Hindsight is 20/20: Metal Gear Solid V

I loved it. I really REALLY enjoyed the gameplay. I loved the feeling of being a badass that single handedly took down an entire base of enemies with stealth. I loved snipe tranquilizing enemies from afar. I loved fulton-ing people and objects to collect at base (I would love a game that expanded on this concept). I loved the difficulty as the enemies adapt, forcing you to try different things.

It's just the forced FOB invasion bullshit and having to pay real money for "insurance" just soured the whole experience.

No, if you watch the whole featurette, it was a closing chapter that wrapped-up the story arc/narrative for the remaining characters in the game that weren't covered in the existing ending. It didn't have anything to do with the multiplayer component.
L

But that's not the ending of the main story.

It's a wrap up for a minor sub plot.

As a sandbox infiltration-action game disconnected from any kind of overall structure, it's one of the best in the biz. Super tight controls, lots of fun to knock dudes out and blow stuff up.

As a full Metal Gear product, I feel only Ground Zeroes lives up to the standard.

Great gameplay(that Ghost Recon came along and made look less spectacular)
Worst story(the reason I play Metal Gear)

Screw Metal Gear Solid V.
Biggest disappointment of all time.

A good game which is unplayable because of bad editing. Parts that shouldn't even be there repeat and the good parts are badly paced apart. I don't think Kojima was doing any favours to Konami with this one.

Ghost Recon that good in this front huh? Maybe I should check it out.

I played the beta and felt the controls feel way less tight than something like MGSV did

It's really not

I don't get that comparsion, they're not even close in terms of quality. Sniper Elite 4 would be a better option, and even that's still miles away from V's gameplay.

In 007 Skyfall, rogue agent Raoul Silva tried to tempt James Bond into joining him with the prospect of having the freedom to plan and go off on his own secret missions. With Metal Gear Solid V, Hideo Kojima gave players the opportunity to do just that.

It's possibly the best open world action game ever made and the most successful take on dynamic emergent gameplay for a single player experience. The gameplay loop of completing missions to expand your base and expanding your base to open up your gameplay options is addicting, and gets taken to an amazing post-game loop with FOB invasions, events, and story challenges. Chapter 2 suggests Konami would have just kept the ball rolling with ongoing episodes releasing periodically.

It's a shame that they never did that because with the base game alone, I have put more time into MGSV's open world than I have in Bethesda's Morrowind or Skyrim. Unfortunately, I can't bring myself to play anymore because at this point, I've done it all a million times. It was an incredible ride while it lasted, though.

I actually feel like people settle into trashing Western third party games after a few months, but I'm pretty sure many of us knew MGSV was problem in just weeks

Dragon Age Inquisition went from GAF top 5 games of 2014 in the GOTY thread, to getting mostly critiqued and shit on after a few months

One of the best games of 2015, but kind of a nightmare to replay. You just want to get to the good stuff, but it's alarmingly, excessively padded out. Still, when it's good, it's damn good.

Biggest disappointment for me this generation. I didn't like the open world format. It was empty and the missions were repetitive. It's a shame because I even loved MGS4.

I still feel very positive about it. It played like a stealth character action game. I found tons of enjoyment from tackling each mission in several styles focusing on speed, stealth, or overall challenge (infiltrating with the water gun was great) The story is full of bizarre missteps (The jeep ride) and otherwise lame plot points (Pretty much everything to do with Quiet) but I found that the strong elements really pushed through for me. I had an unusually extreme emotional reaction to the quarantine mission on motherbase. I had to set my controller down for a minute because of how overwhelmed I was by arriving in the basement room where the peace walker theme was playing. I'm not yet entirely sure why my reaction was much stronger than most people's but whether it's just me (edit: being a big softie) or the game I can't wholly condemn a story that brought that out of me.

The MGS series has been one of my favourites since the release of the first, MGS2 was the driving force for me getting a PS2, and likewise MGS4 was what made a PS3 a mandatory purchase for me. That said, after the end of 4 I had come to the conclusion that while all the games have had a major impact on me, I found that in terms of how I'd personally gauge them, they were on a downward trend. MGS1 was better than 2, which was better than 3, which was better than 4. Part of that was due to the doubling down of crazy and all the twists and turns the series took, when I just really enjoyed the first for being its own self-contained thing that was still possible to take seriously at the time. The other thing is the framework for the games had been mostly the same for the four games, but with layerings of multiple new mechanics and systems for each successive title, and while the additions were always something ambitious and interesting, they incrementally started making the game feel a bit more clunky every time.

That all changed with V. It felt like a clean break from everything that came before it, and it threw away all preconceived notions of what a Metal Gear Solid game should be. I find it the most playable game in the series, and as a person who only ever watched the cutscenes for the games once during my initial playthrough, I found the overblown sci-fi military soap opera stuff being played down considerably was refreshing.

V is still what I'd consider to be the best of the Solid games, and it's only gotten even better with the mods that have come out for it.

I -- I think it's amazing? I missed the shift in mob mentality on this one somehow.

SPOILERS THROUGHOUT

Stunningly realised and brilliant game that then just veers straight off a cliff in the second 'part'. And no, I'm never going to agree that the plot covering Eli, the parasite and the fricken Metal Gear itself was 'a minor subplot' that didn't need resolving. Come on. This isn't No Country for Old Men where you're supposed to fill in the blanks. the mere existence of any one of those things would've caused worldwide instability and was an unacceptable scenario and yet they leave and nobody gives a solitary shit for the rest of the game. Instead, ['Ending' spoilers]
you get to replay the intro
. What fun.

The story was a little disappointing though I still feel like it made some valuable additions to the lore.

Gameplay was A+.

I like it, currently playing it and only at episode 10 or so. The open world and mission rankings generally make me have 2 separate playstyles. When not on a mission I generally charge into bases and knock everyone unconscious and kidnap the people I can use and kill the rest, and learn the ley of the land. On missions I am in super stealth no-kill mode on my S-rank run, and on reruns I do my usual thing.

My main complaint is the timers of research and development that don't continue when the game is turned off/suspended.

The worst 9/10 I've ever played. Gameplay wise it's amazing with nitpicks but none of it matters when the core of what I hoped metal gear solid would be isn't there. It also doesn't help when you patch a game to be more unplayable so people would depend on microtransactions.

It lacked everything that I loved about the previous games. Easily the weakest in the series for me,I didn't even bother to finish it.

Incredibly awesome controls and gunplay.

Mediocre mission design (repetitive, nothing really stood out).

Disappointing story and character development. Loads of potential squandered.

Disappointing lack of terrain to explore. Desert or Africa, really needed one more area with snow or some other terrain type. Also barely used the awesome jungle area.

Still a fantastic game to play. Another year or so and it could have been GOAT material, shame it happened like it did.

Had a much better time getting the plat in ground zeroes. I gave up on MGSV pretty quick.

I expect BOTW threads to read alot like this 2 years from now... That being said I enjoyed mgsv for what it was but tbf i didnt have to pay for it.. If i had bought it day one i might have been more critical.

One of the most engaging and fun games I've ever played. Sure it's not perfect, but the game play and moment to moment action practically are perfect.

An incredible half a game. It has the best gameplay in the series, which is the only reason I'm considering getting Survive.

I really don't understand how people can think MGS4's story is anything other than utter garbage let alone better than MGSV's.

Best MGS game after MGS1 in my eyes. Sure the story is weak but MGS story has always been a joke to me so it didn't bother me.

Fantastic gameplay, one of the best I've played. But the plot is an utter shit storm (natural, I guess, following on from Peace Walker) and I just don't feel like I'd ever replay it like I do with 1 through 4. Mostly because I'll never get an ending for this.

Ground Zeroes was ace though. I said it then, and I'll say it now.
