As in, I need to type out a formula in an email. I've only ever written sigma notation by hand, never typed it in plain text. I know how to type the sigma character, but how do I type the superscript and subscript expressions, or, alternatively, what is the accepted method of expressing those values in an alternative way?

You can also express superscripts and subscripts using ^ and _ respectively.

There's not really a good answer here.

Just make sure it's intelligible and ship it.

But the bottom thingy should be before the top thingy (think about how you'd say it!).

It'd be easier to just use Microsoft Word equation tool. Because what you wrote above looks like a mess.

You can still type $\sum_{i=5}^n = whatever$. I think if the other person knows latex they'll make sense of it. It's more readable than what I suggested.
