Dino Thunder was awesome. It really did do everything MMPR tried to do, but better.

Sure, the Sentai footage part of it was nonsensical (since they made next to no attempt to explain anything), but the characters and original story were top tier for the series.

Darn, I was sorta excited that everyone know Saint Seiya's Latin adaptation so I expected the same :P

the first time i saw saint seiya was the spanish language copy that a friend of mine was reading.

Am I the only one that thinks a good adaption of Garo could work very well on USA prime time. Be less titties of course.

It could work and very well actually. One more thing about Dino Thunder, yellow ranger, wow was she cute.

Seeing as today is my day off I decided to marathon Kamen Rider Blade. As of now I'm on episode 30. Episode 29 was pretty funny given the whole switch a roo. Also episode 28? When the Elephant undead shattered Blade's helmet with his hammer, I thought that was cool. I don't know about you guys but when I see the hero's armor shatter it make me feel like he's really going through the ropes.

Ok so I'm at episode 34 now. I really hope they explain why a certain spade clad motif rider should be avoided like the plague. I've found the category king undead to have some really well design monster suits. The beetle/internetjunkie one in particular, I mean wow. Jack form looks ok I guess.

Other musings, the motorcycle episode...didn't leave me with much of an impression. Also Kenzaki's friend the female board member has had no screen time or relevancy since the first few episodes. Oh and before I forget Leangle still sucks. I find scenes with his girlfriend hard to shallow but I'm not going to rant on that...for today.

edit: willy105 got banned? For what this time?

Hell yeah she was. The fact that she was a reasonably strong, independent female character in a boy's franchise was a bonus. She was also in Hellcats last year, though I never wound up watching it.

I wish there was a clean version of the Super Squadron Hero Getter video (I want a clean shot of Marvelous in the teacher/labcoat gear from the Fiveman line; lab coats are kind of a thing of mine).

Anyone here into the Ultraman franchise? I have the DVD set of the original series sitting on my shelf, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. The fact that we had a local co-production (Towards the Future/Great) is half the reason I'm drawn to the franchise. Not a lot of Australia-involved toku. I guess a few of the recent Rangers being from here kinda counts, but not as much.

EDIT: Gokai 20 was pretty fun. Reminds me that I ought to order a Mobirate one of these days. I just love the way the voice yells the names (GIIIIIIIIIIINGUHMYAN). Movie looks cool based on the footage in the ED.

Boukenger episode next week.

Yeah, I'm looking for a good spliced one from the hi-res videos.

So yesterday, I finished the Kamen Rider Blade. I'd like to share a review of how I found the series. Warning get a glass of or something rant incoming.

Kamen Rider Blade: spoiler tagged for those planning to watch

It's a series about Riders fighting undead, immortals who can't die. They can't die but they sure can get their butts whooped. I actually thought the whole notion of undead representing all life forms on Earth pretty cool. The big battle royale for control of the Earth sounded pretty interesting. Any who I found the setup of an organization maintaining peace ok. We got good intros of Garren/Tachibana the older Rider and Blade/Kenzaki the titular hero. Saw a bit of rivalry tendencies from Tachibana but it was minor.

When Kenzaki and Hirose met Kotaru, I found that whole living arrangement too perfect. I know I it's a show and a Rider isn't swimming in money. I mean what are the chances a guy befriend someone with farmland left in his name? Speaking of which kotaru's house was the base of operations in the show. With this said it was hard from to believe blade got to the city and etc in a timely manner. Many episodes in I found Blade as a character a bit boring. He seemed, well perfect no flaws, no nothing.
The introduction of Hajime served as quite the counter to the board riders. He was surrounded in shadows as to who and what he was. It added even more darkness to the overall plot in Blade.

As I watched Blade I often thought there would be instances where the plot wouldn't be moving forward. Thankfully there are very few examples of this actually. Everyone's actions kept the plot onwards. The series did a good job of presenting the issues a rider would have given his relationships. It also showed the downfalls of a life in the name of battle, Hajime as an example. The relationships among the cast was enjoyable to watch and again there were few annoying moments. To it's credit there weren't moments were it seemed humor was forced and just inserted for humor''s sakes.

Then we got to the point as to when Leangle was introduced half through the series. I find him to be a low point of the show in all honesty. Undead have been progressively getting stronger and more manipulative as evidenced by his appearance. My problem with Mutsuki wasn't so much that he was a kid but how they chose to portray him.
If a kid whose seemingly timid has the courage to fight undead that doesn't exactly fit to me. Also his armor design was bad compared to everyone else. When he went rogue to do his own thing I felt that could have been done better. It felt like his battle with the Ace went on too much. I'm not even going to mention his battle with the Category Ace...again?

Evolutions in the show were cool because they were handled rather well. How else were they going to be highlevel undead right?

I found Kenzaki a more interesting character when he was bonding with Hajime. He despite the warnings of others choose to believe which was by far harder than the alternative. Now the ending...wow...I didn't see that coming whatsoever. I respect Kenzaki as a hero protecting others even more now. Very bitter, sweet and depressing, I love it. I think one of my favorite Kenzaki episodes is when he kept getting shot to protect that girl.

The movie offered a nice contrast to the series ending it was well suited (ahaha)

Favorite Rider...Garren
because he had flaws and I found his suffering and growth more relatedable.
I like how he played his cards(I'm having fun)

Favorite Undead...Category King.
He was literally an internet troll

Favorite episodes, 15 and 47 because they were...dare I say it? Ace(hah).

Of note:
I think series with card power ups kinda suck. Everyone and their mom stole the belts and the cards to henshin

We need more darker modern series.

Nice to see your thoughts on Blade, Urban Scholar. Out twitter conversations have persuaded me to delve into OT-GAF and come into the Toku thread :P

Have to agree with you on a few points - Garren was a great character overall, both his human and his Rider form. Probably my favourite non-lead KR character ever.

Also on what you said about the story moving along most of the time with little downtime. KR Agito was the first of the 'modern' series I watched and while I enjoyed it, what brought it down for me was the fact that the battle against the monster of the week seemed to happen in the last few minutes of the episode every time. Blade has some fantastic battles that take part at different times during the episodes.

I should rewatch it one of these days, it's been a few years since my first watch.

Okay, I just want the consensus on these (I like/love them)

Uchuu Keiji Gaban
Kamen Rider Black/RX
Gosei Sentai Dairanger

Gaban: Never seen it. Aside from clips here and there I mean. Love the theme song (anything by Takayuki Miyauchi is ace in my book).

Kamen Rider Black/RX: Black is of course better than RX by several miles, but both are quite good. And I do actually like RX's suit better. Kotaro is probably the best Showa-era protagonist ever.

Gosei Sentai Dairanger: Terribly overrated, mostly because BU-BUT WE NEVER GOT THE SUITS IN POWER RANGERS. Nice mecha and one of the best fighting styles in Sentai (I'm a sucker for the more Chinese fighting styles that Dairanger and Gekiranger used), but the story was absolutely awful. Rarely did it ever go anywhere, and the ending was just awful. Really it's sorta like the Faiz of Sentai. Great aesthetics, terrible execution.

Welcome friend

Thanks :) I'll make an effort to be regular in this thread since I'm a big Toku fan.

As way of discussion, I'm enjoying the two current series, Gokaiger and KR OOO. I'm about 10 episodes behind the current one in both, but am really starting to enjoy OOO. There's a nice story starting to develop.

In terms of Gokaiger, I'm of the oinion that it could turn out to be one of the great Sentai series. Strong cast of characters and the whole 'being able to transform into older Sentai' thing really works for me. My only concern is trying to actually watch the episodes and not focus 100% of my attention on Luka's legs :P

I only managed to watch few eps of Gavan but I think it's pretty decent. It's standard fare, to say the least. Shaider is a bit more standout.

I only watched Black, but from what I gather Black and RX are different as night as day as the former is dark while the other isn't.

Having watched Dairanger, I must agree with Cain that in some form it is sort of overrated. It's good, but not zomg so good, and the ending surprise was wtf! It has Jin though, and that's awesome.

So I just watched episode 1 of Abaranger. So far it seems ok, I was taken aback at how everyone used their super mode in the first episode though. Is red taking care of his sister or something?

Akira Kushida sings the op for Gavan/Sharivan/Shaider actually :)

Oh. Well damn.

To be fair, I generally end up thinking Miyauchi sings almost every 80's toku opening. Mainly because he's just that awesome.

Indeed he is.. now his work on Winspector/Solbrain/Exceedraft is well done but that's more 90's..

I love Abaranger. You gonna watch more or just checking it out?

Abaranger is totally worth it. It's probably the most underrated show of the 2000's. It's like Gokaiger in that its the prefect balance of goofy and serious/awesome.

Coincidentally, it shares a main writer with Gokaiger.

Argh, why is it that every time I want to find Juspion, it's dubbed in Portugese :(

Ah well, I have some tapes somewhere from '85... maybe I should just dig those up.

Also, watching Changeman again for the nth time.. love that show.

So, 12 pages deep and I never noticed this thread before. But I saw the thread title and thought "Oh tonkatsu! I love that stuff!" Boy was I wrong.

Welp, we finished Faiz. I didn't find it all that confusing or whatever, though it definitely got pretty depressing. Ending was a bit of a letdown but seemed kinda typical of Japanese tv/video game faire. Overall I really liked it, and I'm looking forward to watching the movie before we move on.

CHOUDENSHIIIIII.... BIOMAN!

Also, late 80's was Kageyama's time.

Maskman, Changeman and Jetman openings FTW!

His character song "Dead End Game" is one of the best ever.

I just checked and I have to get to episode 18. I just watched the episode where Ranru was helping that kid episode 5? Oh hey guys, I like random things and I had a bullet proof vest!

I have to admit watching Kamen Rider so much is making Abaranger seem sillier by nature. Of course that should be par the course considering sentai is more accessible right? Also Ryoga seems really goofy for someone rocking the red suit.

It evens out, he has some of the most bad ass scenes of an red in the 00s. Which says alot since Banban follows him.

Right now I find Asuka's henshin problems really interesting. Heck I don't even know why he's not fighting 100%. Episode 8 at the moment.
One ep away from the ep shown in Dino Thunder

Figuarts are the worst hobby in the world.

They're cheap enough that you can justify buying one, but they're expensive and come in enough flavors that you chew through your money with them

Are they better than typical gunplas though?

On a related note, I take it that they got the Boukenger's "real power" in the movie?

Started watching OOO after finishing Den-O. First 2 episodes are awesome so far. Then again, most Kamen Rider begin awesome. Really got me hooked though. First episode of Blade didn't compel me really, so I started watching OOO. Is W any good?

W is pretty good, it doesn't have that big of a lull midseason as most recent rider shows have had.

What's the deal with the guy sporting the crazy hair? I often see art of him with a Popsicle? Spoiler tag if you must he seems weird which maybe good.

He's Ankh, the human analogue of a Greeed (the other Greeed being the main bad guys in the show) in OOO; he works with OOO and loves popsicles, hence you seeing him with them in a lot of pictures. His character is basically an asshole anti-hero type. Oh, and he is possessing the body of the brother of one of the other characters.
