How has the console racing game drought affected you?

Not effecting me at all. Switching off between Burnout Paradise (still loads of fun to play with friends), MotorStorm Pacific Rift, WipEout, Split/Second local multiplayer, and Shift 2 which was so graciously gifted to me by PS+. Getting tons of value out of these and come Fall Most Wanted 2 will have me set for a long time.

There's a console racing game drought? No-one told me.

F-Zero UX! Although unless Nagoshi is involved, I don't hold out much hope for the series.

X was pretty amazing though. Either way, I don't see how ideas for a new F-Zero game would be hard to come up with. Everything it needs (online, track editor, etc...) is super-obvious. Just design good tracks.

Time was a man could buy a new racing game almost every month. Sure, there may be some months limited to a Tokyo Extreme Racer spinoff or NFS Underground clone, but that was ok.

What have we had this year? Forza DLC, Ridge Racer Unbounded, and Dirt Showdown (which is more of a demolition derby game with a little racing thrown in.) Test Drive: Ferrari Legends is scheduled to release in early July but it has already been pushed back several times. After that, it will be a long, hot summer of waiting until the new F1 game. Every racer GOTY award will by default be awarded to NFS: Most Wanted. It's really a bummer.

What are you looking for in a racer that can't be achieved with something that is currently on the market?

GT5 and Forza, Burnout Paradise, Need for Speed, Shift, Motorstorm....

Seriously, if what you're saying is true then there were definitely too many racing games flooding the market the past 10 years. Hell, I'd have loved to seen two decent space combat sims in a YEAR on an annual basis.

The racing genre is fine. Online play and DLC keep games fresh.

Quoting the OP with some selective bolding, because people seem to have a hard time understanding what is being discussed here.

OP is not saying there have been no good racing games this generation. He's saying we only get a few decent racing games a year now. Compare to other genres like FPS's, it is a fact that we don't get as consistent a flow of new racing games as we used to. Especially earlier this generation and last generation.

I'm not trying to be get assed up but people are seriously missing the point here. (OP if I'm mischaracterizing your post tell me.)

People understand what he's saying, and his question is how has it affected you. Common answer seems to be that it hasn't affected many at all since we don't need a new racer every month since we get quality racers that last us much longer.

Rally? And, no, the XTREME bullshit in DiRT doesn't count.
The frustrating thing about the Dirt games for me is that when they do the rally part, it feels so right. Unfortunately, it's such a tiny part of the game now.

For rally fans this gen, all we've had on console is a sample of it in Dirt, and Sega Rally Revo. What the hell is up with Codemasters this gen?

I didn't completely hate dirt 3 up until the gymkhana events. I felt like headbutting the screen after that shit. I also hear the WRC games are complete dogshit which sucks. I do not have high hopes for Dirt 4.

Also, does any recent game come close to PGR goodness? I had to re-buy PGR4 because I missed its excellence.

Gran Turismo, 3 awesome Motorstorms, 2 Wipeouts + at least decent Dirt 2, i'm more than ok.

I agree on the genre stopping from being mainstream this generation, however.

Well the story is with all the BS out of the way in Dirt Showdown, Dirt 4 is going to be a proper rally game. I have high hopes. The lead designer of the game is a rally co-driver in real life.

Dirt 1 had a huge rally portion, it's fair to say that's the bulk of the game. Unfortunetly it got chipped away quite a bit with 2 and 3.

The big budget games with hundreds of hours of content have their place, but I miss the chance to try out something new to discover a fun handling model, hear new music, and try out new courses. DLC helps some, but grinding endless event lists gets old to me. I want a fresh take built by a different developer with a completely different outlook.

Yeah I mean in generations past we had crazy and weird racers coming out all the time, games like Rollcage and Kinetica. Now seems like only the big names are left, all the experiments have died out due to poor sales (Blur, Pure, Split Second etc).

I wish they would make another version of this on current gen consoles.

Do it Sony.

I guess it´s just a really hard time for console racing because the casual shit doesn´t sell a lot and we are overly dependent on two franchises (GT and Forza).

Another problem to that is that simulation on consoles is always pushed back because it has to be acessible. So even the most console lover like i am has to find a way to get into some PC sims because some things we have overthere will never come to consoles.

I think the industry as whole has to come with a solution or this. Like the OP, i remember the good ol´days in which i had 5-6 racing series that i bought regularly and now these games just changed or died.

For a while it was like this:

Huge GT release
Colin McRae
Need for Speed game
Toca Race Driver
Formula 1 game
Huge GT release

Now we have even greater waiting times between GT games and all the other franchises i just mentioned turned into shit (translation = they went casual and cater to a different crowd).

I really miss those days and specially the PSone days were you could buy racing games out of nowhere like Newman Haas racing and Advan Racing and get enjoyment out of those forgotten gems.

I'm sort of getting used to play less racing games.
I love them but I am picky anyways. Arcade racers have been extremely disappointing for me this gen (only liked and bought the Motorstorm series) and in matter of serious racing games, only Dirt 2,3 and GT5 attracted me. I tried Forza 3 (well, actually bought it) and fell asleep before my screen.

Add to this that there's no new F-Zero, no good water racing ala Waverace. No new Outrun likes. It's the fucking desert, arcade racers sucks.

I'd love a circuit based Burnout again, but I have a feeling the Burnout franchise is dead, sadly.

Shift 2 is all I need. Just wish it had better graphics on PS3; but aside from that, I have no need for another racer. Pushes all my buttons and has never fallen out of my rotation since I bought it.
Shift 2 was the only 3D game I've ever played, and I was incredibly impressed.

I'd say the 3D worked better than any 3D film I've seen.
