How does PS4 video capture work, it seems to be delayed?

Original Post:
I'm playing Battlefield and I mow down a room full of guys, then I click the share button. The video capture it presents me with is several minutes old (maybe 5, 10 minutes behind), and therefore the moment I want to capture is gone.

I thought it was always the "last 15 minutes" as in the current 15 minutes. Is it the previous 15 minutes? I don't know what's going on.

We've now confirmed that there is a bug here. Scenario:

1. Start up a game without explicitly hitting the Share button and play for say, an hour.
2. Right after you do something cool, press the Share button.

The clip you are presented with is extremely out of date and does not contain the footage you want. There are some reports of people who say it works, but it seems that for most people in this thread it doesn't. Based on the official manual, the game should always have the most recent 15 minutes saved. It doesn't seem to do this properly at all.

As a work around, you can explicitly start recording at the beginning of a multiplayer match then start recording again after 15 minutes has passed. Rinse/repeat.

Its like your DVR. If you aren't recording a show, you can "rewind" back to 15min. So if something cool happens .. as long as 15min doesn't pass, you get to share that clip.

If you press the Share button, it automatically saves the last 15 min. So as long as your awesome antics are within that 15 min, you're good.

is there a way to edit these yet? or will that get patched in.

I want to cut out 20 seconds of that whole 15min clip it recorded.

Have you tried editing the clip? The footage should start exactly 15 minutes before you pressed the share button.

Yeah, once you pick out a clip, you can choose a start and end point. There's an "Edit" button.

I guess I'll post this here too

Yup this is happening to all games. Seems like its starts to record when you first start the game, then after 15 minutes it takes a break or stops. If you hit share though it will immediately start a new video and stop it when you hit share again. But if you hit share, start a new video and it goes past 15 minutes it doesn't record past the 15 minute mark. It's kind of a mess.

And add me to the 2K amazing lebron come back that I couldn't share.

Ah... I see. Well that s what was said since the beginning as ps4 is constantly recording.
Also, it s better to save after you know what happened no?

I can't believe how many people are confused about this. When something cool happens, you hit the share button and it saves the last 15 minutes (or however much time has passed since you last but the share button if it's less than 15) and starts recording a new clip. If you never hit the button, it doesn't save any video, and developers can choose to cut out sections of the game (such as cinematics and the like).

You can also tell the system to record something specific by double tapping the share button, then going to the menu once finished. It's good for when you know you're going to pull a stunt and don't want to deal with a bunch of footage.

Maybe it's just the games I play but this hasn't been my experience. It's worked exactly as advertised, every single time. I've recorded clips of Battlefield, Resogun, and Killzone.

Can I save multiple 15 min chunks and edit/upload them later?

Yes. As soon as you hit share, it stores the footage on your system. You don't have to do anything with it just then, and you can have as much as your hard drive can hold.

I couldnt find any option in the captures folder for uploading them after the fact. I might have missed it though

Just go to the clip and go to "edit". You can cut the section you want out and save that.

yeah I haven't seen an "edit" button yet...but I also haven't gotten past that Facebook login in thing...so is it after that part? Not trying to use Facebook yet.

I thought you could record these things and display them on your PSN profile and that's it?

This. Also, you can hit options while in the share menu and change the picture taking to one button press. Just thought I'd share.

How can the console even record the "next 15 minutes"?

I think it's a mixture of people not understanding the OP, and silly people being silly.

It's continuously recording the last 15 minutes of playtime. There's no need to activate it ever, it just does. If you did something rad that warrants uploading, just hit Share.

OP believed that once you press share the PS4 will start recording and that he has 15 minutes to do so

Turns out that the PS4 always records the last 15 minutes instead of the next 15 minutes

No, the OP did something cool and immediately wanted to share it, so he pressed Share. It sounds like either he just didn't go far enough into the saved clip to see the moment he wanted to share, or for some reason the PS4 was recording a much earlier 15 minute chunk of time.

The problem is the last 15 minutes are not always saved. If you start a game and never hit the share button for about an hour when you hit share you will probably have some random 15 minutes from early on, your last 15 minutes will not be there.

After you hit share it starts to record again.

You should set it to record the next 15 minutes so you can win any multiplayer match, OP.
Just hope that the other players don't find it out or you'll be screwed.

This thread is hurting my brain.

So..

You it always records the previous 15 mins. But you can also set the start of those 15 minutes by pressing the share button? So it is actually either the last 15 minutes, or the next 15, depending on how you do it?

Hey guys, is anyone else recording video that has no sound? I mean this is probably default but I assumed that it would record video w/audio. I'm recording BF4 by the way.

Giantbomb discovered how to do that yesterday

yup that's what I thought...I guess you need to log in to a facebook account or something, because I do not get that screen Jeff got where it shows edit...and it shows his facebook stuff.

is Sony trying to get me to link my Facebook account to the system? They have been trying since last gen...

I believe the first thing the PS4 explains to you when you first turn it on is that when you press share you can upload your last 15 mintues of gameplay.

How so many missed that message I don't know.

Definitely sounds more like user error than the PS4 not doing what it was doing.

ps4 videos are not currently archiving even if you have it turned on.

Bummer....will be cool when they do archive though.

No it does not always record the last 15 minutes, that is the problem. You can make sure it records the next 15 minutes though.

I logged in with Facebook immediately so I don't know if that matters. There should be an edit option after you've pressed the share button (which basically sets a stopping point), go to "uploaded clips" and press X on any clip that's been saved and there's an "edit" button. It'll open a different application for the editing process if you're currently in a game.

whoops, I'm late.

So wait can you edit the video and have it stored to the hard drive or is the only way you can edit is by actually uploading it?
