Heroes of Newerth Beta PC (dota clone)

Hmmm... I've never really gotten into DotA (or that style of games, for that matter) and am wondering if which I should devote my playing time to. Should I play League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, or just plain old DotA?

Now is the best time to learn dota with all these new dota clones coming out. playing these are similar to playing an mmorpg so you won't know which one you like until you played one of them for many hours. I hate when people play just 3 games of HoN/LoL and then goes to bash them.

All of them are great and most ppl pick the one their friends are playing. HoN is the hardest to learn but worth it once you get the hang of it. pm me for a key.

Previews for this game are starting to show up on a few gaming websites:

The balance issues present in the wide array of characters are only going to get ironed out, and the fact there was only one map present in the game in this state obviously limits the options on how to play it, as everyone gets used to its paths and secrets.

Sigh.

PSA: For the love of god, stop feeding Swift. Post Haste into Runed Axe should never be a game winning strategy.

STOP FEEDING HIM.
You've got it backwards, it's not feeding that powers swift up, it's the poste haste+ rune axe. The kills are a result of him out leveling everyone as a result of the super efficient creep killing. One creep wave = more gold than a hero and about half as much exp. It's not too hard to fathom him killing two creep waves every forty seconds. That would give him 1200exp(more than a hero) and 700 gold(twice that of a hero) and enough time to post haste towards the next creep wave. It's also insanely convenient that everyone avoids him because they're so scared of him leaving him to grind as many creeps as he desires.

The proper way to stop him is to attempt to use strategy, instead of doing the usual pub "let's all run around as an angry mob" plan.

It's a shame that reviewers don't get the game. But they're mostly right, a game with a slippery slope as steep as HoN demands a decent tutorial.

However, ign just fails there's a reason it's been years visited the site--can't believe they couldn't even be bothered to get the names right.

not much of a strong build for him.

post haste + hack & slash + portal key = gg

I've been reading up some impressions from the beta seeing as the NDA has been lifted. From what I gather, it seems HoL has an impressively steep learning curve, given the hardcore community and complexity of the game.

Starting to believe that random draft is way better than single draft. At least the overpowered heroes get split up a bit.

Do you mean HoN or LoL? :lol

HoN is one of the only games I've played recently where teamwork isn't just preferable, but absolutely required. It's that mindset that I've had trouble getting used to, nevermind the depth and complexity of the heroes, items, and all the potential synergy between them. All those self-sufficient qualities that you can get away with in a FPS game will get you, and consequentially your team, murdered. I'm great for making that comment since I'm probably one of the least experienced and skilled of the active GAF players right now and I've done that more times than I can count.

It's a great game that I want to play, but am hesitant to because I'm not good at it and that fact ends up screwing your teammates. I'd at least give it a shot if I were you; the hard won battles are more satisfying, after all.

Right. I like that focus on teamwork, I'm definitely going to give this one a try. Also, how many people are usually logged on during peak times?

EDIT: Also, do you guys also recommending giving LoL a try?

Sorry for the multiple posts guys. Anyways, I've been playing around and I really think this is a game I can get in to. It is how ever, pretty darn complex. Is there a group of gaffers that consistently play that would like to show me the ropes?

last time i was on (like 430pm est) 12k people

I should give the game another whirl. It's really hard adjusting from this from dota... as odd as that sounds. The graphics are so more complex that I have a hard time wrapping my head around wtf is actually going on . Also the voices absolutely drive me insane (The Luna and Bristleback replacements had me tearing my ears off).

I'm hoping for some more str characters that I like.... come on dragon knight.

You should try the new Tidehunter(Kraken). He's considered relatively weak by the HON community, but he has some unique, albeit hard to use skills. I single handedly won a game w/ a couple friends the other day w/ some insane pulls with his ultimate. (It’s like going fishing.)

Warming up to it a little after playing that GAFer game today. Tre explained some of the stat mechanics and I have a better grasp of what's going on now. Also went 10-3-15, which surprised the hell out of me since it was my third ever match.

Still mainly gonna play LoL, but I'll try to jump in on some gaf matches here and there.

Not that surprising, you were playing against me and i suck badly :P

NDA has been totally removed now. Its fine to post pics and video.

I hated him, he's not a tidehunter at all... not even close. He lost two of the skills that made him tide hunter.

He's definitely not as easy to use as before. Without his Kraken Shell(aka creep damage immunity) and 2 sec screen-wide stun, he's a lot more vulnerable.

IMO his new ultimate is nearly as good, just takes a lot more skill to use. There's nothing like turning a 5 person opponent push into a 5v2 gank for your teamates.

I'd say give him another shot. He's probably my favorite hero.

I really liked Kraken Shell. Would plop down a vanguard and walk around like I owned the place.

His new skill seem so much more int like.

I've barely played any DOTA, but I certainly know what it's all about.

I've had a key for this for a while thanks to blitz, but I got sidetracked and forgot about it. Tried it tonight.

Wow. Everything. The interface. The incredibly lagless play. The presentation. Incredibly. Such an improvement over WC3. I couldn't imagine anything better. Add to that the fact that I know S2 supports their games very well (Savage 2), and the promise for comprehensive stat and replay tracking, and that sealed me pre-order.

I should probably have tried LoL out first though. How is it?

UI needs polish (night and day from HoN), slower paced, more newbie friendly, better community.

I was disappointed to learn his ult doesn't work with Post Haste.

Ahh okay good to know.

The interface in HoN is honest to god near perfect from what I can tell. My only complaint is I have trouble picking out enemy heroes, but that's partially because I'm colorblind and the red outline isn't that obvious to me.

As for the community...I've only played 1 game so far (though labeled a newbie game), but the people there were real friendly and helpful.

I picked a random hero and ended up on Swift. He seems pretty easy to play so I think I'll stick with him for a while.

They need an easier way to tell you what heroes the enemies have yeah.

You're pretty lucky, the community is DotA's (and HoN's) biggest obstacle to new players.

wow, the video on the main page looked totally awesome.

i should go back and give this game another go. Riot will have to do something really special with their client update for LoL to match the polish shown in HoN.

LoL is just so much more accessible for noobs (like me) though.

yep, it's done really well. LoL's is simply downright broken in some parts.

You got lucky. :lol

When I was starting people were yelling, screaming and just overall raging. Hell, people still do at me. :D I think I've gotten a lot better though, I'm only really bad if I have to be a melee character. :lol

Well I'm just going to try to stick to newbie labeled games for the moment. Games can be labeled for pros for a reason.

I'll report if I have any bad run-ins with the community.

I have to just express my enthusiasm again though. I have never in my life seen an interface and netcode so perfect in beta (after launch, even). The menu, the chat, the stats, the hero selection, the shops (omg stash!), the level-ups, the control customization. With the support S2's given Savage 2, I just know this is going to be a good game.

Most definitely. I'm very surprised at how robust the clan, ranking, and stat tracking systems are for this game. I have a feeling this game might explode in popularity. It really just takes DotA, an already amazing game I'm finding after only a couple of matches, and adds in the support, interface, and polish that WC3 just can't provide.

Still don't like non-EM games :/ , even though EM games get owned by agi carries and everyone picks them.

I like playing EM games as well. I just like a shorter game and not 1 hour long.
I don't mind playing non-EM with gaffers but when I'm by myself, I usually pick em. i also like picking AGI heroes

They are going to be giving out invites to current testers today because of the homepage launch so if anyone gets an invite over I would really like one.

I had my first try of LoL last night and the whole game is embarrising when compared to this.

The UI, the menu, the art style, level of polish, bugs. It loses at all of these. You dont get a server browser but have to wait in a matchmaking queue (and will then put you in with level 30 summoners). Dont even talk about the loading :lol

Im gonna give it a few more games as im sure theres a good game in there trying to get out, but its hard to get past the fact that it feels like an amateur flash game.

HoN really does spoil you :)

Glad to hear you found some decent folks. I had one guy telling me I should go shoot myself for playing such a bad Night Hound :lol this was despite my score being higher than his the whole time.

I really need to stop joining pubs. I have the worst luck and end up on teams where everyone wants to be an agi hero vs a pre-made group :(

What time do the GAF games usually start? And how can I get in on some of that good stuff? :D

Nice! :lol

By the way, is there an easy way to join matches as a team? If a few friends and I play, I can imagine it might be hard to get a game going with all of us on the same side.

For now, we're playing 2v2 so we can get used to the game. Lots of fun.

Besides hero specific strategies, are there any general strategies or tips for a new player here? Mandatory items for agi/int/str? Mandatory consumables? When should I kill neutral creeps? Anything really. :lol

I feel like I'm finally getting a little used to the game dynamics. Unfortunately, last night the first game my teammate ended up feeding the other team and the second game saw me with a character I didn't know how to use and following *someone's* advice I ended up underleveled. Lots of angry pub teammates. :lol

For those interested, there's usually a lot of people are around 6-10 EST; there are usually a mix of people with all levels of skill.

There were a ton of people when I played last night. Around 10-12PM EST, there were 14,000-18,000 people online.

BTW did anyone check the pre-order bonuses? The best one is that only pre-orders can taunt enemies. If you kill an enemy after he's taunted, the arcade voice yells "SMACK DOWN!". If he kills you after you taunted him, the arcade voice yells "HUMILIATION". :lol

Its true LoL isn't doesn't have the technical strengths of HoN, but I think it has the clear edge in freshness. Every hero in there is completely new and unique, and as a 4+ year dota veteran, I'm simply done with the same map, same heroes, same mechanics, same strats, same items. I feel like the technical things arent anything to worry about, as time will fix them (they actually just redid the entire chat system and wiped our lists! Havent got a chance to check it out yet though)

Definitely give it many matches, and you'll find how many absolutely badass heroes/skills/playstyles/varied there are. Try out Kassadin, or Rammus :D

As someone who has never played DOTA, its all new to me so thats not really a problem.

Kassadin is the only hero i've tried but i didnt have much fun with him :/

Yup the last patch disabled it. They want to keep it fair for everyone (even though people who play at a higher res or with a widescreen monitor still have an advantage).

The camera thing is understandable. There's an official post on their forums for why they did it. The main reasons are:

1) So people with slow PCs are not at a disadvantage
2) Because the game is currently balanced around that camera distance.

i hate being an annoying beggar, but if anyone has a key and stuff that they would be willing to share so i could try out the game i would love you forever. really.

i have been playing dota forever but have not tried any of these 'clone' games, i would love to give one a shot!

I'll have to check on my iPhone (HoN blocked at work), but I probably have a key for you since I bought the game last night.

edit: yeah looks like I have 6 more invites to send out. I have 3-5 for friends of mine, so for now, I can give you one. I'll probably have 2 more to give later since I assume one or two of my friends won't be interested.

PM me your email.
