Heroes of Newerth Beta PC (dota clone)

No Annihilation. =\

I usually buy Power Supply for my STR heroes if there are opposing INT heroes. Since we had 4 INT, you probably should have sprung for one.

Yea, I had just gotten a bit cock-sure because I was Arma the game before and I just steamrolled shit. I didn't get a power supply that time so.....yea <_<

These brazilian guys like farming so much. Everyone's so careful agh such a boring game.

The new UI has some good ideas but isnt well thought out. I think notifications should use the space on the lower right where they used to pop up and there's free space anyway instead of covering the main panel. The Lobby UI is... horrendous. The Avatars with Chiprel/BS make it look stupid, the surrounding graphical flourishes are larger and popout more than the relevant text which are now even smaller. During loading, the hero pics are redundant and it is unclear what the numbers mean as sometimes it looks like loading order just like before but other times it looks like random numbers. Oh and there's no way to see starting gold so randoms and repicks are invisible even to yourself unless you dig back in the chatlogs. And since we're going into open beta soon... why make the Lobby UI even more complex for newbs? It's counter intuitive now. Is it multiple/lower resolution friendly? It looks like a cop-out single solution that involves less assets for standard and widescreen formats.. ahh i dunno hope they fix it soon. Oh yeah and nevermind im still annoyed

I HATE MATCHMAKING!!! FKIN GOD I SOMEHOW ENDED UP ON A TEAM WITH 4 BRAZILIANS! THEY DDNT EVEN TRY TO COMMUNICATE WITH ME! HOW IS THISD POSSIBLE?

Dude, that's nothing compared to what happened to me.

I landed into a game with a crazy, deranged, flaming dr. who nerd.

So game starts and the crazy and me were bottom against zephyr and vindi. Ofc we get harrassed to hell and back by Vindi and around level 3 he gets pulled into the grinder by zephyr gust and crawls back to tower very, very low on hp. At which point he declares "this lane is useless" and heads to top leaving me alone. Top was a solo lane too because warbeast was jungling.

Anyways he keeps flaming me and a few minutes later he goes to defend a tower, I go behind him, he is engaged by the enemy and I back away reminding him flaming team members without reason is a bad idea. He dies and we start a huge flamefest that lasted the whole game. He even went and showed himself to be a racist as he mistook me by an italian and proceed to throw smears against several nationalities, including italians, which in turn revealed we had a real italian in the team. Said guy joins the flamefest against him.

Eventually he says he's going AFK because his GF is coming and his GF doesn't care wether or not he wins online games. Autokick got rid of him.

Yet another LOAD defeat!

This time, get a load of this, a push strategy with 3 healers and no hard-carry! Game lasted 51 minutes and LOAD even had a full farmed yurnero!

Thumbs-down for the idiotic observers =/

That was old-skool DOTA play right there, PUSH PUSH PUSH and support each other.

Just had an excellent match in matchmaking. Odd. Neither Plagu nor Jerry got banned, so I played OP Rider and the other team picked up Jeraziah. On our time we had Legio jungle so we could have two solo lanes. After several team fights, out team went for Kongor. The other team had it warded apparently, so a teamfight/kongor battle ensued. Two died from both teams, but I killed kongor. One of the dead players from the other team picked up the token of life with their team's courier though, which we hadn't expected at all. At that point, we were farmed pretty hard. I picked up shaman's headdress and Sac stone for shits and giggles before the final push. It was a ten minute siege involving us storming top lane and then finishing of the barracks of mid that we had failed to destroy in an earlier push before ending the game. As plagu, I had fortified boots and astrolabe on me as well as my basic armouring skill. I was able to stay in the base the entirety of the battle, armouring my team mates and spamming astrolabe as much as I could. By the time the game ended, I had thirteen charges on my sac stone. It was awesome.

Very good preorder numbers compare to other rts games for a new IP.

Today's patch is much needed and it fixed alot of bugs. I think they are good to go for open beta tomorrow.

fixed the bug where chat would switch defaults from TEAM to ALL after the bans. That was waaaay annoying.

Queue massive amounts of forum posts of "dota is wai bettar lololol this is for nabs have fun losers LOLOLLOL."

On the plus side MM should be like shooting vindicators in a barrel.

I was actually in a game where every player was convinced that DOTA was a better game. Never before have I had the urge to kill so badly.

In any case, at least this now means I can do some steamrolling due in part to the new players. Worse off though is that theyll probably be on MY team too :lol

Since that crappy night of in-houses the other night, my PSR has gone from 1540 straight down to 1390. :lol

Open beta means uninstallation and taking another self-imposed break for a while... :lol

Servers so laggy. Nothing like playing Armadon and stabbing "W" only to see "Spine Burst is not ready" taunting you.

And a first: two consecutive AP games, both times randomed Hag.

As someone who has been getting crushed at starcraft 2 (rightfully so, new to that series) I think it may be easier to try out this single unit management deal.

What are some good basic tips, or class to start off with?

Ditto; I've never played DoTA and would appreciate any newbie tips :)

Also, my website will have someone attending the HoN launch event today in SF; I haven't played the game enough to have really in-depth interview questions, so if anyone has anything they'd like to ask S2, you can post it here (or in this thread) if you want:

Ranged heroes are good to start out with so you can last hit/deny safely from a distance.

Plague rider is an easy hero to start learning since he has an easy ultimate skill.

You want a nice tip?

Learn to pick. Bad team composition means you lose before the game starts. There are videos out there in youtube and plenty internet pages (search for dota instead of hon, the same things apply as far as hero roles is concerned).

There are two things that matter, hero roles and peak power (as related to gametime). Buncha early game heroes will loose after the game's ran for 20 minutes, buncha lategame heroes won't get to the lategame before being genocided over and over.

If you pick first, you pick first. But it's worth it to wait a bit, see what your teams pick to ensure all the needs are covered.

Don't be afraid to ask which hero to play, either. Your teammates hate being with a noob, but they hate it much less if you are willing to learn. Ask which heroes to get. Ask which items to get and skills to level. There are also guides for most heroes on the Heroes of Newerth Forums (for example, here) that can tell you what your hero does and when you should do it.

Also, play the tutorial. It's basic, basic stuff but it helps you not look like a complete noob.

Thanks guys, will do my best to make myself somewhat usable as a team member.

One other question, how long do the games usually last?

Lowest possible time is 15, but they can go longer than an hour. Generally matches last between 30 and 45 minutes, though. One other bit of advice: Don't play EM Games. It'll be harder if you start playing real matches.

if anyone wants to add me and play that would be awesome.

I am not good at this game lol, but i understand the concept and how to play. i just never know what to buy for my characters and stuff. But i listen well and you can boss me around.

I really really love the game even though I suck.

ingame name is same as forum name

Open Beta is great! In two nights I've clawed my way up from the low 1000's to the high 1200's. Not the stat reset I was hoping for, but it's working! :lol

HoN's community amuses the hell out of me. I'm no stranger to nerd rage
others' and my own
but to see a guy screaming at his team about being terrible at the game when their own PSR rides the 1100 line without seeing the irony of it all is almost fascinating.

Having said that, it would be nice to have some regular folks to team up with. My coworkers don't play much anymore.

Some tips from a guy who's been around and about the HoN and DOTA scene for a little while (and mostly as a noob).

1. The game is much more fun with friends. Find a couple that don't mind when you have an off day. Everyone has them. Understanding gamer friends are this genre's best ally. Growing with another person has been, for me, very rewarding. I've got a handful of people I've played DOTA/HoN with now for a couple years. Actually talking to them and strategizing ways your hero composition can work is rewarding....... as a noob you won't be talking about these things right away..... it's the friendly thing I wanna harp on the most.

2. Play as a single ranged character as you learn the ropes of the game. Many will tell you to play RANDOM games. We're not there yet... and the information you get will be overwhelming. You need to first learn how to move... defend... and how to build items and what they do... before you worry even about your hero. As you play more and more... you will slowly learn what the other heros are doing to you... and what to do when confronting them. From my experience... I learned the game the fastest by sticking to one or two heroes and THEN branching out. At least the nerd rage ceased when I could at least be competent at a single hero.

3. Check the web. The web is full of builds and build orders. I'm not a fan of YOU MUST BUILD A GUY THIS WAY. However... when you are starting out... it's good to get a general idea of what types of items you should be building/using with a specific type of hero. Also... web guides give great information about the hero you are playing. Take 30 minutes to browse the guides of different heroes. The people in game are not so eager to teach you... so you need to teach yourself.

4. Don't die. When learning it is imperative to note that even if you don't know what you are doing... you can still be effective if you aren't dying/feeding. I recall a game of League of Legends I had last night. It was only my 5th game ever... and I was grouping with a bunch of level 30s. I held my own quite nicely... and easily... because I stayed behind my creep wave... and around my towers... and tried to stay close to my teammates as the game entered the mid and late stages. These simple strategies are paramount throughout the 3 HERO type games. No matter your skill level... being able to hold yourself back and not press too much is something anyone can do.

5. Use these forums for questions. Generally speaking... the guys on these forums are great. If you have any noobish questions... ask them here. The HoN community sucks. Can't sugarcoat this. But you have an inhouse community here that will help you through.

6. Honcast.com Seriously... great site. The guys there shoutcast the top tier players in the world. Check it out to see what you are getting into. You may not understand everything... but the more you play... the more you'll wanna see what your heroes and team strategies should be doing.

7. Easy Mode (EM) sucks. Took me a long time to see this. It's just not the game. I used to think AP modes lasted longer... but in reality... both APEM and AP modes last the same amount of time. Since that's the case... play the game as it was meant to be played... non-EMs only (matchmaking does this for you automatically now... so.... maybe a moot point).

There are no bots besides the one in the tutorial. You'll need to practice live against other players.

Im sorry =/

PD: we just had the epicest game ever. Oh my god.

What are the basic item- rules for HoN? I've played LoL alot, so I've got a pretty good idea on the basics of the mechanics, and heroes I can memorize. But for the life of me, I can't seem get the right item for the right situation. Either I buy crappy stuff, or find myself saving up for too long and having it not make a difference by the time I do manage to save up. Oh, and I tend to starve alot on HP and mana (especially on the latter)

I also seem to be having problems for picking the right hero for me. I tend to play hi-damage dealers with a sprink of utility in LoL (Zilean and Twisted Fate, for example), and haven't really ran into an equivelant so far. Tried out a couple of agility heroes, like valkyrie at first, since she had that spear- throw which did ridiculous damage/stun at long range, and the leap has saved me from many ganks (not to mention her ulti, which would be lol wtf with a well coordinated team). But the spear was easily dodged and she didn't really seem to pack that much survivability outside her leap.

And lest all else fail, may I ask what are the basic easymode- heroes, something that's generally easy to pick on and doesn't really require much to pull off? (although I do suspect that this has been asked before, but dare not to browse the last 38 pages to find the answer)

Most Int heroes, if you can land your stun you're useful to the team. Super easy mode would be something like plague rider.

a) items: each hero has a set of items that work best. At this point, just check guides at the hon forums for ideas on itemization. For the mana situation, bottle and batteries work wonders - they're cheap items and will hold you until you can get stuff with good manaregen.

b) eZ heroes: Plague, obv. Forsaken Archer is pretty easy to play but you need to learn to land the arrow stun. Tree is sort of easy to play but its not a high damage dealer. For the better combination of utility and damage, Puppet r0xx0rs.

Try out Pyro, Witch Slayer or Deadwood, they all have 800 damage plus ulti hits and they all have stuns too. These are all pretty much heroes who gank and kill you in a 1v1 if the stun gets you, also Deadwoods ulti is Physical, so screw your shrunken head :D

Stay clear of Archer if you ask me, such low hp.

God that Alienware Final played out like a pub stomp game, from the get go it just seemed like
Hell Bourne
had it in the bag, were it not for
Chronos amazing farming
some how game would have ended well early, kind of disappointed the final not seeing a better match really.

What selection mode was this played in? where was
Silencer :|

Was banning draft, I was curious about picks too at first.

Was an exciting game just to see LOAD play it out so well even without Chu, but yeah 5 got stomped pretty bad. Their Kraken was just awful. He had ONE good ultimate cheese that whole game. I spose it didn't help that 3 of the hellbourne players had blink.

After a month or so, I have finally gotten decent at HON and to a point where I have good kill/death ratios per match with better win ratios for my team. I am surprised it took me so long as I am fairly decent at DOTA even with the vast number of heroes in that game.

My advice after playing HON:

*Bottle and Ghost Marchers are essential for most Intelligence heroes along with Power Supply. Get them quick. You are going to be ganking a lot as an intelligence hero and you can't affort to "save up" your money for a bigger item. In DOTA I usually just played around with a regular boots/bottle and saved up for a Blink Dagger but that just doesn't fly in HON where so many other people are beating you in movement speed cuz they got Marchers and you don't.

*Orb effects work differently in HON. READ THEM CAREFULLY! The Sange n Yasha equivalent in HON is actually REALLY GOOD. It's an essential item for someone like Corrupted Disciple IMO.

*ALWAYS MAKE GOOD HERO PICKS. In DOTA it was possible to get away with 2 agility carry heroes or even 3 sometimes but that doesn't work in HON at all! Unless your other agility hero is Valkyrie you should never have 2 or more agility heroes in a decent match. It always ends in disaster.

*In HON, the "one man show" does not work. People stick together and work as a team where as in DOTA the game is usually played among groups of 2 with 2-3 heroes per group. You will also get yelled at for kill stealing so always use your powerful nukes first as opposed to last so your team gets maximum benefit. This is also why area of effect nuking and area silence is godly in HON and this is also why support heroes are extremely valuable in HON (Jereziah is godly in HON!).

*Think twice before picking a melee carry hero. Seriously. The only melee heroes I pick in HON are Hammerstorm (area of effect stun), Magmus (area of effect game all around), Pestilence (AOE stun, armor minus, epic ganker), Behemoth (AOE stunner/nuker), Blacksmith (nuker/stunner), Pebbles (AOE stunner/nuker) and Chronos (imba carry hero but only when team really needs one. Has an imba AOE disable). I avoid picking heroes like Swiftblade, Madman and Rampage simply because they don't benefit the team early on that much and usually if they have an intelligence heavy team the amount of ganks that your team has to go through usually means that your team ends up conceding early on. You never get a chance to shine where as the heroes I mentioned get some good game early on despite being melee.

*Most other things that apply to DOTA apply to HON as well, probably more so. Situational awareness goes a long way and in HON you can even see the opponents mana so you can be more aware of how things will play out. Seeing the mini-map is essential as is making MISS calls. Warding is essential, so are hunts. Also it might be me but in HON neutral creeping isn't that rewarding as compared to DOTA. It's usually those with high kills that end up taking away the game, not those who just sit there and farm all day long.

I have had some very good games with Soul Stealer, Witch Slayer, Corrupted Disciple, Blacksmith, Thunderbringer and Moon Queen following these essential tips. There are more tips, like animation cancelling during attacks is more useful in HON and even spell animation cancelling (for someone like SS it is mandatory for good game).

I have been playing a lot on my second account lately. I usually play a game or two almost every day still. Both accounts hover around 1700.

Shishka, you should join the GAF clan channel and have someone invite you. There are usually a good handful of GAFers on almost daily.
