Heroes of Newerth Beta PC (dota clone)

It demands teamwork to win, but personal success is based off stealing as much as you can from your teammates and going off on your own to leave other people to die. It brings out the shitty nerdrage 17 year old in everyone (...who isn't a shitty nerdrage 17 year old already).
For EM games, yes, but it's usually not the case for non-EM games.

Although somehow, GAF in houses always manage to turn into a "watch the agi carry farm until he can solo the entire team".

Take those down ASAP! NDA still says no screenshots or videos!

Take them off your host, too.

EDIT: In other news, what are those? Don't think I've seen them before...
Quote from Fielding "With the unveiling of our website, http://www.heroesofnewerth.com we are lifting the NDA on HoN. Feel free to chat, post pics, videos, etc, wherever you want! "

I'll be posting a ton of screens later tonight, then. :D

Man, I haven't felt like this about a multiplayer game since the original Counter-Strike. The only thing that will curb this addiction, if it catches on, is the fact that I need to devote 40 minutes at a time to finish a game.

Hmmm, curious. If anyone has a beta key, I'd be glad to join in.
Need a break from all that BlazBlue hectic... and King's Bounty is a tad too calm :-P

I've been wanting to put some time into HoN, but after watching those vids, I'm having second thoughts. It looks fantastic, but I don't think I take games seriously enough to put up with someone squawking at me all game long about every mistake. I get squashed in LoL, so I'm sure this game would eat me alive. Still, I feel like I need to give HoN a fair shot since it seems to have so much to offer.

FoxSpirit, I can send you a key if you still need one. PM me :D

I've played maybe 2 dozen nub games now. Haven't had a problem myself. I've had a few people say "lol ur bad", but I just say "yeah, feel free to direct me :P". There are a few asshats here and there, but that comes with any competitive game.

Posted in your HoN thread (yeah about Angel :P). Keep em coming. Was great to see some insight into higher level play.

LOL
Oh man, I looked in that thread, saw your name and was like... wtf deja vu... only 3 posts but why do I know this name...?

Angel's a fun guy to play with though. He does get angry often (including at me and his other friends) but he definitely knows what he's talking about.

I've been hearing nothing but crap about how unfriendly to noobs HoN currently is. Is it even worth it for me to beg for a beta key, since I have absolutely no DotA knowledge at all? Are there any tutorials/skirmish modes?

If you enjoy playing Blizzard custom games, then the final product is going to blow your mind away, but even the beta is a ton of fun. Some people go into it and hate it, but almost everyone I know, including those that have never heard of DotA, play it and enjoy it (with the only turnoff being the community).

There's currently no tutorials, but the forums are a wealth of information. There is a single-player practice mode that you can screw around with though.

The GAF community is extremely active though, and there are plenty of new players in it, so I'd still urge you to check it out.

True, I don't expect everyone to be a jackass like the guy in the video. Chances are most of the people in the game are quite nice in general. My reflexes and general dexterity are far below normal (for reasons out of my control), and I have a bit of a thin skin about it sometimes. Just seems like a recipe for disaster :lol I'm sure if I found a casual and friendly clan to play intersquad games with, I'd love the game.

My god...we played against [GAF]Firefly tonight. Wow. He went Pebbles and went 26-1 until I had to leave. :lol

I got my first taunt -> SMACK DOWN in that match though. :D

Hes a total nub, always loses when on my team and pwnd his Zephyr with Hellbringer too.

That guy talking throughout the second half of your vid was pretty embarrassing. Totally embodies the DOTA community stereotype.

P.S. I'm totally stealing steam bath -> portal key escape.

Well, I have finally decied to see what this "DOTA" stuff is all about by getting into this beta, all I can say is this:

Why didn't I try this before? Very tactical, teamplay is essential and there is lots to learn, all good. It doesn't look half bad either, for a game that is literally trying to look like WC3++.

I've been mostly playing with an American gaming community I frequent (I'm a sucker for punishment it seems, I'm even known as the Token Brit there!), but if anyone here wants to help a learner progress, my name in game is er...StopIt (Oh the imagination!)

I hate Pebbles, and Chronos too, :(

The community for this game is slowly withering away at my will to leave, let alone continue to play this game. I'm really enjoying the game itself, but I'm getting mighty sick of being verbally abused CONSTANTLY, even in "noobs only" games simply for being well, a noob.

Hey, do any of you have an extra beta key maybe? Loved DOTA and this seems even better with the interface and all, thanks :)

This is what I feared. Sounds like something that would make grown men cry. :lol But eh. I'll be pulling out my beard and sign and trying to find someone on Facebook or something who pulled away with extra keys during that event. It just looks really snazzy.

And who knows, it could be the first S2 game I play before waiting until it's free!

sorry to hear that, I hate the community as well and its the same as dota, but once you grow a thick skin and just avoid them its a really enjoyable game. If you cant do that try and play with all friends and people you know, very awesome and fun when you can do that.

well i just finished my first round of gaming, played 3 times with jez, the healer dude

pretty awesome game in my opinion! learning to redo hotkeys is kinda tricky- i dont like how i hvae to use my pinky finger on my left hand to do spells since it is more convenient to always have it over A so you can try to deny and stuff.

gotta start picking up some of these heros now- i dont recognize some spells, mainly some of the ults. that seducer chick is a pain! i dont even know what exactly the spells are doing but she seems like a tough one to fight. kinda hard for me to differentiate my allies from my enemies when there is a lot of chaotic stuff going on, but that is kind of how dota was as well. just gotta learn how to recognize everyone quickly and see through some of the junk.

having a great time, much love to exodu5 for the invite. hopefully i can get an invite to the clan sometime soon and then i will look really cool! and i might play some games with a few of you guys and see where i stand!

See, I think the major problem here is non-noobs playing in those games.

I always make my own game, and I make sure to kick anyone a decent margin over 1500PSR, or with a higher than 1:1 KD. Like I said...I haven't had too many problems with the community so far.

I get kicked from noob-only games and my PSR is in the 1200's. That's what I get for getting schooled by my brother in 1-on-1's when I was first learning. :lol

Game is pretty fun but... I have to learn ALL the characters because I can only pick one out of three which are choosen randomly? Wtf? :lol

You picked an SD game. That mode you only get to choose from a random agi, random str, random int.

Pick an AP game if you want to select from the whole roster.

Me and my friends have been playing this pretty much all weekend (or whenever I haven't been rewatching LOST). I'll keep saying it: so good.

My favorite character so far is probably Blood Hunter, but I'm assuming his usefulness might taper off as I start facing more experienced players. His ultimate is absolutely devastating, and lets him take most players on 1v1 no problem. His first skill is also incredibly versatile...it can be cast on himself to output massive dps, or cast on enemies who rely on spells to silence them for 15 seconds. Throw the ultimate on them, and they can't run, unless they want to die. Either way, they're probably dead.

I randomed blood hunter once but my experience was pretty bad. Maybe I had a bad team that game, but it was hard to me to kill anything with him. I decided to never pick him again but atleast I know what his skills are. Atleast I understand his skills now so I don't run too much when he ultimates.

On the opposite side of the coin, whenever I fight blood hunter, I feel like he is easy to kill even in 1v1.

He's best when he's when he has someone with him, since your opponent is damned if they run or damned if they stick around.

If your solo and hunter+friend finds you... you're pretty much fucked (granted if you're equal levels etc).

So I hate to ask again, but does anyone have anymore keys left they'd be willing to give out or trade for a LoL beta key? PM me :)

This looks the most interesting out of all the dota clones I've seen. Am diggin those character designs.
How many clones are there now? LoL, Demigod, this? How do they compare to each other? to original dota?
Anyway I'd love to try this out when they do an open beta
unless anyone wants to give me a beta key right now ;)

i am still learning a lot of these ults as well. since i dont recognize some characters from dota i dont realize what their ults are until they happen. i kept hitting the guy who would heal when he ulted if you damaged him, but it was a case where i knew what the ult was- i just didnt know was doing it and didnt recognize that person until suddenly they had gone from low health to half health because i was being an idiot.

i cant play AR games yet. the way that i am trying to approach this game right now is the same way i started out when i played real dota- just trying to play individual heroes over and over until i get the hang of them and figure out what the best items are to buy. once you learn one guy really well you can kind of put that in your pocket and move on to the next.

trying to get good at devourer but it is frustrating. some of the hook points in mid are screwed up- you dont pull people up ledges automatically so trying to hook them and pull them across the river up to your ledge doesnt work out most of the time- you just pull them into the river and they can walk right away. guess i will keep plugging away til i feel i am decent and move on!

Heroes of Newerth - 3 maps currently, with a server browser and pre-game lobby. Essentially DotA, with a much better engine. No lag in game, very good out of game and in game chat/clan/friends interface, stat tracking, much improved item store, etc... It has both the benefit and the downside to being dota - it's better balanced than LoL or Demigod, but it might feel a little stale to long term DotA players.

LoL - one map, matchmaking only. Uniquely designed heroes. Very heavy item importance...much moreso than DotA or HoN. Items are stat boosts only, however, and do not provide abilities other than passive ones. Painful out-of-game interface compared to HoN, but overall the game is quite promising (and hey, it's free!).

Agreed... blood hunter can chase you down and kill you if you run. But he needs support to deal enough damage first.

Though I remember playing Tempest with an allied BH in a lane vs. Electrician and Scout. Electrician bound me, Scout ganked me, BH stood around. :(

That's only early game. A late game BH is one of the strongest agi carries around.

BH was dumb. He should have silenced Electrician, rendering him useless. When you two would undoubtedly start taking them down (unless Electrician has massive damage being boosted by the silence), they run away and BH ulti's them. Wam, bam.

Even early game, BH can have a strong mind game over most heroes, IMO. I forego a set of runes and get additional mana pots, since lifeleach from kills beats out runes. With the additional mana pots, you can keep casting the silence/DOT at level 1 on the enemy, dealing 20dps and silencing for 5 seconds. During that time, they'll often be intimidated enough by you to run away if you chase them. Just keep this up for the first 6 levels until you get your ultimate. I've found BH is really good at farming mid because of this.

Then again, I play noob games. :lol
