How could PS3 has a hard time in japan when the HD penetration is so high?

i think that they want to do things their way and forgetting what gamers want.

and letting most of the fans pissed off for no reason.

If this were anywhere near the truth, do you honestly think their system would be selling as much as it is right now? Come on, use some common sense here. The only fan they've pissed off right now is you, and that's fine. You don't have to buy their system if you don't want to. If you want to stomp your feet and protest 'OMGZ ZELDA IS A CARTOONZ!@@LOL KIDZ@' still, go for it. We all got over that the day it was released and found out how much of an awesome game it really was.

And flat out saying the Wii is simply a Gamecube is a bit ignorant. The new control scheme, online, and the fact it's the size of a DVD case is nothing new and exciting? Sure, taste is subjective, but I think you're so blinded by your Nintendo hate that you refuse to even look at anything they put out. $100 worth of hardware my ass.

Cmon man, let's not take a turn into the rediculous.

I'm serious. In a moving image (game) with proper anti-aliasing, the difference between 480p and 720p for example isn't really all that critical. Sure, you can see the difference if you are actively looking for it, but usually when people are playing a game, they are more focused on, you know, the game.

Merovingian said:
Sure. Even we forget everything and everyone else to adress a gamer like you, explain to me how the wii will be the only one giving you something new gameplay wise? Right now, it's just a quick way of experiencing a new type of control.

And with time, there will be games certainly that could only work on the wii...but the same is 100% true for the Xbox360/Ps3, those systems will be offering you gameplay that is impossible on the Wii. Assassins Creed is a quick example.

So it's not as simple as saying "Can give me something new while the 360 and Ps3 is just better graphics" which is completelly untrue.

When I said "how" I meant the controller rather than game play. The only thing that has not changed much on the ps3 or 360 is the controller, it has been refined, but it is fairly comparable to the way controllers have been for the past 10+years on consoles.

Back in the snes days that type of controller worked very well for the type of games that was on the console (2D mostly). As games have moved to 3d I have found the controller to be less of a fit for those games, with obvious exceptions.

Until with the last gen with the PS2/XBOX/GC A lot of the games I wanted to play did not work at all for me, aka fps/3rd person shooters.

I am much happier with the Wiis controls now than even PC, where I lived for a while, I am really enjoying the control methods used. They are rough at the moment, need a lot of work, but they have put the fun back into games for me. Strikers, Godfather, Zelda, Red Steel and others have brought be back to buying a game a month, something I have not done for years.

I would not exchange the Wii for the other two consoles, they do not offer me anything I want and from the Wii sales perhaps a lot of people see things as I do.

Every sales problem is a marketing problem. Sony has a marketing problem and secondary to that is an utter black hole of game selection in Japan.

Outside of Resistance, Ridge Racer and Gundam Musuo, what do they have that's even worth thinking about buying it? They don't even have a MotorStorm with online yet. :P

480p is just as "hard" to hook up as 1080i/720p

.

Not every sales problem is a marketing problem. Flat out, it's a combination of an extremely prohibitive price point and, as you say, not having a terribly good selection of games to appeal to Japanese tastes. Marketing isn't going to be able to do much with that.

give me wii play and cooking mama over mgs4 and ffxiii anyday. its all about fun fun fun.

Weird definition of fun you have there.

I find MGS4 and FFXIII a lot more fun than any of those games you mentioned.

Take that pill and shove it.

Because when people see HD televisions they see bigger and thinner televisions.

They dont see more pixels.
Agreed. My parents didn't buy an LCD TV because it was HD, they bought it because it was big, thin and could be mounted on the wall. The closest thing to an HD source they have hooked up is an HDMI DVD player than I convinced them to buy.

Cooking mama's a lot of fun, but yeah...Wii Play is uh...well. Even at ten bucks I think I'd rather go eat at Subway instead.

You guys are harsh on Wii Play. I know people who LUV laser hockey and Cow Racing.

Hasn't Japan been airing HD material longer than anyone else? I see HD versions of TV shows on torrents all the time, some dating back to 2000. So wouldn't their HD penetration figures be due to just having more programming for a longer period of time?

Of course, all this doesn't really have anything to do with video games.

It has about the same value as Wii Sports or EyeToy Play to me. It's fun with other people in short bursts, but it doesn't have a lot of value to me on its own.

Oh god, that was soo bad :(
I lol'd

Anyway, the Wii basically stole it's thunder, the console is too expensive (not neccesseraly size I believe) and it lacks games that Japanese really want nowadays. They seem to have become kind of tired of the traditional style of gaming after two Sony and jRPG dominated generations.

How could they play wii on their HDTV ?
As someone who got a Wii and an HDTV about the same time, the advance from standard 480i to widescreen 480p wasn't a jump to HD, but it also wasn't nothing.

Would someone explain to me why Monster Hunter 3 will help the PS3 when 1 and 2 only did mediocre on the PS2?

People are hoping that the insane PSP version sales will translate over to the PS3 version.

You really want to make that your logo, don't you? :)

Anyway, I love how most people try to think of most ridiculous reasons, but never mention the biggest one.
There were maybe 5 games released for PS3 in Japan, since launch, 1 of those was a big seller, 1 was a sequel in series that people stopped caring about in genre that people stopped playing, 1 was a PS2 port of a baseball game, and 2 were NFL and NBA games.

That's the reason why PS3 is sitting on such slow sales, and it will get even worse, unless they start launching new good games regularly. This week NGS will be released, it will probably do around 40k sales, and will probably push PS3 to around 15k, next week Folklore will be released, probably doing around 20-30k, and keeping PS3 at 15-20k, then we will have Mina No Golf, and that will probably sell around 200-300k, and will move PS3 to around 30k. With those released, PS3 will steadily sell 20k+ a week. And it will of course fell off, if PS3 sees another 2-3 months long drought.

You can't say that people don't care about HD, because they buy HDTVs, so it's obviously important to them.

Starchasing said:

Exactly.

The reason I have a LCD television in my living room is only because my mom wanted a flat one.

That way she finds it less intrusive in her living room.

Where is this thread about "a lot of people don't use the full HD power of their PS3 cause they don't buy the right cables and use the ones in the box" ?

It couldn't possibly be because Monster Hunter games sell well in Japan

There is no answer for this question. Sony could bundle their Bravia HDTV with PS3 and it still would not sell. You cannot read a Japanese's mind unless you are one. Didnt they went crazy over some toy pet breeding bangle called tamagochi?

if i try to say why, i will get banned. i hope Mods don't take this as troll. because i am not.

but you know what, i will try to say it and try to be gentle as much as i can. and hope Mods don't think i am trolling.

here it goes. i think Nintendo is arrogant. i think that they want to do things their way and forgetting what gamers want. and i hate this kind of companies. since the day they sold out Rare to MS and i started hating them. since the day Zelda on GC turned from the awesome looking video of Zelda space word 2K to the cartoony one.

all they cared about is what they want to do. and letting most of the fans pissed off for no reason.

and yet, they do it again. they release what is basically a GC machine. add to that a remote instead of controller. change the design of the system. rename it to Wii and sell it for 250$.

yeah they are cheaper than PS3 and Xbox 360. but both 360 and PS3 are expensive because they have advance technology inside. what does Wii have to justify the price of the console ????

i have been playing PS2/GC since 2001. its been 6 years. i am not gona spend a 250$ on a PS2 or GC with wiimote whatever you wana call it.

once they get the price done right, then i will buy the system.

i know that one person like me wouldnt even make nintendo blink seeing how amazingly they are selling. but i do find what i say is logical and right.

so. while others love their Wii and enjoy it [Mods, don't make sex out of this sentence and give me new horrible tag ] i will be playing other games on my next gen consoles.

at the end. as long as everyone is happy gamer, then that is all what counts right?

You know the thing I hate the most about this generation is that it's about what people believe. This thing is drawing lines in the sand worse than people do with religion and it's starting to get to me.

You see the problem is that I believe everything you're saying, but the other way around, with Microsoft and Sony being the arrogant ones. I'm about to go off to college, and there's no way in hell I'll be able to afford this stuff from here on out. Maybe in 4-8 years, we'll see.

The fact is, from what I'm seeing they're like a bunch of other corporations that are trying to raise the status quo because it means more money. DVD and SDTVs have reached their peak in revenue and can only go down from here as people are continually becoming fed up with stale offerings on DVD, movies that aren't even worth the $10 of admission, and cable with a majority of TV shows not worth watching. Of course this isn't the opinion of everyone, but people are slowly converting as they're getting tired of it all.

So the only thing to do next is to move on to something new, and like all things in the technology business, it means stronger, faster, higher resolution. They're trying to tie things into the PC business model which I shun because of the constant upgrade, upgrade, upgrade. If you spend say $300 every two years on a new SD card plus games, you're spending way more on your PC than a console.

So Sony has $600? and $60 dollar games? Isn't this one of the reasons people hated the N64? Blue ray discs cost how much again? And Microsoft? $400 and I have to pay extra for wifi? Also with the $60 games? And extra for online gaming? To play with strangers that I'll rarely want to randomly add to my buddy list anyway? **** that. Wanna know why they're doing all this? To start over with when DVDs came into the fold but add TVs too. Means more money for everybody. Hell no.

The Wii is more powerful than a GCN. The remote also is a very advanced piece of technology made cheap, something that Sony and Microsoft can't do. I don't even care about the games as long as they're fun, and different. I generally buy one or two fighting games, one or two racing games, one good FPS game, and then the bulk of everything else I like on consoles are action/adventure, rpg, and multiplayer based. But nowadays I doubt they even want me to leave my home for the multiplayer. They'd rather me stay at home so I can use my whole screen rather than go out and socialize. What they should be doing is making more multiplayer games that have all characters sharing the same screen at once.

I've even thought about waiting for a price drop, but that also means I have to save to buy all the games I missed, some of which may be only found on eBay by then, and because the GCN/Xbox is dead, with the PS2 hanging up its cape, I'll be without home console gaming for a year or two. Uh-uh. No no. No way at all is that acceptable.

So on Wii I have games that do what I want for a pricepoint that I want. I loved Twilight Princess (although I'll be honest and say the end fell a little bit flat for me), I've had fun with Marvel Ultimate Alliance. Everyone is on screen at once. I'm looking forward next to Alien Syndrome and Strikers Charged. I need to finally go buy Excite Truck as I was borrowing it from a friend to the point where I was halfway through Super Excite anyway. I will be buying Metroid. I'll be thanking God if Mario Galaxy makes it this year as this fall is super charged. And Brawl will be the last game I ever really need. Anything else will just be for the variety of different genres and game play options. Hell just wait until E3. I'm thinking I might actually like Soul Caliber Adventures

So yeah, this is what makes me a happy gamer. And I'm going to hate fighting like this but this is what those three did to us. Lines were drawn in the sand. Shots were fired. People are crying. And in this first year alone many of us have been banned.

And truth be told I ****in hate this. Why can't we all have both?

Some of these arguments might apply elsewhere, but Japan has had HD for a long time and I suspect a much higher percentage of Japanese people have it hooked up properly than, say, American people. I don't think it's the HDTV penetration, and I don't think it's really about the price (in Japan, at least), though it will obviously benefit from further price drops. What is the PS3's complete failure in Japan about then?

It is about a disgusting lack of games, especially games with Japanese appeal, about Final Fantasy getting pushed back, MGS getting pushed back, Square putting everything on the DS and cell phones; it is about the Nintendo craze and the PSP's relative failure and the DS's monster rise; it is about the resurgance of casual gaming, of quick portable gaming on long transits that have become part of their lives, of Nintendo's old franchises and new nongames; it is about Wii Sports and an increasingly marginalized hardcore segment split, not so lopsidedly as before, between the PS3 and 360; it is about an enormous lack of hype, about stores selling the already-discounted PS3 at reduced prices and ordering only a few due to lack of demand; it is about the general situation in Japan, about games reaching the mass market and widespread acceptance once again, about the fall of traditional gaming and a trending away towards everything the PS3 represents.

There are a lot of reasons. HD penetration is hardly going to matter at all in Japan, and while unless something drastic changes I doubt it will matter much in America or Europe either, it'll still have a noticable effect. In Japan... nothing.

If sony and ms are greedy arrogant bastards, than Nintendo is the worst. Has there been in any generation of gaming where one party came out with a marginally faster hardware after 5 years, sell you at that same price many moons back, a simple motion detection technology, cheap parts cheap to assembly, but hyped as some virtual reality made real and billl you as that, made mountain of profits at launch and not pass none of that savings to you?

You fail at maths. No wonder you enjoy fun fun fun games like brain training. Talk about drawing lines and religizealots. :)

Ahem.

Guys, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the fundamental concept of a business being a greedy arrogant bastard and getting away with it?

Sorry, but neither "creating a console that doesn't appeal to Jahaya" or "making profits" are actual definitions of "arrogant". Perfect examples of arrogance are Sony's "we could sell 5 million PS3s without any games" or "handheld competition with Nintendo is an irrelevance" statements. (Both of which ended up biting them in the ass.)
