How does pinball even work

the art of pinball is nudging the machine but not tilting, sorta like trolling GAF but not getting banned

What Pinball table most closely reflects a Nintendo hype/apologism thread?

Skilled pinball players can go hours on a single credit. Every shot is aimed to go somewhere for points, table effects and jackpots. Hitting the ball with purpose and nudging the table helps avoid the out lanes and hole.
Hardly hours! I'm moderately skilled and even the best will get exhausted eventually.

One day I'd like to get one of those virtual pinball machines with all the lights and feedback sensors. I wonder if they're making them with 4K (OLED!) screens now. I would go for real machines but I don't have the room for multiple machines and I definitely don't have the skill, resources and patience to maintain them.
There's nothing you can't pickup "on the job" when you own your own machine. And trust me, I know a few people who were thinking about getting a virtual pin, but once they got a real one didn't regret it for a second. And they can be had for so cheap in the US!

You only have to hear stories from Pinball owners on how much of a pain in the ass they are to maintain or worse if something goes wrong.

As lovely as these things are...it's alot less stress jsut sticking to the virtual recreations via FX2 and Pinball Arcade, but unfortunately they do not come close to the real experience.
Nah. If you enjoy tinkering, they're piss-easy as long as you get one that's working fine to start with. And there's a handful of communities which are happy to help with issues (Pinside, Tilt Forums, Aussie Arcade etc.).

That is absolutely the best analogy (or simile? No idea) I've heard for nudging/tilting.

Pinball in the gaming forum? MY TIME HAS COME!
It's been here for a while! Ignore the fact that it's a Pinball Arcade thread, these days (with the shitshow TPA has become) it's basically a real pinball thread with a bit of virtual thrown in.

That's really cool to know. I guess it is just uncharted territory for me, I'd be too worried about breaking something.

If I had the space for one, I'd definitely love to dip my feet and pick up a cheap one at first. Its so cool that there are so many communities keeping pinball alive though...I always get depressed when I peek my head into a "arcade" nowadays just to see it filled to the brim with skill and dancing games :(

As much as I love pinball I suck so hard. Went to the pinball museum in Las Vegas a year ago and sunk so many quarters in Bride of Pinbot trying to bring her to life. $40 dollars, and best I got to was phase 3.

Its all about learning the feel of the board imo. Best thing to do is to not get caught up on highscores at first, simply work on getting the ball where you want it to go consistently. Eventually youll learn all the ways you shouldnt hit the ball by trying to figure out how you should, then it just becomes a flow-state kinda thing for me.

Even if you think ball will be lost, you can save it with the edge of the flipper. Either one or both at the same time.

I haven't played a pinball machine in 16 years. Do any places still have them? I used to play 'em at a bowling venue.
Pinball has seen quite a resurgence in the past few years. More barcades are popping up and you can find a lot of pins out in the wild. Check out pinballmap.com to see if there's anything in your area. If you are near any decently sized metropolitan area, chances are there are pinball machines.

Tilting.

In modern games (can't remember how it worked in prime pinball) there is a little more to it than a binary tilt/didn't tilt.

If you come close to overdoing it, you may get either a warning, or a double warning. You are usually allowed two warnings per ball, and then any subsequent shove that would have previously got you just a warning will be a tilt.

Tilting will also usually take away any end of ball bonuses that you would get when you drained. Sometimes these can be substantial enough that it isn't worth the risk.

Best rememberances of Pinball games are those made by Digital Illusions on Amiga (Pinball Dreams, Pinball Illusions, Pinball fantasies) those were top notch.

Yup. But also, generally practicing to know what parts of the pinball machine are dangerous.
I do like pinball in the sense that once the ball starts hitting dangerous areas, and the ball speeds up, it becomes tense to tilt fast enough.

Considering that analog buttons are a thing do any pinball games take them into account so it's not strictly binary?

I never tilt while playing pinball, I'm always afraid that somehow I will fuck up the machine

You get two warnings and the third time is a tilt. If you drain without using those warnings, you probably drained earlier than you should have. Nudge, nudge, nudge.

I have a pinball machine collection in my basement. Pinball is the reason I don't play games nearly as much these days as I used to. I still love gaming, but nothing in gaming really compares to the physical nature of pinball. I've got 15 machines downstairs, and have two more coming. It's probably something I should rein in a bit...but nah.

Pinball league night is tonight. HYPED.

Pinball Fantasies, man... my sister and I spent hundreds of hours on that one. It was one of those early Amiga-to-PC ports that ran exceptionally well on my old 386. Always felt like I was cheating a bit by nudging the table and bouncing the ball out of the gutters down by the flippers, but hey, it worked. :D

There was a time back in the 90s when I was more into pinball than Street Fighter, that makes me feel so old. I even remember when the multi ball was introduced and dear God was it a game changer. It was like adding a double jump to Mario Bros.

I think it was called "Earthquaker"

Man, Multiball existed long before that. One of the first to use it that was crazy popular was Fireball that came out in 1972.

Not a traditional "spit out extra balls" kind of multiball, but you had to make some tight shots to create captive balls, then release them. The gimmick has evolved over time.

This depends on the table as well. Some tables, like Phantom of the Opera, are just designed to suck quarters and aren't very fun.

Damn...that sounds awesome. Do you have some pics of your collection if you don't mind sharing ? If not, maybe just a list of the tables you own ?

Super jealous

I know that, im afraid of destroying the machine, not losing
Remember, these things are built to be thrown around and last years on location, especially during the 80s and 90s when they were still mainstream popular. You can't do any serious damage to them without straining muscles.

Jeff actually has a Pinball Podcast you can listen to ;)

Sorry, Jeff

Edit: While I'm here, my machines (I've since moved house, but still have them):

Hell yeah, I love that 70's Bally art:

Fantastic stuff...I love those 2 tables. What is the little one in the middle ?
It's this one:

Youtube vid just for the music (because it's so 80s cop show/Miami Vice)

Was my holy grail. I'm from Australia but flew to Texas for the pinball festival in 2014, just to see 200+ machines and get some stuff signed. Fell in love with this while I was there, but gutted when I found it was never really sold outside the states. Then spent two years scheming to get one over here, when I found a guy who imported a bunch of cocktail machines. Happened that this was one of them, but he kept on asking for too much money. So waited until he put it up at no reserve and got it for way cheaper than I would've paid via any other method.

Because they were so unpopular in bars, if you find one there's a good chance it's in pretty good condition. Mine is practically flawless! And shitloads of fun, too.

Know where your shots are supposed to go, make those shotsz and you don't run into that issue. It is tough though.

Pinball is awesome. My biggest regret of the Wii an ex never returned was the loss of the Williams Pinball collection.
