How is Streets of Rage 4 so good GAF?

Got it a while ago with DLC

Player 25 minutes according to Steam. Definitely didn't leave a good impression lol

Even though Absolum was based around replayability, I found SoR4 infinitely more replayable, and enjoyable to play over and over. The variety of moves you can pick and choose from, the roguelike mode is great too. I think behind Guardian Heroes, SoR4 is the best beat 'em up.

Didn't feel like that. I appretiate alot the visuals and the pacing, but ultimatelly the game abuses alot on endless combos that heavy favors multiple players. Also giving invincibily frames to enemies isn't from my liking. Great game but it has its shortcomings.

lol you like the genre?
I want to like it. I got it because it was recommended after I played a bunch of Shredder's Revenge

I remember seeing the combos (maybe in the tutorial) in Streets of Rage 4 and completely zoned out

Who knows, though. Topics like this sometimes convince me to give it another shot

Give it another try my dude. It is so fun

Very bad game for me. Defense was too strong, too much option select and shortcuts, damage reduction was too strong and some strings were too hard to master for barely anything more.

SF6 is far better

EDIT : My bad, I read the title too fast, thought OP was talking about Street Fighter 4 -_-

Sometimes it all comes because of the heavy inconsistency with characters.
Like, Axel feels alot sluggish simply because something went on the devs head that he shouldn't run or dash.
I only notice that because I play with Adam and my brother plays with Axel. I decide to quit playing Adam because of that, while enemies on the other hand abuse this very factor alot. Devs failed miserably at that aspect.

Although Streets of Rage 4 is great, I think Absolum was a turning point when it comes to beat 'em ups. Yes, it's a roguelite, but I feel like it's the evolution the beat 'em up genre needed. If you haven't played it, I recommend playing it with someone—playing it alone just isn't the same.

I played it solo and with my brother, like I said the gameplay mechanics might be more deep but I find SOR4 to be the better game.

Have to pull from multiple people and not Koshiro riffing on DnB bangers of the late 80s is not a flex. First track is dead ass an overproduced remix.
Multiple people did the soundtrack, but it's still curated by one person. That's pretty standard stuff. The first track is supposed to be a remix lol. The rest are still massive bangers. So, you didn't really address those, other than the fact that they're by different people.

SoR4 threads are always fun because I can tell the people who never actually played the game beyond one or two levels. It's embarrassing.

It was free on PS+. I'd play it again but I don't rate the music.

Honestly it is so good, it did the unthinkable: dethroned sor remake

Mania plus isn't perfect tho. Needed a bit of refining.

Definitely not as good as 1 or 2, especially musically. Koshiro's OST is a staple of the series (and a huge part of the experience) and 4's soundtrack was forgettable as fuck. Meanwhile music from 1 & 2 is burned into my brain for eternity.

I think it's a fine beat em up, just a shitty SOR game. I didn't think anything could be worse than 3 but they did it.

It's a great game. It's a shame they fumbled on Absolum.

For those who Enjoy SoR4 and want some more beat em ups with a different flavor I recommend:

Fight'N Rage is its own beast with innovative grappling and jump kicking mechanics. It also has a similar parry system to Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike as its core mechanic! Very cool game that stands on its own.

Final Vendetta is more kin to Streets of Rage 3 and Final Fight. More old school in its mechanics but a very well made beat em up.

Backstreet Warriors is by the same developer as Fight'N Rage. It has the same core parry mechanic but is basically a one screen game with a limited enemy count that you can beat in one combo if you are good enough. It's a score attack game with a more minimalistic feel. It still has a surprising amount of depth for those interested to delve deeper into high scores.

Best modern 2D BTA by far, and I love the genre. It nailed everything in the gameplay department, including one aspect that is essential and often lost in recent games : the instantaneity of hits. When you press a button, the hit goes off immediately. A lot of (pixel art) games have overly detailed animation and this makes it awful because hitboxes become vague and the game is not as responsive as it could be. SoR4 has just the right steps of animation so everything goes fast and as you would expect it, as if it was a BTA or 2D fighter from the 90s.

The game relies too much on combos and juggles though, not a fan of this. But everything else is fantastic, visuals and music included.

Another great pick is Battletoads. Highly recommended. It does have a lot of dumb scenes and it is not only about fighting, but the game is really excellent.

Personally I think the campaign is too long in SoR4. I've found it more enjoyable to play and learn a single level at a time and go for a high score per level.

Guard Crush games spent years creating an engine that heavily mimicked Streets of Rage with his game Streets of Fury EX.

Matching him up with LizardCube and his art turned out to be a winning combination since they both loved the IP.

Mix bag for me. They turned a beat up into a street fighter combo system with imo ruined the entire game. Not to mention this 'lost health' mechanic is annoying.

It was alright, it's not a game I'd lose sleep over. But I really haven't enjoyed too many beat em ups lately. Dragons Crown, the Dungeons and Dragons games were perfect to me.

It is the best beat em up game ever. Only thing missing is 4 player online. But at least it has 2 online which is more than you can say for most of the games in the genre. I make sure to skip all beat em up games that don't include online coop since I'm not longer in grade school and my friends don't come over to my house to play video games anymore.

Fight N Rage is extremely highly rated, but I much prefer playing these games with other people, so it gets a pass.

It's a shame TMNT Shredder's Revenge didn't feel as good to play as Streets of Rage 4, that one had 6 player coop. Fun game just doesn't have the same oomph.

Can't really comprehend the diss against the ost. It's amazing, already posted but deserves a repost 'cause it's so fucking good.

The elevator ride is the best part.
Olivier Deriviere was reminded enough of this to upload and extend it.

I actually got chills when I first played it, got instant 80s vibes, felt like a kid again for a bit lol.

Rising Up is definitely the trademark song for the game for me. The rest of the OST also has terrific pacing.

Yeah it's pretty fun but I don't keep coming back to it like I do with the first game in the series. I never get tired of that one. Everything is so memorable, especially the music.
