How do *you* drive manual transmission

You're off by about 25% and I hardly think transmission choice has anything to do with how much of a man you are. Europeans also drive significantly less than Americans do because their cities are centrally-designed.

No. You are wrong. It greatly affects a man's T.M.I, by a factor of 10, generally speaking.

When you guys say put it in neutral when braking, do you mean depress cloth and put the knob to the center or just push the clutch in? My dad would always have me do the latter while putting it into first.
Put the knob to neutral and coast to a stop using the brake pedal.

I can't imagine why this would be worse for your car than downshifting, other than the obvious wear on the brakes.

Brake. Biggest pet peeve ever.

LOL, whoops. That's my beat-chopping side of the brain taking over.

And if you don't have enough room to do a nice easy stop, you hit the brakes until the engine is around 1500rpm then you put it in neutral, basically the idea is that the transmission should always be engaged unless you're shifting or it would stall the engine.

Reading your post, I think I reversed what I would do as what your saying sounds right: I'd hit the brake first then pop the car into neutral for a sudden stop.

Hmm, I'm going to be making mental notes of exactly what I do when I drive home in an hour, lol.

Huh? What cars don't have them as options? You've never heard of 3 on the tree for Olds?
Oldsmobiles hadn't had manuals for like 30 years before they gave up the ghost.

I only use engine braking to control speeds, not to come to a complete stop, that sounds...retarded.

Like on the highway, when getting to the tolls, drop into 4th let go of the gas and coast through it at a constant speed.

Nothing retarded about slowing down the way you're supposed to.

Are manual drivers more prone to car accidents?

my own observations

Europe: 85% drives manual, everyone I get in a car with is keeping his eyes on the road

US: 98% drives automatic, half of the people I got in a car with loved to drive their SUV 55 in a 35 zone while talking to their passengers in the backseat

...

although for the US the manual drivers might include the "Fast & Furious" crowd so the answer *could* be yes over there :p

I drive mine like every other British kid with their first car. Ragging it round corners and kicking back with the stereo pretty loud.

Drive manual or go home. That's pretty much the way it is over here, hardly anyone drives auto.

Think my gearbox is dying though haha.

To all the people in this thread that shift a manual gearbox into neutral to coast answer this question:

Do automatic gearbox's in "drive", at any point while moving, shift to neutral?

Serious question.

Moot point, automatics have a completely different way of functioning.

And here I thought the brakes were for slowing down to a stop.

They are, that doesn't mean you can't combine it with engine braking.

Look, if you want to stick with dodgy driving technique it's fine by me, but don't start defending it. You don't put a car in neutral to stop.

This topic is funny :P

I am from europe, where stick driving isn't something "cool", but normal for everyone. Automatic cars are very rare, seen like two in my lifetime :P

And for the stop/neutral debate... As i was taught by my driving instructor (and how everyone else does it here) is that you do your regular braking and downshifting (not skipping gears), you never go into the first but stop in 2nd gear. You do so holding down the clutch (not switching to neutral/1st) until you have stopped using your lovely brakes! :)

The only manual I've ever been in was my friend's and the only reason he got it was that it was the only piece of shit he could find for 700 bucks.
