How has the console racing game drought affected you?

I don't play console games half as much as I used too a few years ago, forza 4, WRC 2 and DiRT 3 complete are enough for now, plus I still have F1 2011 on pc to play more then a few hours of, I loved 2010 but all the bugs pissed me off with 2011.

I love my racing games and if I were to play them as much as I used too I would probably be going back to old games I missed the first time like Race pro and Shift 2 though I dislike the handling in that game so much.

pCARS and CTR are keeping me busy for the moment until F1 2012 hits.

I want something new to come through (akin to Motorstorm in '06). DiRT is getting old.

New TOCA game, maybe? GRID 2?

There have been many great racing games this generation: Forza, GT5, GRID, Dirt, F1 201X, NfS:MW, NfS:HP, Motorstorm, Blur, Split Second, Wipeout,...

I like racing games, but I need more of them even less than I need more shooters. Shooters at least usually deliver a new campaign and story and their singleplayer portions are relatively short. Each racing game usually offers endless tournaments, offers no story and quite often the same cars.

There has been a big ass hole in my heart ever since the gamecube days(F-zero and Wave Race). Racing is pretty much over for me now that Project Gotham is dead.

Mario Kart and Wipeout are fun, I guess.

The lack of good F1 and rally games has been pretty shitty, other than that I think we've been well catered for this gen. I have these console racers on rotation so I'm happy.

For arcade racers it's been pretty terrible imo because so many devs are missing the basics. Maybe I'm being too picky though, I would love any recommendations if people would like. My favorite racers have been the Ridge Racer games this gen and I've been playing them since launch on PSP all the way thru to 3DS so it's long been old, but I feel like there's really nothing else to pick from. I did like the Motorstorm games, but each entry I feel has been progressively worse imo. NFS:HP would have been great, but there are no circuits. I have had fun with competing for times on Autolog, but I feel the game would have had much longer legs if there were circuits and they would have let you connect the intersections on your own. I've been meaning to check out Mad Riders on Steam which looks like a lot of fun.

Drought?

I don't rink I've ever seen more racing games than this gen.

That's even if you don't include kart racers. What's wrong with you people?

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift is unarguably better than the first game in every way, so is Apocalypse. (though, whether you prefer Apocalypse over Pacific Rift or the other way around is up for a debate/preference)

And I've got to ask, what drought? Maybe it's just that I play games from so many genres, but I haven't really had any racing game droughts and I feel like there have even been too many of them, since I haven't even played half of the racing games i would've wanted to.

One pleasant surprise this gen was Hydro Thunder Hurricane on XBLA. I highly recommend it, great arcade racing action, no silly weapons or power ups (well, there are boost canisters) and some fun wave physics.

Oh yes, I almost forget about this. Actually the whole series is awesome! Check it out at your local arcade (if there is still one in your town).

The first two are undoubtedly the best imo, but while PR made a lot of improvements, it also lost a lot of what made the first one so good.

This is your new F-Zero. The franchise has been relegated to a single mini-game in Nintendoland. It is down somewhere with 1080 and Wave Race at this point.

The fact that it gets a mini-game in Nintendoland can only be a good omen as far as future games go, because it means they still see it as live franchise. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Monster are currently working on an F-Zero for 3DS to be released next year, although a true sequel to GX on Wii U is probably too much to expect at this stage.

Driver is more than a racing game.

It is Smokey And The Bandit, Blues Brothers, and Geist all rolled into a 60fps sandwich.

I will buy the next Reflections game and the next Criterion game. That's how I deal with racing game droughts.

I really would like a new classic burnout like 3.

A new F-Zero like GX would have made me re-purchase a Wii. A new F-Zero launchgame from Sega would have made me purchase a Wii-U at launch probably.

A new Wave Race would be cool, there are not many games that give you that great feeling of hitting the waves.

Just Dance 4? Far Cry 3? Watch Dogs?

It's sad that literally all of Reflections was let go after Driver SF so we won't see another one. They're just a port house now.

But they weren't. The creative director's still there and several other key employees.

I liked that gamecube game where people rode around on futuristic motorcycles, other then that I only play mario kart. Anyone remember the name of that game?

Mario kart still comes out at the same pace as ever. f-zero and wave race currently floating in limbo does make me sad. Other than that I don't care.

It's really a bummer.
Maybe, but it's also an opportunity to reacquaint with and develop an even deeper appreciation of some old classics and maybe try out some new stuff that lies on the fringe of your interest. Personally, I've got quite a few games that I bought that never saw much play time after all, so I'm giving them a more vigorous effort during the slow times.

The speed must look sickening awesome on the XLs big screen.

That's my logic; it's probably the one Nintendo franchise which would show off the 3D effect the best. Monster also seem perfectly suited, as they're normally a racing studio and have experience on the 3DS (an early-to-mid 2013 release would also give them a reasonable 20-24 months development time).

How do you explain this?

Ubisoft's Reflections studio in Newcastle is collaborating with Ubisoft Montreal on the company's new IP, Watch Dogs.

"Reflections has been attentively watching the reaction to Watch Dogs at E3," said GM Giselle Stewart.

"The studio is very excited to be working with Ubisoft Montreal on this new IP, and is currently expanding its Newcastle-based team for the title. We have openings available for talented Creative Directors, Senior Gameplay Programmers and experienced GUI Artists."

There have been a lot of racing games this generation, but a lot of them have been disappointing. The Dirt series is now shit, there are no more rally titles, most of the games people keep praising are mediocre at best. The only standouts this gen are Wipeout HD/Fury, a couple of the Motorstorms, and maybe the first Dirt. Forza 3 and 4 are beautiful, but Turn 10 forgot to include the fun. Burnout Paradise was alright, but the open world thing killed the racing.

It's been a horrible generation for racing games.

NFS Hot Pursuit, Driver San Francisco and Midnight Club Los Angeles are better arcade racers than any of the Motorstorm games.

I agree about the open world aspect of Burnout Paradise killing the actual racing, though. I really regret spending $40 for the Steam version of that in 2008 before I got either of the HD consoles.

I have basically stopped playing racing games. Honestly I don't know if this is because of the drought or if I just stopped enjoying them. Forza 3 was the last racing game I really played. And I bought a couple of the NFS / Burnout / etc games since then but just hardly played them.

Last gen and before, I would have considered racing games as one of my favorite genres... like I would have put it up there with anything else. Now... eh.

I've put about 140 hours into Forza 4 (just the racing alone) since March.

This is off the back of probably 300 hours in Gran Turismo 5 since launch.

Drought?
Especially now with Forza 4, the incredible community, the range of cars and the DLC every month, I can't keep up with it anyway.

what drought? There's so many of these that I'm sick of the genre. See also fighting.

the saminess of the games.

/snore

There have been a lot, but they're also sub-par. NFS:HP was the last good arcade racer and even it had some pretty disappointing aspects to it. It's developers have forgotten the basics of what makes a good racer.
