HIMYM spin-off "How I Met Your Father" is real.

The obvious way to do this and make it feel 1% less superfluous is to make the MOTHER of the current show the one telling the story of how she met Ted, thus making it a halfway relevant prequel of sorts that could produce some mildly entertaining storylines (I'm thinking how she got the yellow umbrella, etc).

And they're apparently not even doing that.

I shall watch...one episode...Why not have it be about the current mother looking for Ted. why have another group of people who are going to be mirrors of the current cast?
No don't you see this is great! It's completely unrelated so we can just ignore it and everything will be great. If it was about Ted's wife then we'd actually feel compelled to watch it.

They hold onto the fact that this has worked for very few shows. "But this could be it!"

Worked for Grey's Anatomy -> Private Practice, I guess. They need to change the name, completely. The ones that worked were when people didn't know they were spinoffs.

The show is really nothing special. Without the cast, there's really not much appeal. Kind of like That 70's Show / That 80's Show type of deal.

Hey does anyone remember Joey?
That ended up great!

There's this and the inevitable spinoff centered around Marshall being a judge and the comedic situations he gets into with his abusive wife. Marshall Law.

That's what I thought it was. What's the point of doing a spin-off if you're basically just doing a new show?

The only thing that will be more facepalm-y than this announcement will be when they unveil the new characters as gender swapped versions of the existing ones.

As someone else has already stated, Frasier and Cheers is this working.
Those were very different shows, though. This sounds like "People who hang out at Cheers on a different shift." or "Other Bostonians hanging out at another local bar."

Fool the old show's audience into giving it a chance.
