HEY! C'MON C'MON: It's the Giga Powered Neo Geo Appreciation Thread

I saw the screen had the wrong aspect ratio and immediately disregarded it.

Let's face it, as long as these mini consoles don't offer a 240p option they're always going to feel disappointing, no matter how cool they look. I know it's a niche feature, but it would be a nice gesture for hardcore fans.

Even though I'm getting a SNES classic, it definitely feels like both it and the NES classic are not really aimed at the biggest fans of the source material.

I hear what you're saying, but so long as it's emulation, they never would've totally pleased that demographic to begin with. The implications of 240p would mean there would have to a AV multi-out to be worthwhile, and that in itself is already taking this product outside the scope of who and what this was intended for -- lapsed gamers who want an accessible way to play SNES.

In a weird way, this might actually get back back into playing games instead of just messing around with cords and connections for 45mins before inevitably just watching Netflix. I find the lack on options on this a bit cathartic, ha.

Hello folks.
Saw this ad on my local Craigslist and was considering it.
Don't have much experience with NEO GEOs of any sort or arcade cabinets, so I was wondering if you thought this was something worth pursuing, price too high, things to watch out for, etc.
I sent him an email asking for some more details and why he was selling but he wasn't willing to expound much.

Shit man at that price I'd bite, always wanted a Neo big red cab before shifting interest to candy cabs. Don't see many bigreds for sale nowadays, and the ones I've seen go for over $1000 for even 1 slot cabs.

Thanks for this. Anyone else have any feedback?

I see Big Reds come up for sale petty frequently in my area. (WAY more so than the Candy Cabs that seem more abundant on the West coast of North America.) I used to own a Naomi Universal. They are a pain to move, and the odd dimensions of this cab may be hard to easily fit through standard-size doorways. It will be top-heavy because of the CRT (it's also a lot taller than you think.) After the novelty wears off, you're sort of left with a big, clunky piece of furniture that really only has one very specific use. (I'm not trying to be a downer, I loved my candy cab, but I am just trying to put some perspective on the situation once the honeymoon period wears off!)

The reality is, many think this is a sounder "investment" than it actually is; there is a reason you see people giving away cabs if you're willing to pick them up. For every person wanting an arcade machine, there is someone else sick of putting up with it's bullshit.

Use this knowledge to your advantage if you go through wth putting an offer on it. Good luck!

I didn't want to brag and rub it in but yes :)
I just have to figure out which system is going to get rotated out (if any), there's no more room under the TV. So hard to choose. Will probably just replace the TV stand eventually!
Congrats on the finally getting the system.

I remember that stand... Used to have it along with the 36" Vega HD trinitron back around 2000. That thing is super solid, as it had to be to support a 200 lbs+ TV!

So, theoretically, could there be a flash drive-type device for the Neo Geo CD down the road? I want to pick up some NGCD games almost entirely for the music, but I know that the load times would kinda kill the fun of actually playing the games. That Polymega thing from a few months ago has me wondering what would happen if there was a hardware solution to that whole thing.

I totally understand that. Until I set up all my consoles so that I don't have to swap cables anymore, playing a retro game was a bit of a messy chore. I had cables and controllers littered around my entire apartment on a "retro game day". But one day I just decided I've had enough and spent like 5-6 hours wiring everything together. Now I'm back to just playing games again.

Looks rad. And Last Blade 2 is a fantastic game. Enjoy.

I'm on kind of a Neo Geo kick again, for whatever reason, which is fucking stupid, since I still don't have my Omega. That's not news, though.

But I bought Metal Slug X and that Neo Geo: A Visual History book. Metal Slug X was an easy choice -- one of my favorite games ever... I think. I haven't played it since probably 2001. Well, actually, I played the PS1 port after I bought it in 2006. That was a mistake.

The book, though? I figured I kinda had to buy that. It feels like that was made for me.

So, I'm up to a whopping 3 games now. Such variety!

Anyone here have one of the Fusion converters that were on indiegogo awhile back?

There's something wrong with my Phantom-1 converter and no one seems to be able to figure out what it is.

I think I've posted here about it before, but I get vertical lines on sprites on all my MVS games, and I know it's not my AES since my AES games play and look perfect.

So I got on the waiting list for one of the Fusion converters, since it is SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the other converters out there. Just wondering if anyone here has one, or had one, or used it at all?

He seems to be going REALLY slowly through the waiting list, so I'm sure its going to be some time till I have to pay for mine.

Eventually I'd like to just say fuck it and buy one of the new flash carts but as you guys know they are expensive.

She's finally 18 (weeks). I thought about making an age of consent joke and then talking about violating an arcade board, but that seemed like it would be in poor taste. Besides, that would get awkward when I find an actual (human) girl who's into Neo Geo and isn't a cutter, because as wonderful as that may be, she will always and forever be the side chick. That MV-1C is raw as hell.

Last Blade 2 is like the best looking gen 4 game imo

Regarding 2d sprites certainly. When it comes to monitor resolution though, Battle Beast on PC had 2d cartoon sprites at 640x480 resolution in 1995. Though animation was very choppy due to hardware limitations.
When Skullgirls was released with full animation much later, I remembered that game.

I bought Bust-A-Move Again. I wanted some variety for whenever I finally get my system. This brings me up to 4 games, which I acknowledge is pathetic, but whatever -- gotta start somewhere. Feels really good to be buying arcade boards, in any case. It really is the final frontier of game collecting.

What are the other 3?

By the way, can I just make a note of the fact that the "Neo Geo games on Switch" thread is like... way longer than this one is, despite that I posted this in 2013? Apparently, people of true culture are difficult to come by. Buncha broke-ass motherfuckers over there.

And yeah, I double posted. Fuckin' sue me.

I dunno,

Pretty happy to grab Metal Slug X on my Switch. Just like having NAM-1975 on it. Quite a bit more exciting then grabbing it on original hardware. Plus, There are just much better sticks for the newer systems.

I'd certainly go for a Neo-SD but then that means getting another system.

The ability to have all these classics on the big gorgeous handheld is very nice. Can not be undersold.

Oh, I totally get the appeal. Just saying I'm amused by how much attention the imitation is getting.

Aaaaand Metal Slug 3 procured. So now I have the holy trinity of Metal Slugs. I think I still want to get 2 at some point, because despite its issues, it's still a cool game that feels distinct from X. 4 and 5... well, 4 I definitely don't want. I've heard 5 is good, but I dunno.

5 is underrated and has some interesting stuff. 4 is correctly rated as the worst in the NEO GEO series of MS games.

MS6 is pretty cool too by the way. For people with more money than sense.

Yeah...at one point I considered getting an Atomiswave mobo just for that and Dolphin Blue. NOT WORTH IT! Glad I didn't. TBH I can't justify buying any non NeoGeo mobos these days. There's not nearly the library of fantastic games for a tad more affordable price on even CPS. Kinda regret having a supergun now, some part of me wants to sell/trade my setup for a clean CMVS or Omega
(if those svelte black unicorns actually exist)
.

I played the PS2 port of 6 way back... I need to give it another shot, but I was unimpressed at the time. The visuals were too dark and something about the audio made all the action feel so much more subdued. Like, there was all kind of shit going on on-screen, and none of it was exciting. It felt like a Metal Slug clone by some indie dev rather than the real deal.

But again, it's been years since I've played that one.

Anyway, I should give 5 a shot. I don't think I've played that one in any capacity. 4, I remember credit feeding through back in 2006. That was a lousy time. Made me question if I really liked Metal Slug at all, honestly.

I have never played the arcade version of MS6, just the PS2 port. I have a feeling the poor sound was an emulation issue.

Shit, I almost forgot to pre order the visual history book.

Yeah, I'm curious if that's the case. The Atomiswave stuff was hit and miss on the PS2. King of Fighters XI ended up being way better on PS2 (additional characters, new stages, the tweaked Ver. B mode)... but then, you had stuff like Neo Geo Battle Coliseum with its terrible load times. And that's to say nothing of the nonsense that ensued when they brought KOF XI to the US, sans the 480p mode that was in the JP release, and NGBC had fixed load times in the US. Fuckin' SNKP.

Shit, I almost forgot to pre order the visual history book.

I preordered it from Amazon, but apparently, that wasn't a real listing, and my order got cancelled. Which was bizarre. The regular edition is still available from Bitmap, themselves, though, so you should be good.

This is a pretty great post. I bought a 4 slot big red about 10 years ago for $600 (which was too expensive then, but what did I know? Came with a few carts)

Pluses
+ makes me happy every time I see it (My inner 10-year-old-at-Fudruckers can't believe I have one of these things)
+ MVS carts are still relatively affordable. You can get a lot of the commons for under $50
+ Multiple slots = multiple games. If you only have room for one machine, a Neo mvs is best
+ conversation piece, occasionally played during house parties

Minuses
- my 4 slot weighs ~300 lbs. I've moved with it four times. You need a fridge dolly and ideally 4 dudes to move it and not damage anything else. With movers, I leave the crt in but tell them to treat it like a "TV thats the size of a fridge"
- it goes unused more often than not
- it can take 10-20 minutes to get a set of games working right sometimes. You have to learn to do the "cart wiggle"

Overall, that point #1 is the selling point for me - makes me happy to see it and sometimes just spending an hour at my cab is better than playing modern games on the tv next to it. If you have a garage / man cave or a bigger place than my small apartment), and aren't planning on moving any time soon, I'd say go for it and join the club! The monitor on that one looks in pretty good shape. Go check it out at least and see if there are some carts involved in the deal.

600 is a good deal for a cabinet like that. If I weren't a lowly NYC apartment dweller and had the same opportunity to acquire one, I'd have done the same thing.

Wow, that sucks. I've been having a lot of issues with Amazon myself lately. And I just pre-ordered the collector's edition from the Bitmap site. Pretty excited! I love Neo Geo stuff. I'd love to get into collecting the actual hardware someday, but my budget right now only allows me art books and PS4/Switch game ports. :p

I agree with this completely -- there is something very surreal and awesome about seeing an arcade machine in your house, that YOU OWN. I remember lusting after arcade hardware as a kid/teen, as it was the pinnacle of technological achieve in terms of games. Even though people are literally giving them away now, I still have a hard time shaking that original perspective I had of them. If you have room for one, and it won't jeopardize any relationship you have with your partner, get one! Lol
