Hidden Gems that STILL get no respect

Big_Bang_Mini_Cover.jpg

Seriously, I loved this game. Never finished it, but always wanted a sequel.

Style Savvy: Trendsetters.

Best game I've played so far on the 3DS.

A Nintendo game that has only 5 critic reviews on metacritic. That's how ignored it is.

So you've played both versions? How was the 360?

Yeah, one of my favorite games last gen. There's a lot of content and abilities that someone could easily beat the game without even seeing.

It was fine! Terrible framerate during battles... say 17-23 fps and you probably want to switch the quick time stuff to auto.

The load times were a little wrong and the game is a lot harder, but I've played worde performing games. People used to complaim about the load times on Lost Odyssey but they never bothered me. (But maybe they were better on the PAL version?) I heard the load times on the review build in the US were horrible.

Lost Kingdoms 1 and 2

Developed by From Software no less! Where's Lost Kingdoms 3 on Wii U From?!

Anyway, my pick is the unbelievably underrated Kya: Dark Lineage, developed by Eden, makers of the Alone in The Dark reboot. This game is a competent action adventure starring an interesting female protagonist with decent platforming, stealth, and combat mechanics that are objectively more involved than the fuckin' Arkham games. PLAY this gem if you can find it GAF!

For me it's simple

Stubbs The Zombie
Back To The Future: The Game
War of the Monsters
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Whacked (So many missed how simple and fun this game was)
Twisted Metal Black
Twisted Metal Head On
Freedom Fighters
State of Emergency
Kung Fu Chaos
Blinx The Time Sweaper
Destroy All Humans
ONI

These games were so goddamn underrated by most. Several were not even given a chance by many. Such a shame too.

I had the displeasure of playing the PS2 port of this game which was bitter tripe. Play the PC version of this game if you can. I like this game, it's clearly inspired by Ghost in The Shell, and those anime cutscenes are awesome. This is another game with more involved combat than the Arkham games, yet gets no respect.

:/

Just taking games from last Gen alone.

Mount and Blade Warband. There is no comparable experience. Thinking combing Total War into EU, and actually allowing you to fight in the battles. Add on an extensive online component and great community.

Vanquish. God Hand Meets Gears. Extremely slick and fast gameplay, with ball breaking difficult.

Outland. The Metroid game people been wanting that no one played.

Killing Floor. Honestly, it going to PS4 has been the most publicity this game ever received. A Horde game that understands the importance of shooting.

Path of Exile. For those who wanted Diablo II all along.

Dark Messiah. The single player experience is fantastic. Rope Bow.

Or as a few have been demostrating, From Software prior to Demon's Soul. Armoured Core, Lost Kingdoms, Otogi, A.C.E., Metal Wolf Chaos, and several more games. All with Niche followings.

I've played both and love them both but do agree. PC version is better. In fact I'd go as far as to suggest the Anniversary Edition. PS2 version suffered from being a port that was not done by Bungie. It was actually done by Rockstar Canada which was later renamed to Rockstar Toronto. As a result it didn't run as smooth and the controls were a bit clunky. Still fun though.

Yes it's an rts disguised as an action game, but it's an AWESOME rts disguised as an action game. Play it especially if you're a fan of hard rock/heavy metal.

PS. The performances in it are magnificant.

Anachronox. If you can ignore the fact that it's basically half a game, it's an amazing half of a Western-developed JRPG. Amazing game.

The Snowblind games (Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance, Champions of Norrath, etc.) In the lull between Diablo 2 and Torchlight these were about the games of their genre, and they were beautiful, solid, well-developed efforts. BG:DA was IMO of the biggest graphical leaps forward on a game console, more so than other PS2 games of its time.

Twisted Metal Black

Is this under-appreciated? I had it as one of the ten best games of that generation.

Morrowind.

Console bros only bring up Oblivion and Skyrim but Morrowind GOTY Edition on the fatty Xbox is a phenomenal game that got no buzz.

Plotwise it wouldnt make much sense.
Destruction is destroyed and the remains of God of Harmony were destroyed and the God of Creation is the one who created the elements so fighting him or her would be pointless as he is the one that creates balance.

Twisted Metal in General is. It has never gotten a lot of respect. Usually doesn't sell so great either which is such a shame because the franchise really is amazing. I fear we'll never see it again though after the way Sony screwed the PS3 Twisted metal game over with the broken servers and never getting them fixed. Them they took down the servers which hosted custom skins so if you had a custom skin and didn't have it saved on your console due to losing the save or other stuff, you can't even play online anymore because it can't load your skin. Hence you can't connect to the servers for the game.

E.V.O. The Search for Eden
Though grindy at times, a fun and unique action-RPG where you evolve as different creatures through prehistory, from early sealife to dinosaurs to cavemen

BattleTanx: Global Assault
Fantastic multiplayer game on a system renown for a killer library of multiplayer games

Metal Arms Glitch In The System.

The real tragedy of Star Craft Ghost never coming out is that the studio that made Metal Arms was absorbed by Blizzard to finish Ghost, but then that was the end of it.

Morrowind.

I think Morrowind received its due credit on Xbox.

It went Platinum, had a GotY version which included both of the PC expansions (unheard of in the 6th Gen), and then went Platinum again. I wouldn't consider it a hidden gem.

I'm a ridiculous fan of Snowblind, they made some of the best games that generation and it seems like they're barely even remembered for it. I bought Anachronox years ago but never played it, I should really give it a shot already, it looked amaaaaazing.

Damn it warms my heart to see someone else loved BattleTanx. Played a ton of that on my N64.

They could always reboot it, or make a spiritual successor.

High five to the folks who said Second Sight! Adored that game. Managed to grab it again on steam a few years back as well.

I need to play some of these games by the sounds of it!

Yep easily this. One of the best games from that gen.

Made by the team that make ace combat right?

Actually, I don't know the answer to that...
Maybe you can tell me?

Producer: Hirofumi Kami
Director: Masafumi Shibano
Scenario Director: Masahide Kito
Art Director: Masataka Shimono
Sound Director: Yoshihito Yano
Program Manager: Kazushige Watanabe

Edit: From what I can tell, the staff primarily has ties to Soul Calibur, Tekken, Ridge Racer, and Time Crisis, though Masahide Kito worked on Ace Combat 5, and Masataka Shimono worked on Assault Horizon. I'm unsure of the portfolios of those working under them.

Excite_Truck_Coverart.png

Excite Truck - sold a bit during the Wii launch, but sure as hell doesn't get enough love as one of the most fun arcade racers during last gen.
I was pleasantly surprised that the game got coverage in the new Smash Bros. Don't remember if there was anything in Brawl, might have been, but at least there's one song in Smash for Wii U (not sure if there's anything else as I've barely touched the game so far).

I 100%'d Exite Truck on Wii and it was tons of fun, also adding your own music was a great option. Racing through the tracks headbanging to songs like Battery or No Remorse \m/

Splatterhouse Wanpakku Grafitti. Easily one of the coolest 8-bit games and definitely the highlight of the Splatterhouse series. I'm a sucker for combining cute and scary, so take my recommendation with a grain of salt. But if that's your cup of tea too, it simply can't be missed.

Jordan Mechner's brilliant THE LAST EXPRESS

Broderbund folded as the game was finishing up, and this hugely ambitious and expensive project was dropped on store shelves with little to no marketing. It went out of print and for years was hard to get your hands on. Mechner's magnum opus was dead in the water before it got a chance.

This is one of the most sophisticated stories ever told in a game, utilizing a real-time approach to it's storytelling that is still totally unique. For people who say that games can't equal the subtle storytelling of cinema or the novel, this is the game to make them sit down and play.

I've been evangelising for this game for years, and thankfully it is now available on GoG, IOS, and Android. I still hope that more and more people will discover this game.

Valiant Hearts. Yeah, it's still new, but it's great and went completely under the radar that Child of Light stole and it'll be a game that most people will have never heard of in a year.

Outland's another good choice. Fantastic game that no one played.

Might have to check it out. I loved Mechner's Karateka and Prince of Persia on the Atari ST computer back in the day.
