How did you convert your parents to switch from iPhone to Android devices?

again, why are you trying to buy her the most expensive iPhone in this comparison? Buy her a cheaper one if that's the phone series she likes. a 128gb iPhone 7plus isnt $1000 as it is, its $880, maybe with tax and fees you'll hit 1k, but then you'll be paying tax and fees for the other phone too.

Also, if you are that worried about her losing stuff, get insurance on it.

This, or just get an older iPhone -- not like they're going to be playing bleeding edge games. I'm still on a 5S and it works fine.

I'm a die hard Android user. I would never force my 65+ year old parents to move to Android. It isn't that different from Android but is just enough to be friendly to all people despite level of computer literacy.

I bet your parents also call you for every little thing that goes wrong with their iPhones too. Now imagine having to reteach them everything again, because Android

lol

Why are you comparing a iPhone 7 plus 128gb to a Moto G4?
Because both are goddamn phones that basically do the same shit.

That's like saying a Ferrari is the same as a Nissan because they both get you to work in the morning.

My dad can barely handle using his iPhone.

I am too busy to teach him how to use another phone so I let him stay on his iPad and iPhone where he is happy.

My dad only has an iPhone because he lost his flip phone a year or so ago and my brother gave him his old iPhone. He does not know how to text, email, or use any of the smartphone features. I'm not sure a person in their 70's needs a smartphone, period.

what a terribly odd question.... "I don't want to buy them an iphone 7, so I am going to buy them an old ass android phone"

so why not buy an old ass iphone? you can get a 5 for close to $100, and a 5s for like $150-180.

I currently have the iPhone 7 Plus 128gb, but I am thinking about returning it. Shit is expensive yo.

Your comparison is still confusing. You are comparing the top of the line iPhone model to a budget Android phone. You can get an iPhone 7 for 650. iPhone 6s for 550. iPhone SE for 400. You could probably get a used SE for a few hundred. You could definitely get a used 5s for like 150 or something. Plus the 128GB 7+ isn't even 1000.

Another Tony Stark thread.

When you think a quite cheap Android phone will be enough, why would you chose a top of the line iOS device to compare it to?

Anyways, have fun with all the stupid questions that will arise. Your sanity should be worth a couple of hundred bucks.

I can remember how one of my brothers went against all of us others to buy my father a cheap Android tablet on which he flashed a custom firmware because that would be just as good as an Ipad. My father just could not get behind the thing and annoyed the fuck out of everyone with his stupid questions.

Thank god he is using iOS devices now and there are barely any issues. Now your parents already know iOS so it would be even worse.

my dad just got an SE. no money down. Canada too.

i would never convince them to switch to something they weren't comfortable with.

It's not $1,000. It's $940 after tax.

I still have the option to trade in iPhone 6 for $650 trade in credit, since I pre=ordered it on 9/9

I don't care what brand of devices other people use

As for my parents my dad doesn't even own a mobile phone and refuses to even consider it. My mum has a cheap windows phone and she wrote the number on the back in sharpie. I don't think they really care about brands either

I don't understand why you are avoiding the points people are making. Why are you comparing the top of the line iPhone to a budget Android? Why not pick up a used iPhone 5S for 150 or that Straight Talk iPhone 5S someone else linked to earlier?

There are more iPhones available than just a 1000 dollar model especially if the G4 is your baseline of comparison.

Once I show family members how irritating it is to get any non-iTunes, non-iOS-supported media to an iOS device and then access it on the device, no more convincing is required. The whole walled structure for each app's file storage can be very frustrating. If you live your whole life in iTunes then I guess iPhone works fine, but as soon as you venture out into any other content, in any other formats, iOS just isn't as easy to use as Android.

My kids (5 and 2) have co-opted all of our tablets. They always pick the Sony tablet first over the Apple one.

Because I can trade in an iPhone 6 to get $650 credit towards my iPhone 7 plus jet black.

I am deciding whether I should trade in an iPhone 6 towards my iPhone 7 Plus or return my iPhone 7 plus.

Went the other way for my family. They all started with android devices and at this point every member of my fam uses Apple. I don't think they care about the price and they pay for their own phones.

Buy her a 16 gb iPhone SE for $400? My mom really likes hers as it is very fast and near perfect size for her since it can still fit in women's pockets unlike massive phablets.

Set up the plans for them. Make it streamlined and simple.

My in-laws decided not to listen to me, got iPhones with T-Mobile, complained about service, left T-Mobile before the phones were paid off, switched to Verizon, got another round of iPhones, are paying 230 a month for service, and are now begging me to set them up with service again.

They're getting androids on T-Mobile.

They literally use none of the features that makes owning an iPhone worth it.

Got my mother in law an iPad and iPhone. The complete lack of tech support time is priceless.

I'm not convinced android devices would offer the same benefit.

Get her the iPhone SE ($450-$500)
-A9 / M9 coprocessor
-12 mp rear cam 4K video / 1.2 mp front
-2 GB RAM
-64 GB storage
-touch ID / fingerprint
-don't get 16 GB version

It will be great upgrade from the 5s. Best 4 inch phone on the market.

I'd consider the opposite should it work out better for my mom. But that's the thing, what actually works best for her?

Doesn't help Samsung is apparently moving into the explosives business.

I would get her the moto. It's a perfect replacement phone. It's basically the reason I don't bother with phone insurance because the Moto G is an extremely capable phone should something happen to whatever flagship I have at the time. There's usually some kind of deductible too so I feel like I might as well just buy a brand new low to mid-range phone instead and I'll be fine. I've never had anything happen or go wrong too, so that's also why it seems stupid to waste money on insurance. Also phones have a warranty anyway, and I have never had a drop cause any visible damage because I use cases. And don't listen to the apple loyalists in here, the 4th gen Moto G does everything an iphone 7 plus does, just slightly slower and the camera isn't as good, but still a decent shooter. Moto is really good about not putting a bunch of bloat on their phone. It's significantly faster than a Nexus 5 and Galaxy S4, which is plenty fast to handle Android pretty much without a hitch.

I would rather have two of these for that price.

I've always heard bad things about BLU. Moto G 4th gen is a better phone imo. The Snapdragon in the moto is a 6 series vs a 4 series for the BLU.

Garbage CPU, garbage camera and no NFC from a no name company. You would have been better off recommending the One Plus 3.

Edit:
BLU Products is an American mobile phone manufacturer founded in 2009 and headquartered in Doral, a suburb of Miami, Florida.

Its phones are targeted at low-income people inside the USA, Western Europe, and China, and the wider market in countries such as Costa Rica and Brazil where average income is lower.

Yeah, I'll stick with my recommendation of the iPhone SE.

I converted them the other way around. My sibling use iPhones so I made my parents switch so my siblings have to help them with support. I take care of all other IT issues with their PC and such.
My brother didn't think it would be a problem because iPhones are so easy. Ha! He underestimated how terrible my parents are at any tech.

my whole family was iOS, but I convinced them to get one plus one when I snagged invites.

In the end it all depends on how much of a 'power user' they were before. If you just use basic apps like facebook, phone, youtube, netflix, texting, it takes basically no time to transition.

price, you can get better Android phones at 400 than iPhone especially if large screen is required. and it's really not that hard to change to Android... My 70 years old mother is fine with it.

My time is worth money. I'd rather spend more and not have to worry about troubleshooting issues I'm not even familiar with. My Mom and Dad know exactly how to use their iPhones and are resistant to change.

As for the price, just buy an older used iPhone. They won't care and you'll save some money and have peace of mind.

EDIT: a brand new iPhone SE is $400, by the way.

They're switching from iPhone to Android, not piloting the space shuttle. The biggest learning curve will be some navigational changes, that's it.

Gave my father my iphone 5 when I upgraded. He loved it.

Gave my wife my iphone 6 when I upgraded. She loves it and I love her battery lasting through the day without needing to recharge.

My 90 yr old grandfather has been living alone since my grandmother died 5years ago and he can't leave his house on his own. He would be almost isolated from the world if it wasn't for the ipad he uses constantly for games, news, facebook etc. He even complained when he had to go to an old folks home after a hip replacement beacuse their wifi was terrible.

I didn't because I dont hate them. And I don't want to be called constantly to answer tech questions.

God bless Apple for making their devices so easy to use even the elderly can figure them out.

Troubleshooting my grandma's iPad is actually the biggest pain in the ass in the world, especially since I live across the continent. It's a much bigger pain than anything else I've troubleshooted(including Androids).

Y'all make it seem like iphone has no usability issues and isn't super complicated to navigate these days.

I have to help troubleshoot people's phones in the office like at least once a week, and im not even the IT guy.

iPhone is generally better on the security side (still vulnerable but way harder to get viruses) though.

The phones being compared are hilarious. The choice is either the best iPhone available on the market vs a peice of shit Android phone lol. Why not iPhone 6? Or like a Samsung Galaxy phone?
