How did Sony Announcements go from this.. To.. This?

So after that video presentation, which they tweeted out to ALL the game players/fans, you're happy with what you saw? It gave you a deeper knowledge of what they're doing with the PS5 and its games? Hard drive size was adequate? Power is equal to or better than Series X? Ray Tracing will be great on PS5? Backwards compatibility was adequate enough for you? I'm talking about what we saw... it was horrible. You're around 8 months from launch and this is ALL we have so far?!?

I don't see it being launched this year with the virus bud I'd be very surprised if both systems come out.

So they got the message wrong even though the tweet said deep dive into PS5's system architecture. This tweet was posted on every game site that reported the announcement and I'm guessing not everyone seen it so I suppose maybe a message at the start would have been better

If they though that common people know what "technical architecture" means then they dont know very well what their consumers want.

72k dislike this is embarrassing. xbox wiped the floor with them.
You beat me to it, it won't matter in terms of sales but it shows people were unhappy with the presentation to an extent.

You trying to imply that xbox has no games?
No, I find it funny, because console gamers are always talking about how it's all about the games and not graphics.
But all of a sudden, everyone is crying and being dissapointed in these next gen consoles, hardware wise.
And I'm enjoying every second of it. No TV show on earth can provide this much entertainment.

This is a tech preview not a system announcement! People aren't that dumb here!
Can't even call it a preview. It was just a mistake. From start to finish a mistake. If it was for developers then they wouldn't need to spend so much time explaining the benefits of SSDs to them. This is the first official PS5 news from Sony other than the logo from CES.

On the flip side Xbox has shown every little detail of whats in the box how the box is made and why. Spoiler, it's for air flow. On top of that we have Digital Foundry doing a deep dive into the features and why they matter. Then there's Austin Evans showing off the same info in his own, more playful, way. They have posted videos showing off how the SSDs helps performance with an older open world game that isn't even optimized for the Series X. As well as a video showing off how Quick Resume works.

Sony.... Where did your marketing department go? What little news we got out of this presentation was bad news. The SSDs are nice I guess. But let's say they are twice as fast as Xbox. So something loads in 2 second instead of 4? Yay for that I guess.

As a PS fanboy i have to say im extremely disappointed with today. The 10.2 tflops was welcome but finding out that its not fixed and can dip sounds like marketing spin BS to me. It sounds like github was right all along and it is actually 9tflops with some marketing spin.. MS built a console for the future, sony built one for 2019. And the backwards compatibility not working with even most games? Fuck outta here. I was initially a day one buyer, now im a wait see.

The thing will probably sound like a fucking jet engine too all the time, Sony ALWAYS skimps on R&D ergonomics with the consoles.

Cerny even joked about it, loving the awful racked about playing God of War and "being able to tell when the power is ramped up".

I also wanted to mention that a lot of companies in the last several years have shift to do their main marketing near the release of their product/service. Sony used to announce a lot of thing years in advance but now they start to reveal things closer to release. These live streams are not the main part of the marketing, it's most enthusiasts who would frequent websites like NeoGaf and IGN who are going to watch this. Not the average gamer who goes and buys a PS/Box to just play GTA, Fornite COD and Minecraft. The mainstream gamers aren't the 2 million people that play BloodBorne or the 5 million who play gears of war. The enthuthiatsts learn about the games and consoles regardless of how sexy the presentation (even though this isn't for them and is limited by the coronavirus). There's going to be events and mainstream marketing efforts near the actual release.

Didn't they say it'll come out 2020?

Don't remember but part of china's still on lockdown parts of Europe are starting to go on lockdown they reckon it could last passed the summer in some places. So who knows honestly when it will be launched i do hope both will come out but even dev teams are going to be behind

Because it was meant for GDC which was canceled due to the virus that's why. It was stated before the event started. The full reveal is unknown as of yet

GDC = Game Developers Conference not really for the gamers

Here's the road to PS4 notice anything similar. Again not for the gamers

Do yu really think developers need a primer on what an SSD is and how it's useful?

It really feels like they cheaped out with PS5, that being said a $299 mic drop would be megaton though realistically i think $400 is more likely

It's for junior or aspiring devs as well for all. In the PS4 one, they talk about old games and tips and tricks they did back then. Why would devs need to learn that

I think they will both launch on schedule, but will be supply constrained (which they usually are anyway at launch). I think once they open pre-orders, people will need to be QUICK, unless they want to wait months to get one.

Dev teams might not be though. Again fingers crossed they're both on time

Comparing a tech briefing aimed at game devs (this presentation was supposed to happen at GDC, remember?) to a console reveal aimed at the general public is stupid.

All we saw was Cerny blabbing about design goals and throwing in some specs here and there - so use your imagination:

If it's the same price it will matter. ps5 will still win, but xbox will be way more competitive this gen.

Sony lost me as a consumer for their smartphone last year, TV this year and now PlayStation as well.
I was hoping in terms of power it would be 11.TF, but the only thing I could be excited about was the SSD.
The system is a complete letdown, regardless of what it will cost it's not for me - such a damn weird feeling to part ways.

I haven't been able to watch all of the announcement yet, but as smart as Mark Cerny is, he's a really poor presenter, it seems. I know it was aimed at developers and not consumers, but even the graphics they presented on the small screen next to Cerny looked cheap and off.

Compared to the way Microsoft presented the SSD, the cooling etc., this definitely felt like a huge step backwards from the PS4 reveal. The odd yellow colour used, the italic font used constantly. I wonder how tone deaf Sony must be to release such a video, when they know damn well that 65-70% of the console customers are eagerly awaiting info about the next version of the Playstation.

Come on, you still buy one. As I did with XB1 when FH2 came out. Now I am glad due to BC, to be honest.

Nah man, the OG Xbox One is a joke. I also bought one for FH2 but the console was so anemic that I didn't buy anything other than the Forza games for it. Literally no point in playing any third party games on it, even if they could be had for cheaper. If I could do it all again I'd wait for the Xbox One X and buy that to play all the exclusives and then at least have the option to play 3rd party games on it at a good standard should I wish to.

Lesson learnt, I'll be waiting for the PS5 Pro provided they don't also dump all their games on PC in which case I never buy another console again.

If a developer doesn't understand storage and retrieval, I don't think most would start at Cerny's PS5 reveal. This comes off as a technical presentation dumbed down for a general audience. It's entirely ineffective for all parties.

Exactly. People are hyped and eager to learn more about the PS5, their hype is on them. This was never meant to be a huge PS5 reveal event. I feel like that was made abundantly clear.

Of course they're going to share it on social media and try to get as many people to see it as possible. It's about their new console. If they're going to take time to put this out there, they're going to want as much attention as possible. Problem is, it's like they don't realize the majority are chomping at the bit for a more reveal-centric event, like PS4's, which is what this wasn't.

No games at a GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE? Interesting.

I've not been to GDC, personally, but I've attended other developer conferences. This is par for the course from a hardware maker. I'm not sure why they opted to do this unless they needed to make the hardware publicly known. Maybe today was about attracting third parties.

The problem is, outside of a vacuum, that doesn't really work as an excuse.

Series X marketing is firing on all cylinders, and has been since December. Sony's approach comes off awkward and stilted.

If at another event beforehand, or as an additional part of this one, they really needed to have that consumer-facing hype. Microsoft is controlling all next-gen hype right now, and I'm not exactly sure what Sony is doing.

You're right, and Sony could have certainly timed this in a manner that showcased PS5 to consumers ahead of the hardware tech talk since there's not going to be an E3. A spoon full of sugar...

That said, these sorts of things happen all the time in marketing. Xbox has its momentum for now, but by October it will be about new games more than anything else. Will the new generation offer anything representing a true leap forward? What killer piece of software is going to usher us forward??

And I'm not really seeing it, yet... Sony still has that key opportunity to steal the momentum.

You talk sense, ignorance is not bliss in this circumstance.

Even though some were disappointed with the specs. At the end of the day, it's all about the games. But I still blame Jim Ryan. He looks like a typical waterfall business man. ITS TIME TO GO!!

The proper response.

I am re-watching the PS4 announcement video. They really knocked it out of the park and then used that momentum to really stick it to Xbox for the majority of this generation. They didn't have to show off the box back then. They showed us the same "deep dive" type of information that the showed today for the PS5. But they did it while showing examples. They did it while showing the controller. They did it while showing what performance of the Unreal Engine could look like on their new hardware. They did it while showing the new dashboard and social features like the share button/features. They did it while showing Remote Play with a Vita. They did it while showing new games that couldn't be done on the PS3 hardware.

They did it while giving us a reason to want to buy a PS4. They showed new games. Games like Knack, Kill Zone Shadow Fall, Drive Club, Infamous Second Son, Watch Dogs, Destiny, and a few others.

Today we got...

While the PS4 announcement was 2 hours long it felt much shorter than the hour Cerny put on today.

To say I am disappointed would be an understatement.

Here is today's announcement if anyone missed it.

Sony had a great succes because Microsoft were fuck heads at the beginning on this gen, and they used it for their advantage.

Microsoft has lately a steady track of doing the right things compared to back then, and that leaves Sony no wave to ride on.

But don't worry, they'd still sell better. They have some of the most loyal fans out there so they'd be fine.

It was like a technical deep dive into why you should be excited for it. It was actually supposed to be a GDC talk and not a gigantic shiny announcement with people playing Lets Dance 2021.

I got a lot of interesting information today and the only things I don't know yet are the way the console looks, release date and price. Which I think will happen all at once later this year

The internet is reacting as if this were the reveal event (which it wasnt) but that's a fault of Sony. They should have thought this through....

Lets not forget Xbox also had a presentation for developers today. But they didn't stream it from their youtube channel. Instead they allowed IGN and GameSpot to stream it. It's more of a live conversation about the series X. But even this was more consumer and dev friendly compared to the mess Sony showed today.

They even showed off what their xCloud blade looks like. Sony on the other hand told us their specs suck.

I wonder if the early XSEX reveal has had an effect on how this reveal was taken. If this video was done much earlier and prior to MS revealing all their specs I think the reaction would have been much more positive and more muted.

PS5 Weaker console, no actual backward compatibility with upgraded games like raytracing and 4k added, nothing about a better controller with better latency etc, sounds like some games might not be even native 4k, im very disappointed if anything this seemed like Sony trying to damage control and are freaking out over the powerful series x, probably will try to push their crappy blurry Ps Now service ,xbox has been more pro consumer while Plasytation just acts like they care but then force you behind paywalls and subpar experiences.

All it would have done is make the Series X look even better.

I'm more concerned about the fact that both consoles are getting released today with those ridiculous RT performances, and they need to survive for atleast 5 years. What is going to happen is that developers are going to ignore completly those rt useless core, and publishing games as normal. RT, for me isn't ready for a release, like it wasn't ready on a RTX 2080ti. What we have to expect from those console? Sub-par 2080ti RT performance at the best, and in the best case scenario aren't ready enough. Waste of time and money.

It felt pretty amateurish, it wasn't terrible but considering how little information Sony has been releasing about the ps5 it REALLY hurt the presentation.
This whole lead-up to the ps5 launch over the last 1+ has been terrible. I just hope they slay the launch in relation to actual games. This is about the only ace Sony might have left against Microsoft

And none of the things you mentioned will effect sales at all this holiday season. Most people buying these systems will have watched neither of the presentations. They will buy the console that has the games they want, and or the console most of their friends play on.

RT, for me isn't ready for a release,

The stuff Control did with RT was/is awesome and I am excited to see what a few upcoming titles do with it to. As you stated, it might not be ready for you, but on my rigs its bananas. It will take devs a bit of time to adapt to using it for the new consoles probably....but what new piece of hardware/tech doesn't require that?

The presentation was pretty much on par with every technical presentation I have been to at GDC. They should have adjusted expectations for the folks that this video was NOT aimed at since everyone could watch it. Hardware sounds great and excited (from a back end perspective) to see what shops do with the hardware.

So no games? They didn't show the actual box off? Asking here because the other threads are too long and/or shitposty.
It wasn't a reveal, it was for the Game Developers Conference that was cancelled. This was not for gamers but a technical analysis for developers.. People complaining about this presentation are straight up stupid!
