How do you name your characters?

Most of my souls / Bloodborne characters are just regular names like Fred and Doug. Anything else I go actively lore friendly.
And I would argue that the names I do in souls could easily be lore friendly because you got dudes named Oscar

If possible, I go with the canon name... of another game's protagonist. Somrimes I'll take it a step further, too; I named my most recent Yellow run "Taichi" but named my Digimon World protagonist "Ash."

If there's no canon protagonist, however, I go with a name that'd fit the character. I wanted my Skyrim protagonist to be intimidating, but goofily so, & thus I went with "Bloodfeast," whereas I wanted a dopey Commander Shepard so I called him "Spraynard."

If it's a create-a-character I make myself and name it either Ryan or Ryanardo.

If the appearance can't be altered (or has very limited options) I'll make and/or name them lore-appropriately.

In the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, I named all the Krogans like brothers of Wrex: Wrock, Wroll, Wrath, Wrage, Wravage, Wrobert etc.

And all the Geth had numerical names i.e. 2152 = Bob.

If there's a mount of some sort that I can name, it's always Dengus. My character names always stick to the canon name or some random bullshit such as Fiddy Cent on my 2nd and 3rd Persona 5 runs. "Fiddy kun" is always something that cracks me up.

Unless there's an interesting default, I'll use my nickname or my name backwards, with variations depending on circumstances.

If it's a network account name that doesn't appear in dialog, then I'll stick with "emag".

I generally base them off whatever books i'm reading or are in my mind at the time, especially in games with character creators. For example, Vin from Mistborn for Dragon Age: Inquisition, Roland from Dark Tower for my Guild Wars 2 Engineer. Depending on how open the game is, i'll try to roleplay as if it's that character put into that world and how they'd act.

Usually my username, "Link" in (almost) every Zelda, the official name from the anime in Persona, sometimes my first name and maximum shitposting with my Dark Souls characters.

Tetum Cob is my go-to after consulting a friendgroup on Facebook. The first name is a phonetic abbreviation for the group name (TTM) and the second name was the first word said by someone in the group.

Chojin.

If its a single player rpg then my meat name so I can name the girl after my wife and then i can save her wheeeeeee vidya games. Prior to marriage it was always some girl I liked because creepy.

With pokeymans I'm an 8th grader and dirty and not very imaginative. (note pokemon first came to the states when I was 19)

I try to go for something that fits the world the game takes place in. Scirvir for all Souls games. Satoshi Hiwara for Persona 5.

Never after myself. I'm playing as characters, not avatars of myself.

Whatever's through my mind at the moment.

The last two characters I created are called Bezmalinohorovicich (Inquisition) and Donut Holshtein (DS III).

Whatever is closest to the default name, because I'm boring like that

If not, then I'll reference something like FF1's Black Mage being named Vivi

There's a few names I just kinda rotate, based on whether or not my game character is male or female.

Sadly, the male name I've been using since my very first MMO (FFXI) seems to be more common these days. I remember when WoW armory launched, I was proud to see I was the only one with the name. Some years later, when I tried to return to WoW for whatever expac it was, I saw people with the name on at least 20 different servers. Felt bad.

The female name I like to use is sort of an homage to one of my favorite films: Ofelia, which I personally lift from Pan's Labyrinth (not Shakespeare). I also just think it's a pleasant-sounding female name.

I name my male character Canon and my female Canonita. That was I keep it canonical.

Actually Leos or Darius for males and Leana for females. For stuff like Persona I use my own name.

All of my charcaters -- whether male or female, human or otherwise -- are named "Axl Rose".

Every single one of them. Because it's funny to me.

serious and lore-friendly on first playthrough, silly on subsequent ones

For RPGs it's usually an agonizing process that ends with modifying the babe of a character I like or combining it with another name.

For sports games where I create my own character I always go with Brooklyn Kurtz which was Clinkz's name in Chinese translated back to English by a Google.

I generally name then from the Culture Novels by Iain M Banks. Diziet Sma is my go to female name. It's the easiest one to remember too lol The others I look up to make sure I spell them right. You can tell I am big Culture fan by my username here.

For years I used Jax, because of Garet Jax in the Shannara series. When I went to arcades I even used JAX for high scores. Then came along Sons of Anarchy and the character of Jax Teller. I now no longer use Jax.

Default when possible. Otherwise Althena (from the Lunar series) or Athena for female characters or my own name (Frank) for male characters or Link, cause you know, Zelda fan.

Back in the day I was a huge Jim Carrey fan, so most of my characters were named Jim.

I like to have a lore friendly name.

Though I also find that "Wulfram" can fit the lore in a pretty wide variety of games. And I have a few other generic fantasy type names in reserve.

If I'm really stuck for a name, then typing randomly on the keyboard then editing heavily can come up with a decent result.

When chopped in half, I find the names of Gothic queens make surprisingly good Star Wars names.

If the game allows it i just use the default name, if not i use my nick here in GAF or the name of a fun videogame or book character

If there's a default name, I use that.

If it's a create-a-character then
Male: Glyde
Female: Cheshire
who often has green hair or at least green highlights

I've used the name Glyde for a long, long time, and Cheshire began as my Pawn's name in Dragon's Dogma, but then became my go-to name for female characters.

wRPG: Whatever feels right for the game's world and the kind of character I create for that playthrough.

MMO: Just the usual online monicker or something silly that relates to the class I'm playing as.

In JRPG type games I usually just go with the canon name.

For male characters, it varies. Sometimes I'll use my own name, other times something like Dacicus or Vasily or Hans or whatever.

For female characters, it's almost always Raluca.

I stick with default names when possible. My MMO characters are a mix of lesser-known book characters, historical figures, or randomly generated names I like. In single-player games with no default I use my name.

I usually just use my first name, or sometimes a simple username. If that doesn't fit the lore, I'll just tweak it a bit so that it works better.
