How do you name your characters?

Mostly I just use my own name but I can't help but feel that the name is out of place. Like a medieval story and then a chinese name just appears.

Do you guys use lore-friendly name or just whatever?

Basically this is how it feels.

I tend to go lore-friendly or related to the kind of build I'm going for. For instance, if I go weeabo-katana, which I often do, I'll use something Japanese, usually 'Tengu' or something similar.

If I can't think of a name, I always default to 'Nemo'.

In most games I use lore friendly, but games like Fallout which are set on earth I'll use either my name or a superhero name like Steve Rogers or Bruce Wayne.

If there's a default name and character like "Link" I'll go for that.

If there's customization at all but a "default character" (Ala Corrin/Robbin) I'll make my own Character and name them "Nights", which is basically my go to for everything.

If there's only male characters I just go default or begrudgingly make -something- I like.

If there's a default I often leave it, besides that it's generally random names that fit in single player RPGs. In multiplayer games I tend to stick with a few names that I commonly use though.

I've rarely used my real name. I remember doing it once for fun on a playthrough of Persona 3 Portable, since that actually has a female protag option. Instant regret after remembering Mitsuru constantly calls you by your surname. Which I found really annoying, lol.

Default when possible.

Abylim for male MC and Adiri for fem MC

It's cute, my 12 year old daughter uses Adiri for everything now. She says it's the coolest name ever.

It's been my goto name for a girl character since WOW

default

if there is no default and they ask "what is your name" i put my real name

in online games, I want to name myself "hydrophilic attack" but it's usually too many characters so i have to settle for something lame like "hydrophilic ATK" or "hydrofilic atak" to fit within 15 characters

My name as I also create characters that look like me.

Now if I'm just naming an already created character without any customization like Link I go with the default name.

The exception was of course early Pokémon games but I played those on a Gameboy Pocket so I couldn't tell the main character's skin color.

I try to be somewhat lore compliant, if the game lets me. It's hard to know the tone of names in a game if the very first thing you have to do is enter a name.

Other than that, I either use some recurring names, or if the tone needs it, some punny name. You will never see me make a Saiyan in Dragonball Xenoverse that is not some kind of vegetable pun, for instance. That'd just be wrong.

Either the default, something lore friendly. Or character names from whatever book I am reading at the time. But if I'm playing Zelda then link is always named Mr.G⭐.
Edit: Also using wheel of time character names for any type of medical fantasy setting.

Stick with default but if I'm playing as myself then will drop the first 4 letters off my name. Ends up as a one syllable word and sounds decent enough.

I take existing names from characters in other works of fiction and mix them up a bit. Sometimes I make ones up entirely for a fantasy setting. All times I try to make lore friendly to fit with the world.

I am a master in role playing.

I go through phases where one name sticks in my mind and I pass it along to all current characters.

Right now I'm really drawn to a location name: ANGKOR WAT

The name is as mysterious as the Cambodian temple it's derived from.

Great Yes song too. :p

A mix between something that would fit in the game's world and something dumb.

Like, say, Count SweetAss of Lothric or something like that.

I use my name when I make a male character / if the character is a blank slate (Like Persona).

I use Gradon for female characters I make.

Default name if they have a name (like Earthbound).

I like coming up with interesting names for my characters. They are all lore-friendly I would say, but I definitely try to think of something a bit more unique. Playing RPGs kind of invites that sort of creativity to mold your character which I enjoy.

If there is some sort of oficial name like "link" I'll go with that one.
Otherwise, if it looks like the story and characters will be a relevant part of the game I try to come up with a name that I like and fits the character, if it's a more gameplay centric game I'll mostly use some silly name.

I use spells from Asheron's Call. Malar Aetak usually - it was for Swift Killer. Malar Aeril is another, it was Blood Drinker.

every character i create is named 'kupo' (full name 'kupo kupopo'). this way, whenever anyone greets me, it's always, 'hello, kupo!' :) ...

Ever since playing Sakura Wars V, I've always named my MC/someone in my team 'Gemini'. Bonus, it's gender neutral. If it's a very Japanese setting, Maken/ai(see: Sailor Moon Sailor Stars).

Almost always the default name, using anything in persona that sounds english looks ridiculous ingame.

If not, just Gambino. usually fits

If it's a JRPG with a Japanese setting, always a Japanese name. Usually make the name out of film director surnames and first names of other Japanese fictional characters depending on what seems fitting.

The only game I'll use my own name in is Pokemon.

I typically use whatever the default Canon name of the character is. Only exception is Pokemon. I name the character after myself for the newer ones

For games that have default names, I always leave these. For games that have pretty well known canonical names, I use these. For example, I always name Link "Link", even when the game doesn't give you a default.

For games that are pretty much "create a character", I have a bunch of character names that I tend to stick to. The first one, Weltall Zero (Xenogears-inspired), is from my Phantasy Star Online character, a Cast (robot). This is usually my default in modern or sci-fi settings. Besides that one, the vast majority of the character names I use come from my World of Warcraft characters:
  • Nuala (from Sandman), orc rogue which became my main and is therefore my default female character name. Since I will almost always create female characters by default, this is the name of my main Dark Souls / Bloodborne characters.
  • Kurogane (Japanese for "iron"), orc warrior / blacksmith, and Tenrai (one way of saying "thunder" in Japanese), tauren shaman, which are names I tend to use for male characters in fantasy settings, especially Japanese.
  • Shirogane (Japanese for "platinum", white-haired night elf rogue), Flameheart (original, troll mage) and Lachesis (from the moirai, undead priest and tailor), all originally female characters, although the first two ones are pretty gender-neutral.

I guess "lore-friendly" if that's an option is the way I usually go.

If it's like a create-a-character and there's nothing to base the name on, I'll make a female and name her Erana. Sometimes I'll make a weird alien or something if that's an option and name him something stupid like I did for the Xenoverse games where I named my created character "Carlos Danger" in 1 and "Boosh Magoosh" in 2.

If it's default I'll leave it.

If not then I'd either go for lore names if possible.

Depends tho sometimes I'll just go for a name that feels right.

Lore-friendly, I try to make it sound like something that fits the setting, or use the default if that's an option.

I'll get silly on 2nd playthroughs, though. I just started a Minish Cap save file where Link is named BORT.

If the character has a name I choose that one.

If the character doesn't have a name I go with stuff like Sasuke or edgy shit like Dragon or DragonSlayer.
In Dragon's Dogma I named my pawns like Game of Thrones characters. It fits super well actually when someone named Brienne of Tarth follows you :p

Normally if I am playing a game that has characters name set for the story already, I go by the game's default my first time. Like with Link for example. Then after I've beaten the game at least one time, any other time I play the game again, I name it after me, RoseBell. Then after I beat the game with my name as the character's, I name them whatever I am in the mood for.

For games with character builds(as well as character creation if its available in the game) like Torchlight or Xenoblade Chronicles X, I go all out to dedicate per character per characters I like in different games or shows.

In the case of Xenoblade Chronicles X, a game in which I have devoted 1500 hours into, I made about 6 characters in honor for my most loved/favorite characters in other series. I have made Kirby, Itachi, Zeratul, Samus, Bayonetta and Debora. With of course 4 other characters of different variations of me. All have different builds, looks that try to look like the characters themselves from their own series the best way possible and other things of that nature.

In the case of Torchlight, it is most similar to that of Xenoblade Chronicles X.

In the case of Dragon Quest(aka Depression Quest) series, I usually name the Hero character as Ali because the male MC gives me that Ali impression on their appearance, especially DQV's Hero lol. The rest of the nameable character casts, if its a female MC, there is a 50/50 of me naming her after me or leaving it default and for other other male characters, I leave their name as default.

If it's a JRPG without a default name, it's always 'Ash'. I've used it that way since Pokémon. If it's a WRPG, I'll use random basic names like Robert or Henry. If I'm a girl, I use my fiancée's name. Unless I can be an orc female. Then it's always 'Sheila'.
