I've only ever seen Panda Express in airports, malls, and college student unions. I had no idea there were stand-alone stores. I've never tried it because I'm not to keen on food that has been sitting under a heat lamp for unknown lengths of time.
I hate the veggie they mix in and it makes them different tasting than actual Chinese takeout independent restaurants in a bad way
I like the really generic style of Chinese takeout that most of the little independent places have and Panda Express isn't quite like that. They're a slightly different style and it's not as good imo. Their meals are around the same price as the independent restaurant lunch specials, so I opt for the non-Panda style. I just prefer the more iconic generic stuff over the Pana version even though theirs is fine.
It all tastes delicious and I feel no shame in eating it once every 2-3 months.
Chinese food in general is loaded with additives that aren't good for you, singling out Panda Express because it's "unhealthy" is just hypocritical if you go on about loving "authentic" chinese food not to mention any mainstream fast food restaurants in general.
I've had exactly the opposite experience. I had it during college, and then a 9 year gap. The place I had it in was brand new and it was much more like Chipotle then fast food. It was delicious.
It's alright, but none of the ones in my area have a drive-through so I don't think of it as fast food. It's more like a equivalent of a Subway for fake Chinese food or something.
