How is GAF feeling about the Rachet & Clank movie?

I don't like Drek's voice. It's not as evil as the original. He sounds more like an annoying bumbling sidekick not an evil mastermind.

There's LOTS of marketing for it, just hitting kids/families/moms.

Yep. In addition to the standard press screenings, Sony/Focus (not sure which) flew out a number of mommy bloggers to LA for a junket.

Looks like it could go either way.

The best part of the trailer was the Kick Some Asteroid line.

I'm curious to the reviews, is what I can say.

Embargo on reviews is closer to release of the film.

I could see it doing ok if it gets decent reviews and families flock to see it now that Zootopia is finally winding down its theatre run. I don't think there are any other major animated kids movies coming out soon.

All the kids where I teach are talking about Jungle Book, I haven't heard one peep about R&C.

I hope it's good, Ratchet and Clank accidentally became one of my favorite game franchises.

I want to see it but I don't want to be the only person in the theater

I'm feeling that it'll be a fine movie but will do nothing at the box office and i'll get the bluray for cheap on release week

I understand that nickelodeon has had a lot of commercials for it

I liked Future: Tools of Destruction...and that's about it.

The characters are pretty funny though, so hopefully the humor is translated well enough into the movie. If that's the case, and the reviews turn out okay, I'll definitely check it out.

We need a decent video game movie every now and then.

Don't know where the "there's no marketing" angle is coming from, because, from what I've seen, ads have been playing regularly on the kids' networks for the past couple of weeks.

I don't think it'll tank perse because I can't imagine the budget is too high. I think only made this knowing it would be an easy cash in while potentially expanding the brand.

What makes you say that? There's a lot of big names doing voice work for it and it's very pretty. Nothing about it seems low-budget to me from what I've seen.

I dunno. I'm hopeful, but since a movie seems a bit more risky I'm worried they'll throw in a bunch of the weird humour you see in modern kids animation for wider appeal.

If it's closely aligned with the writing in the game I think it'll be pretty good.

If the scenes in the games are anything to go by it's very much the same tone as the humor in the games. IIRC the guy who writes the games did the screenplay.

The movie will be a huge bomb. There's been next to no marketing for it.

.

How many of y'all regularly watch kids networks? IIRC they picked up a fairly large ad buy across CN and Nick which are the two biggies. Still also two weeks until release. No crap they aren't going to market in places adults see because that's not really who the movie is for.

I'll be at the theater OW. Love the franchise and really hope the movie does well.

I always thought the games were aimed at a slightly older audience.
They never seemed like kids games per se.

Adults are the ones who buy the tickets... I saw ads for Inside Out, Zootopia, Kung Fu Panda 3, The Secret Life of Pets, etc... all over the place. I wouldn't have even heard of this film if I wasn't already a R&C fan.

Not crazy about the trailer(very flat but may just be the trailer cut) but I want it to be good. Planning to see it with the wife.

I can't imagine many teenagers who aren't really into games picking them off a shelf. I've definitely always seen them as kids/ family games.

The PS2 games before Future were all rated Teen in America. Mind you, this was before the E10+ rating was implemented, and when they were re-released for the PS3, they were re-rated as E10+. Regardless, the Ratchet series was bound to be associated with being for older gamers simply from having a Teen rating.

Anecdotally I was one of those gamers; I wasn't a teen when the first Ratchet was released and my parents were somewhat rating-conscious when it came to games. While I saw the furry protagonist and Teen rating to be at odds with each other, the Teen rating said to me that Ratchet wasn't a game for kids.

It's a great game, I'm really enjoying it. But the script and characters are no better than they were in the very first Ratchet and Clank game.

Several posters in the OT are stating the new origin story is far worse this time around. :/

The trailers are... okay? They look bad in the way all animated movie trailers are bad (even Pixar), but there's enough there that makes me think it at least might be alright.

Definitely expecting it to mega-tank, though.

its about 10 years late, no?

...

anyway, ive only played the later games. why does nefarious look like this?

instead of this?

The vibe of the remake is very kid centric. Remember how Ratchet was a complete asshole in the first one? Not anymore.

Game's much brighter than I remember too. Definitely feels more playful.

It's a reboot, so characters can change drastically. Also, maybe he will (pure supposition, don't have the game yet and I will watch the movie in few days) become a robot later.

It's not necessarily that its worse, it's just rushed they spend like 2 seconds on the origin story then it's back to business as usual. Probably because they knew a lot of the people playing wouldn't be new to the series.

i feel like it's gonna flop because

it's releasing a week right before cap3 and

i've BARELY seen or heard any advertisement for the thing

Jungle Book might be getting their money instead, though.

Opening against Keanu for adults and having to continue to fight family-friendly Jungle Book while having barely any marketing itself is basically a death sentence.

I'm agnostic towards the series since I haven't played any of them, but this movie is going to tank this weekend.

I'm actually really worried about it.

If the PS4 game is any indication, they really, really stripped the characters of any growth and development that you really need to keep someone's attention for 90 minutes. Ratchet and Clank are so immediately chummy from the get go, that their existence as a duo is simply uninteresting as fuck.

The game (and in estimation the film) should have focused on Ratchet and Clank's relationship and how they came to trust and depend on each other. The end game could have been the Galactic Rangers recruiting Ratchet and setting up what's to come in the future of the franchise.

Again, this is only based on the impressions from the game, which I understand is only flashing broad strokes of the events of the film. I'll hold my judgement until I see it.

The rotten review is nonsense but it is to be expected from people who don't understand the humour.

He gave the same score to deadpool
