What does Hotel Dusk do to separate itself from the pack? What do other adventure games do that HD doesn't?

I think coming out in the last year and not being tied down to 'oh I played that when I was 12' is a huge plus.

It also happens to be excellent with a nice visual style.

The most important thing about adventure games is they story. Everything beyond that is there to compliment that - especially puzzles. Hotel Dusk failed on many levels. Me? I'd prefer replaying Grim Fandango for 99th time instead of playing Hotel Dusk.

The genre is varied enough to support many different kinds of games within the larger adventure context. Phoenix Wright is also considered an adventure game and it's mostly about solving a mystery with case specific puzzles.

Hotel Dusk happens to be more of a story heavy adventure and it's not like its a completely alien thing, games like it have been quite common on consoles in Japan for quite sometime.

Wow. I can't believe Deku just insinuated that FFVII is the only game I have played this year. Wow.

Your love affair with cloud and that mediocre RPG is immaterial to this discussion. Stay on topic please.

Edit: And you totally misunderstood what I meant of course.

Your post does not change any thing I said. Phoenix Wright, despite being about nothing but solving mysteries, is still about nothing more than telling a story. Solving mysteries does not change this.

Hotel Dusk is no more story centric than the average adventure game, and its story still sucks.

'sucks' is subjective, which is what you don't seem to understand. You're not the first in this thread to detract from the game and I have zero problem with that.

You asked a question why people care about it and what separates it from other adventure games, it coming out this year as a new entry in an almost forgotten genre is a huge plus and many people think it's a great game as the GOTY voting should show.

I tend to misunderstand fanboys, sorry. Could you retype that in English please? Because that FFVII remark has nothing to do with Hotel Dusk.

You're the one who brought it up. I simply asked you to stay on topic because my comment was not meant to insult your FFVII love-in elsewhere, I was referring to the fact that most of GAF had their adventure gaming experiences with the Monkey Island or Myst games and simply haven't revisited the genre until HD.

I personally saw Deku's comment about "not playing it when I was 12" meant that the golden age of adventure games was in the early and mid 90's. Hotel Dusk coming out in 2007 meant that the game wasn't viewed through nostalgia.

As for the story sucking, that's totally subjective. Some people found it slow, I found it refreshing.

Edit: Bah. Deku beat me to every point. :lol

....what? You also said the characters are not likable....really? Really? Cause I mean, other people who didn't like the game had very valid complaints that I can understand (too much text, like a book, too coincidental, pop quiz at the end of each chapter, etc.) but your complaints come from left field to me.

Maybe its that you have drastically different tastes than I do. Either that, or you didn't finish the game.

That's exactly what I meant. thank you.

The story isn't any better than a decent book... but imagine reading that story painfully slowly, with text that takes forever! to appear. And then trudge through a hotel forever, knocking on doors. Give me a book any day.

I really, really tried to like this. Made it to chapter 5 or 6 or so, and had to quit.

this game was so good, but like i said in another thread, trace memory kinda put a damper on it for me. Alot of the puzzles were reused from trace memory, but i cant fault dusk for that...trace memory did NEARLY EVERYTHING possible with a ds. not to say there is nothing more to do on the ds, but shit, the puzzles were legendary
