. Use your ears.

- CQC. Learn it. Love it. It'll get you much farther than Punch, Punch, Kick will most of the time. Speaking of which...

- ANALOG FACE BUTTONS AHOY. The X button goes directly from stand to crawl and vice versa when pushed hard. Pushing it normally is more MGS1/2 like. Hold O to grab somebody in CQC, but remember not to push O hard unless you want to slit their throat. Weapons like the AK47 require holding down Square to aim, but then fire when pushed strongly(tip: use L1 to use the weapon's sights). At the same time, holding down Square for weapons like the pistol or shotgun aims and then suddenly letting go fires... gradually backing off unreadies the weapon.

- Again, camoflauge. You aren't sneaking behind walls or boxes, you're sneaking through terrain. You'll do a lot of crawling.

- Unlike MGS1 or 2... enemy reinforcements aren't infinite most of the time. If absolutely need be, it IS possible to stand your ground and kill everybody off... although this is harder than not getting caught in the first place. Then again, I like to have my cake and eat it too on this point. :D

- Be creative. MGS3 is really flexible to playstyle, and there are frequently multiple ways to carry out a task.

there are so many reasons why to hate this game:

- cut-scenes
- change in music
- Meryl, Naomi Hunter & Natascha who lost their accent
- just a straight remake + MGS2 mechanics, no new things at all..atleast if you don't count that stupid hidden Gamecube easter-egg.
- since the game wasn't designed to play from a first person view it get's terrible unbalanced, especially the bosses.
- Gamecube controls

They added dogtags too...which do or unlock nothing at all. At least I get to kill and abuse Kobun Heat's corpse at my peril.

yeh, I don't even count that one, since you don't receive any extra's by collecting them.
