How is touching another person hair considered racist?

is anyone trying to touch a white person's hair

In highschool when I grew my hair out long (longer now), a couple of girls asked if they could touch my hair. Didn't get a lot of attention then so I welcomed it.
And one time, in an English class, a Chinese exchange student and friend of mine rustled my hair without asking. It surprised me, as she was a pretty reserved person. Definitely out of character. Again, though, lonely and welcomed any attention I could get.

People should ask first though, and they should probably be friends before asking at all.

I mean unless you are trying to get with this girl why exactly do you want to feel her hair?

If you want to just ask and go ahead. I have to say the thought to touch someone's hair when I'm not interested in them has never crossed my mind

Yes, you can ask to touch her hair. She made where the boundaries lie quite clear by asking/initiating. It would be a different scenario if this were some random person.

Friday night chuckles.

You posting ancient artifacts seem like it would support that those ancient olive colored individuals with coarse hair would have hairstyles that would protect their hair, especially if they were within the warrior caste. Or does that region and time period not include these type of individuals.
Well Near Eastern hair has a large amount of variation. It isn't particularly coarse (in general) it is somewhat naturally curly.
The ancient Spartans and Assyrians were well known for these sorts of hairstyles which is what I was referring to by the warriors (it's likely that the poorer men simply shaved their heads but royalty and warriors had much more elaborate hairstyles).

Naturally curly haired individuals still use these protective hairstyles. So from our knowledge of Near Eastern hair it sounds like these hairstyles could have been used for protection.

Their is no appropriate time to invade a complete strangers space because you're entranced by their hair but you don't have enough sense to keep it to yourself.

She asks me every single time if she can touch my hair and today began to braid it. My natural response was to reach out and touch her hair, but I understand some people do not want to feel like a pet and etc. Those ideals I've heard is preventing me from just being comfortable because I do not want to make someone feel odd. Just looking for advice. I am not someone that walks up and starts grabbing breasts and such.

It's okay. I don't view it as racist in every occasion. I'll give you an example of my mother and her colleagues. They ask to touch her hair and then laugh that it's like a brillo pad or that she got an electrical shock.

Touching hair between friends, kids or family is good. It all depends. I don't mind when people do it to me, as long as you're not using a brush and ask good questions.
