Hilariously overpowered RPG party members

Oh man some of them are already taken but Orlandeau seems to be the best answer.

I also think that Riki (Xenoblade) if you use him right can be a better thank than Reyn...

Yukiko in Persona 4

The party members in Persona 4 are fairly well balanced... except for her. Both the strongest magic damage dealer in the game and the best healer. And her upgraded Persona isn't tied to the story like Teddie's (the second best healer), so you can get it pretty much whenever you want if you put the work into her Social Links. She's also gotten after the first dungeon, so you get her really early on. The game almost seems like it's conspiring to make you use her. Your party will essentially be the main character, Yukiko, and two other nobodies.

Lol guis look at this sword I found!

Citan didn't need to be anymore broken, but Square clearly didn't agree.
So they broke him to the extreme.
That's Jin from Xenosaga in that picture, actually. Description of Citan in Xenogears is still valid, though.

Came in here expecting Orlandu/T.G Cid. Was not disappointed.

These two were pretty badass as well.

Opera gets Healing Star, which when fully powered up makes her good enough to kick Rena out of your party. Plus Alpha on One, which did 5 hits and was very spam-able.

Bowman can just spam the shit out of Poison/Explosion pills and mindlessly steamroller everything.

Along with Chisato, I very much agree. When I played the game as a kid, i somehow never played as any of the OP characters. Revisiting the game though, my god did they just shit on any sort of difficulty that game had to offer.

As far as my choice goes...

i can't find the excerpt, but before a few patches boone was actually legitimately broken because he started with a small guns skill at level 1 of something like 120 and it skyrocketed with every level so by level 20 he'd have a small guns skill of like 800 when the game's normal cap is 100 for everyone else. the same bug for other companions actually forced their stats and skills to be reset to first level values, meaning that while everyone else was a useless piece of shit, boone was pretty much an unstoppable killing machine

so he could have all his body parts crippled, be mid-jump or falling and still be able to headshot an enemy miles away with a critical hit 100% of the time, doing enough damage to kill it like ten times over

even after they fixed this, it turns out that boone is still pretty much an unstoppable killing machine

Just play the game solo.

I'm playing New Vegas for the first time and yeah, he is ridiculous. I even installed a mod that makes him weaker, and he was still too much. So I ended up installing another mod that lets you change a companion's default weapon, and I gave him a weaker gun. Now he's balanced.

xenoblade-melia-concept-artwork-1.png

When you get the hand of her.

I think this thread is about AI party members, and in that case Melia is actually really weak. Her AI is terrible and doesn't use her attacks correctly. Melia is only good when you control her. Dunban, on the other hand...

Boon from Fallout NV, dude just flat out stole all my kills. He may a well have been the fucking main character.

*sobs*

He's still my bro

I can think of a few obvious ones so I'll start with someone less obvious:

Quina Quen from Final Fantasy IX. So many people wrote him/her off as a joke character like Cait Sith.

And you didn't even mention Quina's most game breaking ability, Limit Glove which can be had on the 1st disc. You can take her into a battle with 1 HP, and she will hit for 9,999 damage. You can take on lvl 60 Grand Dragons while the rest of your party are level 10.

There's another glitch (don't know if they fixed it or not) where his Perception Bonus would stack indefinitely if you kept switching equipment around if he had his beret on. And then if you give him the Gobi Campaign Rifle, you basically won't need to attack anything yourself for the rest of the game.

In Golden she gets Mind Charge.
She also picks up Amrita much, much, much sooner than Teddie. Since it's S.link based.

Kanji's Power Charge is where it's at though.

The majority of the examples in this thread have been about player-controlled characters, including the OP (where AI party members don't factor in at all).

Did I miss it, or Alicia Melchiott is still missing after 3 pages?

Edit, OK, missed at least a mention where its name was not written... I don't expect that saying that a character is overpowered at full level is a spoiler... ?

VC_Alicia_Melchiott.png

You can't do more overpowered than this... Once fully leveled-up, she's totally unkillable, and can finish the game by herself.

I remember moving her to stand in the middle of the enemy base, sustaining heavy fire. Enemies killed themselves (all but one, obviously) just with lost bullets and she was barely hurt.

Claude/Bowman/Opera/Chisato was the ultimate team, easily.

I especially love Bowman because so many people wrote him off at first. I remember the first FAQ on GameFAQs for SO2 basically called him the worst character in the game. There was one gimmick poster on the GameFAQs boards whose whole shtick was to make fun of Bowman.

It wasn't until probably 1-2 years after the game came out that the SO2 "community" started to accept that Bowman kicks ass.

As far as my choice goes...

"Blah blah blah TITLE WAVE!"

Holy crap I completely forgot about this. Such a broken spell. I remember getting into fights with (I think) 8 of those blue buffalo-looking enemies and stun locking them to death for ridiculous Grade farming.

Can anyone explain why Citan is OP? My interest is piqued.

He's arguably the best character in the first half of the game where he fights bare-handed. In the second half of the game he switches to using swords, which give him a massive attack boost.

So ends up being BY FAR the strongest character attack-wise, in addition to having the second highest speed in the game. And he has some decent healing abilities as well.

Not really a party member but a summonable help:

black-iron-tarkus-large.jpg

Black Iron Tarkus!

This guy is so overpowered he can take out the Iron Golem boss all by himself! In a game were you're supposed to sweat and suffer through each boss this guy makes the boss fight hilariously easy. You can just watch him smacking the golem alone.

My exact team and I remember all of that Gamefaqs stuff from back in the day. I remember me and another guy being super Bowman fans and championing him like crazy. That was a fun board.

Bowman is also one of my all time favorite video game characters

I thought I remember reading that it was pointless trying to make him into anything worthwhile...

you crazy...

Donnel in "warrior" is awesome.
And if you reset him, keep the "counter" ability and go Mercenary/Hero he can wipe maps by himself.

of course, a lot of FE:A can do this if you know what you're doing, but Donnel is totally broken.

Donnel from Fire emblem awakening

I couldn't save him :(

But I didn't think it'd be worth it. Usually they aren't.

feedlevel2_zps1fd5f09b.jpg

Not really a party member, but this guy from nino kuni.

Where do I find me one of these my fine sir? Looks like it may come in handy if I ever decide to truly finish the game. (I'm at the last last last boss).

My answer would be Seth from FE: Sacred Stones. Or that one on the GBA just incase I got the name wrong. I would just send the dude off alone as if he was his own separate team. He was better than Frederick who can get bodied later on in Awakening, and he had no buddy system to rely on unlike Fred...

240px-Boone.png

Oh yeah. I like Boone as a companion character and his quest but the guy was crazy strong. Boone to me was like Sam to Frodo: the real hero of the story.

I thought the topic was for characters that are by themselves broken (like Orlandu or TG Cid) instead of exploits from the mechanics of the game (like Calculators or Zell from FFVIII). I think that the second don't count in this topic.

He gets good pretty fast, doesn't need an exorbitant amount of baby'ing. It's just that you really don't need him and the game is perfectly beatable without him, even though he's a monster after promotion.

P4-Yoshitsune.png

Yoshitsune from Persona 4 Golden.

You literally don't any other Persona. This guy can straight up one hit kill almost anything. Especially when you buff yourself. He also has the best resistance and Nuls in the game. If you add some Nul abilities to his missing ones too, he is virtually a God.

Also....HASSOU TOBI! Yoshitsune best and most broken Attack.

Calculators from Final Fantasy Tactics. Even more if you learn all the skills and put them in a Wizard.

Calculator.jpg

And even more if you have a Mime or two in your party to mimic every calculated spell.

And even more if you have an item to absorb Holy, such as Excalibur (which T.G. Cid incidentally comes equipped with). Then you can heal your party at the same time you damage the enemy (and Holy is the most powerful attack spell that can be calculated).

Ahh good times.

Wow, I can't believe that I forgot Rita. So overkill her Tidal Wave.

"Oh hey! You're looking a little down in HP there. Need a pick me up? Okay, skip this next turn."

Full HP for all characters
All Dead Characters Revived
All Negative Status Ailments removed
All Characters get Regen

"I'll be ready to do it again in 3 turns. Take your time!"

In ship battles.

"HEY! You want full SP so you can just start dumping moonstone cannons in the second turn? DONE!"

Paired with her:

"I see you took a little damage during this ship battle. There, all gone. Full health. For next to no cost"

I'll be a little off the wall here and talk about Yuri from the Shadow Hearts games (specifically SH2, but I'll get to that in a moment), and fits in the whole "main character is overpowered".

123894750016.jpeg

Here's what makes him unique, super powerful, and versatile:

His demon fusions.

See, Yuri's special ability is that he can transform himself into a demon that represents an element in both Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts 2. While everyone in Shadow Hearts 1 gets their own unique spells/skills corresponding to a single (sometimes two) elements, Yuri eventually gets access to all elements and pretty much all abilities by the end of the game. Throw in two non-elemental fusions, both of which outclass the others in pure strength, add in a mind's eye (x2 damage at the cost of not being able to see the hit spots on the judgement ring) and Yuri is pretty much an unstoppable badass at the end of Shadow Hearts.

But he gets even more powerful in Shadow Hearts 2. Why? Well, in SH1 he was relegated to being able to only equip up to 3 different Demon forms so you only had access to 3 elements at one time on him, and the Fusion cost a heft amount of SP (basically the amount of turns you could do in battle before going berserk). In SH2, Yuri can transform into any of the elemental Demons in battle without having to equip them, and the Fusion cost of SP was greatly decreased.

But that's still not what makes him overpowered. Specifically one element gets an overpowered skill that makes Yuri an unstoppable Boss killing machine:

19-2dhhgjq.jpg

This badass motherfucker gets a skill called Energy Charge, well the Fire element second form gets it (which can be obtained pretty early on), but the third form boosts its power a little bit more. Energy Charge stores a turn for Yuri in his Fire form, and stores anywhere between 1.25-1.5x damage. Fides, the third form and pictured, can get that up to 1.8x damage. Stack elemental weapon spells of the boss' weakness on Fides, add in the Rage spell (up to roughly 40% more damage), throw in a Mind's Eye, and Energy Charge at 1.8x and Yuri can pretty much 1 to 2 hit KO any boss in the game. The final boss of the game has 10k health and in conjunction with all of those buffs on top of using a Eternal Key, I did 38k damage to the final boss.

I thought the topic was for characters that are by themselves broken (like Orlandu or TG Cid) instead of exploits from the mechanics of the game (like Calculators or Zell from FFVIII). I think that the second don't count in this topic.

I'm cool with either as long as it's working within the rules of the game (i.e. not exploiting glitches/bugs).

I agree with a number of these... I will add one that hasn't been mentioned from a game most people likely haven't played.

Miss Viola from Eternal Sonata

When I first got her I thought she sucked.... later when I was forced to play her I discovered not only was I wrong, she became my main for the rest of the game. What changed? The discovery that her damage is based on how far away from the enemy you are when you attack.... so if you do long range attacks you do absolutely crazy amounts of damage much higher than the main fighters.... and to top it off she had some healing moves as well. Frederick is also quite a bit more powerful than the other characters in the game, but viola could still easily take him out one on one.
