Wow, this is insane. I'm just getting caught up after all the World Cup madness.

The match was suspended? Good lord!

"In a courtside TV interview, Isner said: "Nothing like this will ever happen again. Ever.""

I turned it on this morning and thought there was an error with the scorecard. Then the commentators started talking about it and I was like :O :O :O

just got home. were there any breaks in the 5th set?

I started watching at 27 games each, and apart from the 60 seconds or so they got to sit down between each game, the only break I saw was about 15 minutes before the match was suspended, when one of the players (I forgot which) had to go to the toilet. They were back and playing within 3 minutes though.

Anyway, like I said, I started watching from the 27-27 mark, and I sat there and watched until they called it a night. I'll be watching tomorrow as well. I'm not all that into tennis, but this is absolutely incredible stuff. Like one of the commentators said, words that might normally seem hyperbole take on a whole new meaning when applied to this match. One set alone has broken loads of records, and has propelled the sport into the spotlight, bringing it to the attention of many people who otherwise don't care much for tennis. The fact that ESPN has got this listed above the US win in today's world cup match only proves that, although I do think it's unfortunate that the world cup is still going to take a way a lot of the impact this match should have.

It's simply amazing how both players were able to keep at it for so long. Isner definitely looked the worse of the two at the end, but he was still playing on the same level as Mahut all throughout, and although there were points where both players were clearly dead on their feet, there were times when they would jump about like madmen and dive halfway across the court to reach the ball. After playing for 7 hours straight in scorching hot weather, that's unbelievable.

Even though the spectators are probably burnt to a crisp by now, I envy them so much. To witness that game in person would be something you'd remember for the rest of your life. I can certainly understand why they were booing when they were denied the chance to see it's conclusion.

Couldn't get single reply from anybody yesterday in the thread before the match when I said it would be a good one and people should watch. Now it is a 900 post thread. Fucking miracles.

Hopefully this day can garner more interest for tennis and soccer in the USA.

Oh yeah, what's really funny is that one of the commentators said that this was his very first commentary ever. He was apparently given an uneventful match to "cut his teeth on". :lol

The stats kept piling up. The two men had clocked up more games than Serena Williams had in winning the entire championship last year.

The more stats that come out about this match the funnier it gets.

he did this twice the last hour.
Yes he did :lol That was amazing

I once did tis for the lulz on a tennis court... I actually flung my racket, it hit the ball at just the right angle and it went over :lol I was keeling over from laughter, and so was my partner, so neither me or my partner got the ball in time.

4.05pm: The Isner-Mahut battle is a bizarre mix of the gripping and the deadly dull. It's tennis's equivalent of Waiting For Godot, in which two lowly journeymen comedians are forced to remain on an outside court until hell freezes over and the sun falls from the sky. Isner and Mahut are dying a thousand deaths out there on Court 18 and yet nobody cares, because they're watching the football. So the players stand out on their baseline and belt aces past each-other in a fifth set that has already crawled past two hours. They are now tied at 18-games apiece.

On and on they go. Soon they will sprout beards and their hair will grow down their backs, and their tennis whites will yellow and then rot off their bodies. And still they will stand out there on Court 18, belting aces and listening as the umpire calls the score. Finally, I suppose, one of them will die.

Perfect :lol :lol

God, I can just imagine the people who bet serious money on this match having a nervous breakdown now :lol

Haha, I said that at about the 35-35 mark. :lol

Oh, according to this site, the match won't resume until 3.30pm GMT tomorrow at the earliest, so that should mean more people will be able to watch it.

I'm really curious to see how Isner and Mahut look tomorrow. Some people have said that they might actually be even worse for wear, as they could have suffered ligament damage or the like from over-exertion (some of the commentators were speculating that this match could have set their careers back by months). At the very least, the exhaustion from today will have turned into serious aches and pains by tomorrow. I don't think any amount of ice baths or massages will change that.
