Five that I can't name off the top of my head, three of which I do recognize. Of the remaining two, the random battle bird isn't a distinct character and Chocola has had all of five seconds of screentime ever.

And a +1 for Flynn-era Archie Sonic support, as long as I'm admitting to that anyway.

Really, this many characters isn't so weird for a franchise this old. It's just Sega and Sonic Team refuse to bury certain cast members after they stop being useful.
