uh, hi gaf.

My car just died.

I live in Los Angeles. You need a car.

Any thoughts? I'm mainly just a commuter, actually hate driving, like gas mileage, being cheap and auxiliary ins for ipods. Been driving a toyota tercel for the last 8 years.

Any opinions?

Why buy something new right now? Get a used Fit or Versa and ride out the economy car for another 8 years and then we should all be driving cars that run 100 miles on a charge with no gas. :) Worth the wait. :P

There are so many used hondas with less than 100k miles on it (they go 250+, you know?) that you really don't have an excuse.

Used Fit ain't no bargain.

OP, check out new Versa, new Mazda 3 and if you're set on the Fit or Yaris, and ever need to move anything (Bike, chair) get the Fit.

MAZDA AGE! Only car brand named after Zoroastrian deity. Instant win.

The terrible Live arcade game based on the Yaris makes me suggest you get a Fit automatically.

My friend also has a Fit and seems to like it.

get a used Honda Fit, not new.

Even if its not much of a steal compared to a new you won't be hit with high insurance premiums. Trust me.

Do not get a Mazda or Nissan Versa.

Both get worse gas mileage than the Fit or Yaris if that is your main concern.

Yes the Mazda3 drives very nice but its not very fuel efficient for its class and reliability is a factor since they pick into some of the same parts bins as Ford does

Honda dealers want way too much for their cars these days. The Yaris is a total bore though, you would expect a cheap car like that to be boring, but the Honda Fit is like a Miata in comparison.

The '09 Honda Fit is nice, but the fit sport with nav came to a bit over $22,000.00 after taxes.

dont get the nav.. and bargain better.. my girlfriend just got the fit sport for much less than that.

I love my yaris to death and so do all my friends and family. It has gotten quite popular. I can't say enough good things about it after 18 months of ownership.

What?! That number should be way lower. At that range you might as well be getting a Civic, maybe even a very low-end Accord.

you can't put a price on that kind of style

The Yaris is surprisingly good for small car. I had one for a work car and put a shitload of miles on it in a very short time and not a single thing broke.

how high were the chiropractor bills?

I beat the hell out of the Yaris I had in South Africa for two months. Solid car.

Fit is more versatile though. Love the magic seat.

Between the two, I'd go with the Fit.

If you want a commuter with ipod aux, just go with the Yaris hatch. There's absolutely no reason to spend the extra money for the higher end Yaris.
There's no way to change the integrated head unit without buying a new centerpiece and the one that comes stock isn't that great. You'd be best just paying less for the car itself and buying a completely new audio system.

eh, how about neither?! So tiny! I have a base Nissan Sentra that I love. Dad negotiated the price to be around $15,000. Serves me about 32 mpg, drives so smooth. I <3 it and would get another one in a heartbeat.

Get a versa, I drove one for 2 years its fantastic little car but has lots of room inside.

A Yaris is more ugly but Toyota is better, I'd try to get a Corolla it's not that much more man......I've had a civic and a camry, the civic was a pain the camry was a champ...toyota rules

I can vouch for this post. Toyotas are work horses. I still have my 1992 Toyota MR2. I treat that thing like shit and use it heavily as my A to Ber and it has NEVER had a major problem ever in the nine (9) years that I've owned it. And it was already old as hell when I bought it.

It's too bad that the Scion xA was discontinued, it seemed like a neat little car. I hate the xD that replaced it, it looks way too big and bulky.

I have a Yaris as well and absolutely love it. We put a decent # of km over the past 7 months (around 13k) and no problems at all. The mileage is fairly good and no visits to a chiropractor yet ;P

That said, the Fit is a nicer car (it was about 3k more than the Yaris for the same features so it came out of the running)

Short Answer
If you enjoy driving and/or want practicality, the Fit. If you want comfort, Yaris.

Long Answer

Honda Fit
-------------
The automotive press unanimously loves this little car. It has sporty dynamics with sharp steering, little body roll and good road feedback. If you like driving for the sake of driving at all, the Fit will give you a way more involving ride than the Yaris (or any Toyota really).

In addition, it's very efficient with its space. It's a tiny car, but it offers a lot of storage configurations with its "Magic Seat". You can fold the rear seat vertically so the bench goes up. You can fold the rear seat horizontally flat. You can split it so that you have part of the rear seat completely flat, and part of it upright for seating. It just gives you a lot of options to carry stuff.

Downsides? My brother owns one and these are his complaints:
- No arm rest.
- Stiff suspension, so road irregularities (potholes, uneven pavement) will be felt.
- Like most Hondas, it lacks low-end torque (peaks at 4800 RPM), so in order to get throttle response, you kinda have to drive it like you're angry - but keep in mind that's also why some people love it.

Toyota Yaris
-------------
People definitely think it's a better car than its predecessor, the Echo, but there's some peculiarities about it. First of all, the sedan and hatchback models were designed by different teams. The actual mechanicals are the same, but exterior and interior design are specific to either model so if you were checking one out, I'd suggest looking at both.

If you just want an A-to-B car, the Yaris will provide comfortable transportation. It's no-frills, and the floaty suspension with soak up bumps pretty well. It's also a bit more affordable than the Fit.

Drawbacks though...
- Center mounted gauges. They stuck the speedometer and tachometer in the middle of the car so there's nothing in front of the driver. I guess one can get used to it, but for many of us who are used to having all the gauges on the driver's side, it is a negative and perhaps worse for safety?
- The floaty suspension means that you are not going to be thrilled to drive it for driving's sake. It is strictly an A-to-B car like I said, and if you have any sporty pretentions, the vague steering and body roll will discourage you from taking sharp turns or playing around in the twisties.
- The dimensions are comparable or maybe even larger than the Fit, but you actually have less room for people/stuff.
--------------------------------------------------------

With both cars though, I would definitely recommend getting a manual transmission. With really small engines like these (barely over 100hp), you really need to be able to wring what you can out of it and automatics just don't give you as much flexibility. Plus... you'd be losing a gear (4 vs 5 speed) with an auto box.

I'd also add... that perhaps you hate driving because you've only driven a Tercel :P I may seem anti-Toyota, but that's only because that's what I own. I never really cared about driving with my trusty Corolla either. It works, it's comfy, it's practical. But it wasn't ever exciting. Inheriting a Miata changed all that, and now my Corolla just sits in the garage.

Actually he's in California where most Ins companies give new car discounts...

op give me your zip and Dob and I could give you an idea how much the difference in premium would be.

oh and to stay on topic... defiantly the fit its a great little car I test drove one and it took every ounce of will power I have not to buy it.

Don't forget to buy the nut-sack accessory that hangs from the back of the truck... or do those come pre-installed now?

I heard they give them free at the dealership if you show up wearing a sleeveless lynard skynard shirt haha

Suspension was fine and seats were more comfortable than my BMW (More comfortable, not better) IMO.

I must have test driven some shitty ones, because I'm pretty sure the Fit had 2X4's for shocks and a milk crate for a seat.
