How does Nintendo top Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? By adding a full-fledged story mode

Am I remembering correctly in that the Wii version had a weekly mission or something? I know the DS had a mission mode but I thought Wii had one where you had to download the mission or something?

Anyways I would have liked something like that.

I'd love a story mode and think Nintendo could definitely pull it off.

I'll even admit I liked Subspace Emissary in Super Smash Bros. Brawl quite a bit.

Mission Mode in DS mode were excellent.

And let's not forget Mario Kart Wii Channel online Tournament/Competition mode. Basically online Mission Mode with leaderboards.

https://www.mariowiki.com/List_of_Mario_Kart_Wii_tournaments where they added special courses (eg. Galaxy Boss Battle!) and mixed up the regular courses with different hazards, objectives (eg. only roaming chain chomps, only Wii Wheel can be used to drive through numbered gates, drive backwards the entire time)

I've learned to not really care if we get a Smash Kart but I do think they should keep the idea going by adding Kirby or someone.

Mission mode should come back for up to 4 players locale or online. Expand unlocks in a neat way like badges or a title next to your name like in a fighting game, just to show off what you have done. Tones of QoL stuff because it still sucks. Why can't I choose exactly what items can appear? Why can't I choose the amount of racers in a single online lobby for a tournament? Just expanding what they have could go a long way.

kinda like the way Mortal Komba X does its story mode. I would be interested in a similar approach in Mario Kart 9

An adventure mode like Diddy Kong would be great, but I would also like a Smash Bros style soundtrack player. It feels like that should have been part of the deluxe version or Mario kart 8 already.

Come on now. With all the great music in MK8 there really ought to be a music player.

It would be nice, but I doubt they'll do it. The games sell well enough, so they probably don't see the need to add a story mode. I'd love it though (loved DKR/CTR).

Isn't this an idea that gets kicked around in some form or another every year for Mario Kart? Don't hold your breath.

Nintendo has a philosophy akin to 'keep them wanting more'.
For me, that has been never quite enough.

Deluxe is how I wish all their games were.. loaded with content. Hopefully they're turning over a new leaf. Just don't forget that Deluxe is a 2 year old game with an added mode with maps and minor tweaks. Brilliant game, but you're not getting this much content unless it's another deluxe version of something that has already been made.

I have had the same feeling ever since playing 8. And it doesn't even need a STORY as its new main thing, just any sort of contextual framing device. There's definitely an odd uncanny feeling when a game looks so loving crafted and with state of the art graphics depicting fully realized and expressive characters, and yet provides you with zero context for what you're looking at. I mean sure, they just happen to be having a race of course, but it's still weird not being told "Mario amd gang are having a racing grand prix today, come and join" and then maybe see them celebrate the winner at the end. The presentation as it is feels like I'm playing a very large demo, utilitary menus for going to gameplay and nothing else.

There are oddities that beg some modicum of explanation, like Metal Mario being his own character, Pink Gold Peach existing as an entirely new thing, all the Koopa kids being here but some notable exculsions, and stages like the toy room where it suddenly seems the characters are tiny and maybe just a a depiction of a child's imagination.

I am not scratching my head and crafting dumb theories over here, but I just find it odd when ZERO exposition or establishing is done. Imagine a photo-realistic AAA serious war shooting game, but it has no spoken words throughout its whole campaign, and doesn't even inform you who the wareing factions are or why they're fighting.

Resources are limited.
Resources are limited for their top selling series? I mean it's not like this series changes vastly between entries. The mechanics of the series stay the same with some tweaks, they re-use tons of old tracks, music, etc. Combine that with the likleyhood that the next MK on Switch(if there is one) will largely be visually the same, I don't see why they would struggle to make major additions the set of available game modes. Particularly when games within the same genre have already done these things.

Nah just make it Nintendo Kart.
If they want to keep the Mario Kart name, just call it Mario Kart All-Stars.
Having maps from all of Nintendo's games sounds way more exciting than a story mode. I'd love to see a Kirby or Pikmin course. Not to mention more items they can add from all the different franchises.

A story mode like the ones used on the GBC/GBA Mario Golf and Mario Tennis would be awesome. You could explore country clubs, talk to people, find items, participate in tournaments and missions.

Yeeeesss, that is exactly what I never knew I wanted for this series.

It's funny, there's always comics about 'why does Mario let Bowser in on his kart racing?' Well now they can actually explore that.

Considering how the original release of MK8 had a gimped battle mode, they clearly aren't infinite.

If the choice is more tracks and a mission mode that utilizes them or a cinematic story mode, I'm going g for the former every time.

Looking at the numbers the formula is good enough like that.

However, in the DLC form, an adventure mode would be cool. Just like a Diddy Kong Racing DLC with adventure and new pilots like Diddy.
The hub idea is mandatory, maybe adding extra objectives in the courses and then unlocking more kart parts.

Your Mii used as the insert character (or they could make a new character too) as you climb the latter to race in the ultimate grand prix. Stores to buy new parts and missions to unlock new karts.

I'd be okay with this.

Also bring back the emblem creator.

There's something desperately wrong with the company then when Sumo Digital can get more content in their Sonic racing games.

Nintendo generally just does the bare minimum with this series. MK8 being rushed out to help the WiiU, and it being the first HD MK, doesn't help things.

Nah, no Miis. Just pick 10 of the best characters and give them a story mode where you compete for a trophy.
No 'walking' on karts story like Diddy Kong Racing, but actual character walking like in Mario Golf.

I think that was more desperation to get a heavy hitter out to help the Wii U.

Story mode and boss battles would be nice. Maybe in a co-op story mode, even. But how would that even work? Mario is racing to regain his family's honor?

Spectator mode would be cool too.

S&ASRT actually doesn't, there's half as many tracks and four are direct ports from the previous game (which heavily reused assets).

It does have the world tour mode, which is great, but more in line with a mission mode since it doesn't have much unique single player content. All of it takes place on the same courses.

Less content? All Star racing has a campaign but instead only around 20 tracks. I take more tracks instead of some one and done single player content every time.

They first need to quit cutting characters and increase the total amount of courses with each game.

I'm sick of each new game removing a significant amount of characters.

I'm open to more single player content, though. I enjoyed Mario Kart DS's mission mode.
