Hispanic Restaurant to host "White appreciation" day.

This is more of a promotion to increase and solidify their white clientele then to actually show appreciation to the poor, underrepresented white people.

In all honesty if I was going to a Mexican restaurant and saw nothing but white people, I would leave because I would know it wasn't authentic. That's my litmus test for ethnic restaurants. I do the same for Chinese, Japanese, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Afghani, etc restaurants. If the majority clientele is not of the ethnicity of the restaurant then they aren't authentic and most likely serve crap.

But the restaurant is called RubbinButtz BBQ...

See there's your problem. Studies showed that Black people, at least when asked their preferred term, largely preferred the term black over African American. White people I didn't see.

As to hispanics/latinos, I think it was largely a 50/50 split.

I don't think it's 50/50. Hispanic is mainly reserved for white people from Spanish speaking countries. The term itself is derived from the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. Latino is mainly for everyone else from Spanish speaking countries, except for Black people from Spanish speaking countries, who exist in racial limbo in today's America.

Examples: Charlie Sheen is Hispanic, Cezar Chavez was Latino, Andy Garcia is Hispanic, Edward James Olmos is Latino, etc.

I do know non-white latinos who refer to themselves as "hispano" but I think that's part of the general confusion about the terminology. Honestly the entire thing is stupid, self-contradictory, and premised on Spanish conquistadors and their descendants' need to differentiate themselves.

This is either very hipster-y or dismissive. What's to say tourists aren't visiting a famous restaurant that happens to be traditional in its serving?

It's not actually, you're right.

Hispanic is apparently preferred in a 2 to 1 margin.

Article points out that, as I expected, saying you're from X country is more popular with latinos

We also have a "Men's day", does the history mean we shouldn't have one?
I appreciate the gesture, I don't think we need one, but there is nothing wrong with it. People speaking their mind against it should seriously reflect.

these idiots should turn in their ethnicity card. either they aim to generate revenue through controversy, or these idiots really want to suck up to the white population in their area and be "one of the good ones" .

Or you know... Maybe these hispanic owners are just racist against black people.

I didn't realize there was an ethnicity card. How do I get one?

Also if it wasn't for the fact that they are unlikely to give discounts to other races I'd disagree with this. If they just gave the discount to everybody and just white people stuff in the restaurant it wouldn't be as big of a deal.

Straw man. As others have said the reason why we have those others months is because of a lack of representation for those groups traditionally,Which is something whites have not suffered from.

Well no, there IS something wrong with it. At best it's just trying to attract white clientele who think it unfair to not have their own day, at worst it's an affirmation of the ignorance behind the idea of asking for something like that. Wanting a white history month for instance is one of the best ways to describe white privilege - they only want it because they don't understand that history in the US is white.

I've never even seen restaurants do anything for the history months, that comment they made makes no sense.

This is just an easy ploy for attention.

It's like a kid with rich parents who can have any toys they want throwing a tantrum because a poor kid got a toy that they don't have.

I'm having a hard time getting upset about some middle of nowhere, no-name restaurant offering a 10% discount to white people for one day. Their views may be misguided but it's such an incredibly trivial thing—mind boggling that it's national news, really; perhaps that's what they wanted.

It's nice to be appreciated. I try so hard to maintain my White-ness and it's rare that anyone thanks me for the effort. You're welcome non-White America!

but if it's a hit and they start doing it annually?

you don't think other mom n pop restaurants would try it?

The national attention the restaurant is getting over it might inspire a few copycats, but I really don't think it's anything to worry about. Seems like a slippery slope.

Just speaking from my experience, but in south Texas nearly everyone of mexican descent refers to themselves as Hispanic over Latino.

Having a "White Appreciation Day" isn't that bad, since like the guy mentioned, there are such things as Black History Month and Hispanic History Month.

My problem with it is the discount. I think that would be really fucked up if a black guy and a white guy were in line and the white guy was given a discount just for being white, whereas the black guy paid full price. Just give everyone the discount so there is no discrimination.

But it is pretty clear that this guy just has an agenda, and this is an easy way to draw attention to his establishment.

My head hurts. Being white isn't american. But being american is white. So why do white Americans forget about Europe where white people are mostly from.

clearly not slippery enough, I mean now prolly isn't the best time for this with all this racial injustice be brought to light around the country.

American exceptionalism might have something to do with it.

To be clear, I don't think it's ever a good time to implement these types of discounts if you're running a shop, but if it's attention they're looking for, they clearly chose a good time to do it.

I'm mexican yet I don't understand how the 'latino' and 'hispanic' stuff works in the US or for americans.

All I can say is that I find Univision, Telemundo and 'latino/hispanic' stuff in America weird as fuck.

For the same reason " Go back to Africa is an insult". Not all americans are the same to the eyes of their society.

As has been mentioned, having "White Appreciation" or "Straight Pride" completely defeats the point of having holidays celebrating minorities, because the majority doesn't need representing. Every month is white history month, every day is straight pride.

Yeah... that's not gonna end well...

what is his worst case scenario here? it goes viral and attracts a bunch of social media attention/ yelp reviews? sounds like a gofundme success story waiting to happen.

offending social media might be a valid exit strategy for a failed restaurant.

What if I told you guys that there are tons of white people who spend their entire lives discriminated against and downtrodden by society at large?

It's time for a ginger appreciation month.

If those are the criteria then where is geek appreciation week?

It's a good idea to start early so when whites are a minority-majority they have an estabilished motif already, avoiding all the party planning details.

Fucking love red heads. You guys don't know how rare you are.
