Heroes of Newerth Beta PC (dota clone)

Damn, played one game and spent like the first 5 minutes of the map trying to see where vlads was lol. Changing all the names and icons sort of threw me in for a loop initially but that won't take long to get used to. Is there some sort of GAF group or clan out there to join?

Same thing happened to me. "Where's the damn tangos!??!"

I need someone to hide behind while I familiarize myself with the icons.

and LoL seems the better game anyway

Im also preferencing LoL over this game. Im new to the genre and LoL is so much better at introducing new players to the genre. Everything about the game is more open to new players, whereas HoN is a confusing clusterfuck.

Also, don't bother going into the noob only matches. It's complete bullshit, just a trap for new players to get into as the more experience players stay on the same team and rape the new guys.

I'm also now of the opinion that EM games are stupid. Way more fun to fuckover tower divers when the towers actually do damage.

I had the exact opposite experience. As long as you understand the general premise of DOTA (which I did, though I'd never played) HoN is fine. The LoL interface is a complete mess. From the opening UI which is esoteric and offers no useful information to the actual in game UI which, in comparison to HoN's is cumbersome and unfriendly.

Noob only matches do actually exist, it's just a matter of finding one with a host that knows what he's doing and being aware. If you join a noob only game and there's a bunch of 1600+ PSR guys on the same team and the host doesn't autobalance, then chances are it's probably a pubsmash, in which case you just leave. Alternatively you can always create your own noob only match and kick people that are above the desired PSR level and autobalance it yourself.

On that note HoN's matchmaking system from - server options to server selection to the lobby system - is also 10 years ahead of LoL's (quite literally). Blind matchmaking that sticks me in with level 30's? With no option to view other players stats that are about to own me before the game actually starts? Really?

The one thing that I do really like about LoL is that in the hero selection screen you can apply (multiple) filters to look at only the hero types your interested in playing (disablers -> melee disablers, etc).

Can everyone join clan neogaf so we can run some inhouses?

Oh hi there mint, I tried my best to counter your Swift with my Succubus :(

I like LoL, yeah. It's slower and far more about tactics than twitch.

Find your hero and you shall fall for it like Tre did with Tempest, blink > ulti, hahaha wipes team out.

Community seems very hostile. I played my first game (never played dota, just demigod and LoL) and told my teammates I had never played before. They nearly had a nervous breakdown. One guy tried to be helpful by suggesting my item progression, but everyone else was perpetually pissed off at me and when we lost one battle even told the other team it was because we have an extreme noob on our side. No doubt I played poorly, but I got some kills and we won the match, so whatever. People just like excuses.

May not play again.

No no, it was all your fault, stop making excuses! but really play again but with the people in the Gaf chat, they all be a mix of range level wise from Casval ninja Thunderbringer and Mints spinning ulti Swiftblade which no matter what you do it gets you.

Good times in Clan NeoGAF tonight!

for everyone other than me
:lol

I told my whole team to get a Shaman's Headdress!

We had a lot of new players today that pld and it was good, what we did was balance the teams and make the good players pick players that they never pld. My team got done over though, Tre picked Behemoth and he like blink > ulti. Taking a while guess but if we do it again I think hes going to pick magmus.

Oh and if people want to view details but not in the game this site has pretty much everything.

But srsly I played a 4v5 (guy on our team discod dead at the start) right after that with magmus + blink and it was rapeface. We pillaged the other team 34 to 11 kills. We did have a hell of a Chronos on our team though.

Geez, got a key of the Facebook think (first thing useful I get with a facebook account) but the first experience has not been great, was kicked in middle of a game even if I explained it was my very first game (I played really poorly but it was a supposed Noob match).

This is exactly why I never tried DOTA even if I love the concept. Without any type of singleplayer to learn, the learning process gets too annoying.

Name is Azkabeth, I would like to join GAF is possible.

This game's community is pure ass, but if you do decide to stick around we can teach you the ropes join the gaf channel sometime.

The first thing you should focus on learning is not dying. Don't worry about getting kills, just stay alive and level. You get exp just by standing near dying creeps so it's fairly easy to level up without taking any damage.

And make sure you're on mint's team.

Just got the beta today. Is there any good beginners guides anywhere? I never played DotA, and while I get the point of the game, I still suck at it...don't want to drag my team down too much.

Tried some non -EM games last night, but I can't say I like it. It encourages 1v3 ganking and massing towers even more then non-EM games.

Can anyone recommend some fairly straight forward heroes to play for a total newbie who's only other DOTA like experiance is Demigod?

I had a quick play with (i think) Voodoo Jester and was more amused by his Italian voice over than his skills.

wat.

I'd need you to go into some detail about 'massing towers', but the '1v3' ganking bit is basically you not being map aware. If you can't see 2+ enemies on the map and you're outside the range of a tower, expect to get ganked, it's a golden rule of DOTA.

People want money to get stronger, ganking provides both money as well as the ability to get stronger off your team (slowing your experience, gaining theirs), it's almost 300% worth it to gank someone, just don't let that someone be you and you'll be OK (can't say about the outcome of the game, though)

Looks like Blitz rooted me out!

I'm Justin Pereira (S2Mercenary), one of the staff at S2Games (Project Lead for Savage 2: A Tortured Soul, although I'm sure I'll be working on some HoN stuff in the future).

I have 8 invites available to send out - PM me with your e-mail address (include "Heroes of Newerth" in the PM subject) and I'll toss you a key.

[edit] 1 invite left

It basically stemmed from playing publics, though I once you get killed three times in a row (or more), you're looking at a gold and xp loss that is very, very hard to make right.

So I just started my first game...

About 2 minutes in the game froze (as in connection was lost) and then I got disconnected from the server. Is this a common thing or is there something I need to do to resolve this?

Played a couple of games last night. First one was 5v5 and my teammates didn't speak English. Randomed the Zephyr and died lots, but my teammates dominated.

Second game I randomed the War Beast and still died lots, my teammates tried to vote-kick me multiple times, then I got disconnected for some reason.

Is there an item guide? I always buy the Enchanted Marchers (or just the Marchers if I'm low on gold) to start, then a Sustainer, then start saving for a Staff/etc.

There's a good Zephyr guide in the guides section on the forums. I wrote a War Beast guide myself, though it's not up to my usual quality :lol

They're always working on the servers. I've seen some of the S2 guys up past 3 AM PST (S2 Games located in Cali). Crazy stuff. It could've been the servers, or it could've been you. I play on a horrendous connection, but I've never actually lagged off the servers (and I lag every few seconds!).

'Bout time you showed up! Your JTV and Youtube get linked to often on the forums :lol

I had a quick play with (i think) Voodoo Jester and was more amused by his Italian voice over than his skills.

I haven't played Demigod but there is quite a diversity of heroes, and among those, some are really straightforward and their skills don't take much complication to use.

Arachna makes a lot of damage and has a really annoying slow and ult, both of which are used offensively(you just throw them directly at who you wanna kill), and a defensive skill(which you pop up when fighting enemies, specially mages).

Another straightforward hero is Thunderbringer, who has 3 powerful skills and a passive that enhances the other spells. You just throw your more powerful skills at the enemy heroes and are pretty good at getting early kills.

Swiftablade has 2 passives which enhance your fighting capabilities(though these kind of passives are best to upgrade later on), and 2 pretty straightfoward offensive abilities, one which will let you hit AoE and you just move close to things to hit them your ult which will hit random heroes for a great ammount in a small radius, so if you manage to find an opponent on his own with the cooldown off, then he is pretty much dead unless he has an insane amount of HP.

so yeah, though, these 3 heroes are either agility or int so they tend to be quite fragile, you gotta internalize the fact that you must always avoid taking damage, but when you are careful, you can be a hard adversary to face

Finally installed this thing. So far, so...good I guess. A bit overwhelming. Looks like there are 231 heroes with 23 pages of text for their abilities.. :lol

Also seeing people complain about newbies in a newbie game is pretty interesting.

You fought well my rival... but I'll beat you yet!

PSR is way out of whack.

I was playing with a friend of a friend yesterday for a couple games - LAMERBOI2.

The guy must have some way of manipulating his PSR because his win% is a little over 50%, yet his PSR was 189.(It's 439 right now)

Guy was ridiculously good tho.. we were beating some 1700-1800's w/ ease and little help from me.

Just thought I'd share because PSR manipulation is something they definitely need to fix in beta because i'm sure it wasn't fun for the other team.

When PSR was introduced some players started with 0 PSR.
So he worked up from zero to 489.

PSR needs completely overhauled, in its current state it tells you very little about a persons actual skill or team play.

It's not supposed to tell you anything about skill or team play.
It's supposed to tell you how likely the person is to win against players of lower/higher PSR.
