How is "bass" pronounced, or why does Creative pronounce it as "base"?

Bass is pronounced like "base". Bass the fish is pronounced like sass. Which my contribution to this thread clearly does not have enough of given the OP's question.

Yeah, when speaking about the frequency range, it is pronounced bass. When speaking about the fish, it is pronounced as it is spelled 'dat bass.'

Solder and colonel are way worse.

It's confusing, but I think pronouncing it 'base' is generally accepted.

II'm not sure about treble. I've heard 'treb-el' and 'tree-bol' and am not so sure which is right

One of my closest friends in high school would make subwoofer sounds whenever he picked Bass in Dead or Alive 2. I found this absolutely hilarious.

I actually had an argument with my English teacher in HS about this, she thought it was prounounced "bass" instead of "base." Felt so good to be right.

Another shining example of english being stupid.

If these here United States of America ever capitulated to conservative voices pushing for an official language, I'm hoping it's español.

Actually, is there some reason for the different pronunciations that someone here knows? Some weird etymological quirk?

I think the origin of the word goes straight back to Latin. I assume the pronounciation changed over time, but the way the word's being written didn't.

English is a terrible language. lol

It's just so inconsistent. If you look at the letters of a word, you can't really infer what it's pronounced like. Especially with surnames.

Yeah, I believe that's the case. Bass (the instrument) has roots in Italian and Latin and bass (the fish) has roots in old English and German. The words somehow converged on the same spelling but are pronounced differently and mean different things.
