How did the 3DS become so popular so suddenly?

To recap everything listed in this thread:

> Good hardware
> Great price post price cut
> Great bundles and deals
> Great advertising
> Successor to a wildly popular system
> Backwards compatibility
> The glassless 3D thing is finally catching on at the low price
> GAMES like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7 and Pushmo.

Do you include in-store deals as part of advertising because I think that's a big part of it too. I haven't seen any 3ds on sale without a $20-$30-$40 gift card attached in major retailers like Best Buy, Target, Frys, etc.

The third reason I listed is great bundles and deals.
There ARE a surprisingly large number of deals for the 3DS. I wonder if Nintendo itself has anything to do with this...

You should specify Bieber advertisement honestly.

not sure, but the stores realize they if they get someone in their store with a gift card, then when the person comes back, they will most likely spend more than the amount the gift card is for. for example, i've got gift cards for birthday presents when i was younger. if i got a $50 gift card to target from my grandma and had some cash from other relatives, i'd be more inclined to spend that cash at target, mainly because of the convenience my parents saw of not having to drive to other places. if they get kids or parents buying for kids to buy it with a gift card, that gift card will turn into a good investment for the company imo

It must be selling well to people who are just after a Nintendo handheld of any kind. It's priced low enough now to be the default option. Mario Kart doesn't hurt either. On the other hand, this suggests that deficiencies such as poor battery life, single analog, region locking, chintzy hardware, and rudimentary online servies don't matter. Not surprising, but sad in a way.

Bielieve.

came in here to post this!

Yes, I've realized it is the advertising and games xmas combo. Saw some really amazing commercials that make me see how casuals would run to get one.

Also, Bieber > PSPMarcus.

At work yesterday I overheard a guy say his son played Mario Kart 7 at a friend's house the day before and wanted a 3DS. Apparently it was hell discovering out it's sold out everywhere a few days before Christmas. So I'm going with the Mario Kart effect.

Again I'm really not seeing the supposed popularity in my area. I was at a local Best Buy in Tampa yesterday and they had a ton of stock, online retailers all have plenty too. The only system that seems to be in short supply around here or online is Wii.

People felt sorry for Iwata and they bought some 3DS, so that he wouldn't be so unhappy.

I know I would do that. I respected him when he took the blame for the 3DS fiasco instead of firing other employes who just followed orders like other companies do.

Software. Mario Kart and Mario 3D Land are new, excellent games, and people want to buy them. The price is decent now. There's some solid games available for download too.

The same thing that always sells consoles?

Just when you thought Nintendo fans couldn't get any more delusional...

This honestly has to be the worst thread on GAF right now. Literally nothing of value has been posted past the first ten posts, its just the same people reiterating the same points over and over again.

And we don't even know if it sold well! We're just going off what some random GAFFer said!

Never change Nintendoids.

For someone who hates things being repeated over and over, you sure do repeat yourself a lot. Keep fighting the good fight man!

Well, if the actual sales come back as positive as this thread, I'm more than willing to say that they should have at least secured the holiday demographic for the next few years.

At that point the more interesting question moves from "Will the hardware sell reasonably well worldwide?" to "What breadth of content can the platform sell?"

Resident Evil: Revelations I feel will be the next interesting litmus test on that front, unless I'm forgetting a notable game before February.

I really gotta wonder, how much did nintendo pay to have the 3DS in a justin bieber video centered around shopping? Because as much as I hate his music, it was a brilliant move, and one of the best places they could spend money for product placement.

I'm not going to buy it until they release a better battery

A better screen is more important imo. I can't tell you how many times I've died, lost a race, missed something, etc. because I barely moved the system and lost my view of the game. The no glasses is nice, but the viewing angle sucks.

And best of all: We don't even know if it actually sold well! We're just going off what some random GAFFer said!

And nothing of value was made in your post. I agree that this thread does resemble, as you put it "one big Nintendo fan circlejerk" However, calling people Nintendoids doesn't make your statement sound any less fanboyish. If you don't agree with op's conclusions, why don't you offer your own opposing anecdotal evidence? I've seen others in this thread do just that, for and against op's conclusions.

Lastly, I don't even know why you feel the need to name-call people that obviously celebrating 3ds success =/. I think it's understandable that for some, the success of the 3ds helps validate their own uncertain purchase.

Seriously, dude? Your post was okay until that. :l

You sound a little salty lol.

ace comb-

oh you said notable.

I saw it on sale at the Auchan @ 139€ a couple of weeks before christmas.

That's really cheap for en electronic device not even 1 year old.

Such price + the new Mario (people seem to never have enough of it .... bah) = very strong sales.
(I suppose there were similar discounts/offers in US as well)
