Btw, in MKWii it was too easy to counter the blue shell by using a red mushroom at the right time, can it be done on MK8 (haven't had a chance to try it) or you can only count on the horn?

When hardcore gamers understand that skill=win is not fun for the majority of people and that's it's ok to lose sometimes even if you played better then maybe they'll start to enjoy Mario Kart. Till then, I'll just say it's not exactly gran turismo
All they need to do is remove the hovering and explosion when it reaches the 1st place racer. It was perfect in N64 and DD when you could actually avoid it if it smacked into walls or if you power-slided properly.
MK8 has the least threatening blue shells that I can remember since the DS version. Beyond that, it's typically people in the middle of the pack that get them, not those all the way behind. Since it travels on the ground, yes, it can typically help these players as it can hit everyone ahead of them.

I've been first for a few races in a row because of no blue shell and I can tell you it's quite boring. Everyone in the middle of the pack gets severely item-raped, while #1 only has #2's occasional shells to deal with. And if you have defence, you're pretty much set for a dull race.
I was thinking about this after a few games last night. I get totally screwed over more when in 2nd or 3rd place than I ever do when in first. Getting blasted on the last corner of the last lap by two or three items in a row and dropping from 2nd to 7th is a regular occurrence. Remember that people behind you are probably getting wrecked more than you are.
