Hey Americans! Why do you hate vinegar so much?

God, I have such a weakness for that stuff. I know it's rubbish, but I get it on my fish and chips... every single time.

This is it for most/average americans. Though some know better and buy something a little more refined.

Also I have made a balsamic dressing before it's freakin delicious.... I have to admit though I'm a sucker for feta cheese in my salad.
 
Speak for yourself OP. Not all Americans are like that. I'm german in my tastes I've come to conclude: steak fries, mayo (real mayo), and vinegar.

You can get both styles (and many more) in the US.

The picture for American Bacon looks like more of the mass market stuff, while the British Bacon picture is what you get when you pay a bit more.
 
I'm American as they get, and I love the shit out of malt vinegar. I put it on so many different foods, and cook with it as much as possible. The aroma is intoxicating. In fact, the only two scents that sexually arouse me more are "New Car Scent" and "A-1 sauce". A-1 is just, fucking... i came.

Must have been the places he went to. Most restaurants have it as a condiment although you may have to ask for it.

Balsamic, white, red, apple cider, malt vinegar are all found in any grocery store. As are salt and vinegar flavored chips (crisps). Although it wouldn't surprise me if that flavor wasn't in a gas station. It seems like BBQ is the most popular variety.

Mayo has a neutral flavor. I don't see how anyone could like miracle whip but not regular mayo. I do understand how someone could like mayo and not miracle whip. I'll eat both but I prefer regular mayo. Miracle whip is more of an acquired taste.

Exactly. This is the American way to do it, and it's the best way to do it.

This stuff is the nectar of the gods. I don't know how common it is outside of the US, but if you've never had Kansas City-style BBQ sauce, you're missing the fuck out.

Oh man I respectfuly disagree. One of the things I hate about living in Australia, I can't grab some of the chips my friends have bought without having to deal with this shitty substitute for salt smothering them.

Also vinegar is the god tier condiment.
 
Putting vinegar on fries and stuff is pretty popular and common here in Maryland. I thought it was weird when I first got here. Do all Five Guys restaurants had vinegar available or is that just a local thing?

We get "American" bacon in the UK and most of Northern Europe as well, it's called streaky and its usually at the cheap end behind back bacon and middle bacon, which are meatier and for most purposes way better than streaky. The main American thing about streaky in the US as opposed to over here is usually in the cure which is typically much sweeter than in most EU markets. However sweet cured streaky, back and middle are widely available in the UK usually from artisan pork outlets, farmers markets where you will typically get thick cut bacon of all varieties which the baby jesus would be proud to serve to fucking god himself.

Ponying up a plate of only sweet streaky would get your ass kicked in most civilised househoulds this side of the pond :)
 
Your preprepared mayo wars are misplaced, make your own if you want decent mayo. The taste is way better and a little goes a lot further so you don't have to have a heart attack by 45 if you eat it a lot. Use a neutral oil perhaps spiked with a little olive oil, egg yolks at room temp = mayo from god.
 
Been living in the US for 10 years now. The moment when they don't give me vinegar with my fish and chips is the day I go on a rant. Luckily it hasn't happened yet.
 
Malt vinegar is typically reserved for seafood places/fish and chips type places/british pubs.

Salt and vinegar chips are widely available, but are a niche product after plain, barbeque, and sour cream & onion(which beat the hell out of any other potato chip IMO)

the real reason vinegar isn't as popular is hot sauce though. It's got a acidic vinegar bite, but brings so much more to the table that it'd be silly to stick with vinegar.

Even the traditional malt vinegar domain of fried fish is being taken over by hot sauce.

Any vinegar based condiment is better than ketchup, mustard and mayo though. Ketchup is way too sweet, sugar and tomatoes don't work together. I can't even stand the smell of mustard, it makes my nose itch. Mayo is just bland fatty and boring and it just has that icky slimy kind of texture that can ruin anything you put it on.

My taste for Miracle Whip has vanished over time. It's too sweet for me now except as the base for salad type sandwiches. Mayo is fairly neutral but helps with dry sandwich syndrome. I get a spicy version and olive oil version to break the monotony.

Vinegar on chicken tenders does not sound good, but love it on fish and some cooked veggies. Like all condiments for me, it is not a one size fits all solution.

I like the American version better. The other one seems like a very thin pork chop.

It sounds like you were at shitty hamburger restaurants rather than pubs or fish and chip restaurants. If you go to a pub, or a fish and chip place, they will have vinegar on the table. If you go to mcDonalds they will not.

As to vinegar, you can find it in the south almost everywhere. Both with oil for salads or just as a dipping condiment for fried fish or whatnot. More often in my experience though, people use lemon wedges on fried chicken or fish.
 
Salt and Vinegar chips are everywhere as far as I know, so I dunno what's up with that. I also know a lot of people who like vinegar with fries, and I know plenty of places where it's available. Definitely never heard of it for chicken though.
 
You couldn't find Salt and Vinegar chips? Sounds like you simply walked into the wrong store, maybe go to an actual grocery store next time. Gas stations generally charge you more anyway. You'll also find your vinegar there as well.

Try stir frying seasoned chicken with soybean oil, and a second time with the liquid fat from bacon after pan frying it. There is such a massive difference in flavor.

I'm not expert in making mayo, but the soy oil rant has to do with other condiments. I can't find buttermilk ranch with cream (uses soy) or olive oil and vinegar (uses soy). And these oils they are replacing have tons of flavor. Same is true with basically any condiment. The good italian sauces are loaded with herbs, spices, heavy extra virgin olive oil, and ripe tomatoes, the typical stuff has become flavorless bland tomatoes, salt, sugar, soybean oil.

Besides flavor soybean oil is very questionable as a food source. No one ate it until 50 years ago. Humans only eat oils that can be extracted without the aid of hexane solvents and a processing process more complicated than a meth lab.

actually yes, the rest of the world does think you're weird for putting that .. stuff .. on your fried potato dish. the standards here are tomato sauce (not quite the same as ketchup), vinegar, and mayonnaise/aioli. alternatively chili sauces, hp/brown sauce, gravy etc.

the closest thing we have to ranch dressing would be some kind of aioli i suppose. frankly there is no one condiment i would favour over all others - the world of condiments is such a varied and splendiforous place, why restrict yourself to only one colour of that rainbow?

My grandfather and dad are from England, they introduced me to this growing up. I put it on fries, steak, salad etc. Love this stuff.

Quite possibly the most disgusting thing I've ever put into my mouth. Fuck this stuff.

This is true. They do like sweet things though. Anything with extra sugar seems to taste good southern americans, in my experience.

British person here:

Vinegar makes me throw up. I can't actually be in a room with an open bottle because I begin to literally gag. I won't even touch a table vinegar bottle with my skin, I always wrap my hand in my sleeve first, just in case any of its residue is on the bottle.

The substance repulses me in a way nothing else does. Its vile. If I eat a chip that accidentally has some on, I'm already on my way to throwing up. None of this is hyperbole, it actually happens.

I don't know why it has such an immediate effect on me. It doesn't seem to bother anyone else.
 
American here, OP, and I'm with you. For some crazy fucking reason, we just associate it with seafood. If you ask for it anywhere else, you're pretty much SOL.

And while we're on the subject, HP sauce fucking rocks!!!
