How can I protect myself from my 360 breaking?

I have a launch 360 and its fine... but it seems like tons of other 360's are not so lucky. What can I do to prevent anything from happening, or is there a warranty I can buy so I dont get ****ed

Try to keep it away from water.

I still have my launch 360 working perfectly.

I think the number 1 thing to do to avoid it breaking is to not jinx yourself and talk about.... oh.....

J/K :)

Anyway, good ventilation for both the console and the brick are obvious, but important.

I also have a wierd thing about going back to the dashboard before turning off the console. I feel like it's better to have the console spin down the disc rather than let it spin itself down with the power off. Probably doesn't make a difference, but I'm obsessive-compulsive and do wierd stuff like this with all my consoles. I used to have to wash my hands everytime before touching my controllers.....

Don't turn it on. At the end of the generation, when the last 360 game is released, it will still be working perfectly.

Then at the end of the generation he can sell it on ebay and make enough to afford a PS3.

uh oh...

seems those manufactured in '06 have been relatively stable... so i guess you could ebay your current 360 and buy a new one :shrug

Make an altar to the xbox 360 gods and make regular sacrifices to ensure good health for your console.

The best sacrifice is one that can be deposited in my swiss bank account. I'll PM you the number, k?

Nothing, it's only a matter of time till that unit dies.

sorry guys, cant resist to suggest that you might want to ebay it as collectors edition (one of the few launch 360's still working), and with money you get from it, buy all 3 consoles?

:lol

I think extensive use is the cause of th 3 red lights.

I barely use my 360 and it never overheats. Don't leave the system turned on to take a break. Turn it off and when you do use it, be gentle navigating the dashboard and booting games

I never advocate abusing machinery, but how can someone seriously want to use a console like that? I don't think it's right or fair for a good console owner to have to baby a console so much in the hopes that it won't break before a reasonable lifespan. The only way a 360 is to survive is barely to use it?

How does one do this? Are you one of these people who caresses your 360 lovingly (and intimately) while you gently navigate her blades and whisper in her vents while you boot her?

you just have to take the 360 and, together, look into a mirror and tell it that it is good enough, smart enough, and doggone-it, people like it.

Actually, I must admit, sometimes I move to one blade in the dashboard when my 360 hasn't finished moving to the previous blade. She stutters and gets it done, but now I'm feeling kinda bad about it.

When we first met I would use the eject button to load a disk but now I just push on the tray. The other day the disk rattled in the tray because I was so harsh.

God, I'm such a prick.

that's the way it is, as simple as that.

If you have a dense game running on the machine, don't play it for more than 2 hours. Specially if there are huge bosses and lots of stuff going on. The only games you can leave running for as long as you like are XBLA games and old xbox1 games. Maybe some 360 games that aren't very ambitious. If you play oblivion, dead rising, gears, etc.. for hours non-stop and leave the console "paused" to take dinner or go to the bathroom just to come back to continue playing for 2 or 3 more hours, you are almost like summoning the 3 red lights of death.

Being gentle navigating means don't rush into things specially loading and closing XBLA games.

I think the best advice is simply making sure it's well ventilated, and kept in a clean place. Also, I think the more you move any console, the more likely a problem can be. It's best to just set it up in one place, and leave it that way.

Only a rare occasions do I ever move my consoles, and i've never had a single one break in 20 years of gaming. Not even one.

That boat gif is one of the best gifs ever created. :lol

And I think you should have a towel handy.

I can tell you right now that your launch 360 will likely die in the next year or so.

PM me when it does

Mine was a launch (relatively) system. It died just two weeks ago, after a year and 3 months of 360 goodness. I'm waiting for the repair...

Well, ever since mine broke and I repaired it with the heatgun, I believe you need to let it warm up and cool down gradually. The heatgun worked because of the shoddy low temperature solders. If you play for 6hrs and just shut the system off then its going from peak heat to rapid cooling, increasing the likelihood that a solder separation will occur again. I just let it go to dash or browse around Live for a little while.

I have no clue if this helps, but it seems logical for the reasons my 360 bricked.

If it breaks, just buy a new 360 and switch out the three lights with the green lights in the new one. :)

keep it in an area that's easy for it to get plenty of air movement. ie, not in a corner and not in a small shelf with a solid back on it.

in winter, put it near a window. it doubles as a space heater and will warm up cold air from leaky windows.

Don't leave your 360 turned off for more than 24 hours, especially after a long gaming session. Always "warm" your 360 daily at least for 30-60 minutes.
They say by doing this you can prevent "cold solder joint" problem...:)
