Hey Sony... where is our PS4 Activity Log?

I keep saying this, but sony's online infrastructure, front and back ends are stuck in 2005 or something... it's a mess, it's lacking and it feels that any change they make to/on it is like gluing a headlight back to a motorcycle with duct tape!

I got one of these...

So it must be possible to track on a system level. I'm hopeful that they'll stealth add this stuff into a future stability update.

I was very disappointed when I got my Vita that it didn't have anything similar to the 3DS's activity log. The feature should be standard, it is awesome.

hmm, interesting. So, it seems they already track the stats.

Agreed. They should replace Near app with Activity Log.

Notifications and Folders are all I want. Would be really really cool if I could set which friends I get notifications for, but at this point I'd just be happy to get notified when friends log on.

A while back PS sent out an email which talked about trialling an activity log but in the form of a semi-regular email. The layout looked a hell of a lot like the physical info graphic posted above.

An activity log for the console itself is a great idea. Maybe tweet your idea to @Toshimasa_Aoki? You could also suggest it here: http://share.blog.us.playstation.com/

It's on my top wanted features. It's kinda baffling this doesn't come in the console on day one. Should be standard really.

Also, it needs to be able to recognize that my console is in standby mode and doesn't count that time as played (I'm looking at you Witcher 3).

I'm trying to log all the games I play this year and how long I spent on each and... well, I have no idea how long i've played some games on PS4 and I just have to estimate :/ PS4 is messing with my plans. Oh well. Would love this implemented somehow.

I want time played on games.... and also trophy progress like X1.. love knowing how close you are to each achievement. Helps with the hunt.

But most of all... Hero stats from X1... each game has a number of stats that are turned into leader boards at the dash level.... even websites can pull this info and it is fantastic.

Hope Sony adopts some of these if not all..

I'd love to have an activity log, and stats like http://psnprofiles.com/ has.

On top of those, they could show, for example, how long it took to reach certain bosses/areas, how many times it took to beat a boss, and stats about the usage of weapons. That would be nice information to have about something like Bloodborne, and to compare the info with your PSN friends.

The 3DS Activity Log should be standard in every game console.
Yep, I agree. Much more detailed than Steam's implementation, and I wouldn't mind seeing it everywhere. Date of first and last time played, times launched, average length of play sessions (you could calculate this yourself, but why should you when the app does it for you?) and a daily summary of everything you played; the 3DS Activity Log has it all.

Sony really missing out on bank with this one. You got more activity on your servers just by adding a display to what you already have imbedded in the Systems core.

I actually don't know why it is so important for me to able to track my playtime. Steam is great for this - it gives me an opportunity to view my play-history and see that I spent, say, 23 hours on Tomb Raider back in 2013. It's a minor thing, but it gives me something tangible to look at. Funnily enough I don't care about achievements - just the playtime.

I used the feature once on the WiiU and once in the Xbox to see how long I had played Fallout 4.

It's something I can live without but I don't see how it can't be implemented

Those are per game stats. Lots of games keep tracks of stats like how many miles driven in GTA V or how many terminal hacked in Watch_dog. It's all meaningless if you generalized it to all games.

Same, but I think that's more because I try and average ÂŁ1 per hour in terms of value so the playtime is an easy way to track that

Not all games do though, and you can't view the stats on the OS side. Making it mandatory for all games, where applicable, would be welcome.

Its in the news feed your activity on Ps4, you can also see what friends have most played that day and what trophies they got etc.

Not that anybody gives a damn about this stuff and hopefully Sony are smart enough to see that.

Hopefully Sony will continue to optimise the tools and OS where we can eek out that maximum performance for games, as third party games are getting more and more demanding. Nintendo is living in the past.

Sony should focus on

1# game and OS performance
2# server and PSN performance

I'm honestly not sure why you chose my post as a jump off point tbh. I didn't make any statements about the feature's importance, or claim that others don't have it (although I would claim that Sony doesn't have it in the capacity that it's being discussed here). I was just saying that Nintendo currently does it much, much better than anyone else does. Credit where credit's due. I very rarely have anything good to say about Nintendo these days.

With that said though, there's obviously a decent number of people that so in fact care about such statistics.. evidenced by this thread, the playtime logging in the "52 games in a year threads" (which the PS4 makes extremely difficult), sites like HowLongToBeat, etc. This is useful information to plenty of people.. it not being of interest to you, doesn't make it unimportant to others. Especially considering how trivial stats like this are to include in the UI (the console will be tracking it anyway)... so there's nothing really "smart" about leaving them out.

To be honest, I frequently have trouble noticing the differences between the 40% performance difference of the XB1 and the PS4 when playing the same game on each, so I certainly am not that fussed about the low single-digit performance gains where likely to see from OS optimisation. QoL features are far more noticeable and more important to me than that.. and as for OS performance, that's all fine and well (and I agree that it's important), but good performance only really means anything when paired with good functionality... else we may as well just go back to an ever-so-slightly improved version of the Dreamcast's boot menu. I don't really care how quickly you're not telling me that my friends are online.

Each of the console manufacturers have failings that they need to sort out. Microsoft needs to get background music sorted, Sony needs to get notifications sorted, they both need to get folders sorted, and Nintendo needs to get pretty much everything else sorted. "Oh well, as long as the games are performing better" is not something I'll accept from any of them as a bar to settle at... especially as I'll never actually know it to be true. Can you actually quantify the ways that Sony have managed to "eek" out extra performance since launch? Is your OS noticeably faster than it was? I doubt you actually notice anything tangible in these areas, but I sure as hell notice absent featuresets.

On one hand I'd love to see this. On the other hand I don't think I want to know how much time I spent playing diablo 3 and other games I played way too much

I'm not suprised Nintendo has these features, but more as a parental control "Little Johnny has spent HOW LONG on Pokemon x/y/z!!".

It would be a great thing to have and it make's sense if not for the user base but for Sony to help prioritise targeted advertising of dlc etc.

I love my PS4 but let's face it Sony are really lacking in the update area. At this rate we will have every feature we want just as the PS5 launches lol.

It would be pretty nice just to know how long I've played any one game. As an example, the time on my FO4 save is bugged, so I have no clue how long I've been playing. The game save says I've played it for about 22 days, which I know is definitely not the case because I know I tend to burn out prior to the 100hr mark in Bethesda games and I'm finding the gameplay loop to be not nearly as rewarding as previous FO titles. I'm probably around the 60hr mark. Maybe.

When I was looking for stats on my The Order 1886 playtime, I noticed my save on PS4 didn't have that information. IIRC, the saves on PS3 had information about how long you played a game.

A disappointing downgrade, if true system-wide. The PS4 OS is simple and snappy, but it lacks some of the statistical functionality I've come to expect from Steam and Xbox.

To be fair, Sony already likely uses that information for target ads, etc. Just because we can't see how long we're playing for, doesn't mean that the system itself doesn't know, and makes use of it.

Good call on why Nintendo likely does it so well though... that actually makes way too much sense when you put it like that.

meh.

games already have them built in. I can live without my console telling me I haven't 100% a game or how many hours I've played it.

Yes, I need a 3DS style activity log on EVERYTHING! My 3DS and Steam games are happy. My Wii U and Xbox One games feel slightly loved. But my PS4 and Vita games are feeling a little disrespected. They need the lovin' too, ya know.
