How is Wii U going to do in 2013?

All of the EA sports games were big steps up graphically.

You mean like this? LOL.

And Madden 06 was lacking features that the PS2 version had.

Honestly not trolling, but why do people think early PS3 ports of PS2/original-Xbox games looked and played worse? Because they definitely did not. Worse than Xbox360, mostly yeah, but not ps2/xbox1.

Remember, we are comparing 2012 WiiU to 2006 Ps360, not 2012WiiU to 2013 Ps720.
I wasn't, I was comparing 360 ports in both cases. I think it's obvious by now that Wii U is a minor (if that) step up from PS360 tech wise.

That's not what I remember. Kameo was clearly significantly ahead of anything on PS2/Xbox/GC.

The Xbox 1.5 thing was because of rumors of PS3 being so much more powerful than Xbox 360 that it would make it appear only a half of a generation leap. That didn't turn out to be the case.

Some games featured noticably improved animations, higher polycount and textures while others were mixed bag due to being current-gen ports with framerate issues. I recall some graphics of early Xbox 360 suffering from a vaseline-like appearance as well.

No.

Even though Madden didn't end up looking like that, it was still a big step up from how it looked on the PS2. Same was true for just about every EA sports game (especially Fight Night).

And Madden 06 was lacking features that the PS2 version had.

Yes, but I was never talking about the gameplay features.

But guys the thing is .. you need just one! One thing to impress, or make people hope. 360 had gears of war demo since the beginning if i recall well. PS3 had demos to, even the naughty dogs one. 3ds had the resident evil demo to show us it wasn't a 3d psp.

WiiU would need only one slight cross generation show off. I don't know, watch dogs, a capcom or SE game with cool shaders, something. When you have nothing to show, people wonder.

There were a few that were (like GUN or Tony Hawk) but the majority of them were big steps up graphically.

All of the EA sports games were big steps up graphically. PGR 3's in car view was a big step up graphically. Call of Duty 2 was a big step up as well.

I honestly don't understand where you are coming from. There were many good looking games.

Heh, the same could be said for you.

Again, there were many good looking games. How could you say that there weren't when many early 360 games ended up going on to the PS3 as well?

Do you feel that the PS3 didn't look "next gen" early on either?

You were easily impressed then cause I remember Madden 06 having serious issues graphically. PGR3 wasnt a big difference compared to PGR2. it was just had a higher resolution. Call of Duty 2 impressed me a bit with everything it was doing on screen. A lot was happening but graphically it was ok.

PS3 launch titles were just about the same as well, but I wasnt paying that much attention to it cause that $599.99 label was scaring me away.

Xbox 360 didnt impress me untill Gears of War was released. The 1.5 label happened for a reason.

Q2 2013
Dragon Quest X Online: Rise of the Five Tribes (Square Enix)

I'm pretty sure we will never see this localized. Obviously there is no interest for DQ games in the west and there never will be. Last two games sold terrible and with its very hard localization (it's an MMO game after all) DQX will stay Japan exclusive.

Even in GAF there's not enough DQ love.

It wasn't my intent to spread doom and gloom but rather hope. It would be great if Wii U continues to get new CODS but honestly I'll probably get the best looking version on PS4. I really do hope Japanese RPGS devs embrace the Wii U though; they can't compete in the Super HD arms race but I can see them really shining on hardware with lower dev costs like Wii U.

Sorry really didn't mean that for you.

It was really for the thread as a hole.

Aliens
Pikmin 3
Wonderful 101
Rayman Legends
Lego City
Wii Fit U
Game and wario
Monster Hunter 3U And if you want to include Japan? Add DQX
Need for speed most wanted
The DC fighting game
F1 race stars
Awful line-up, especially considering none of it will have that next-gen wow factor. Even if you throw in a Mario Kart U and Mario World U for the Fall, still a terrible line-up.

Dragon quest 9 did not sell terrible

Despite being mediocre gameplay wise Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero were mind blowing at the time. Everything else aside from DOA4 though really felt like Xbox 1.5 to me but I didn't have an HDTV at the time.

So sad but then again I really just want a traditional DQ or port of VIII in HD for Wii U or PS3. How did the DS remakes do?

whatever holiday title(s) they're planning are obviously missing from the list. Mario World U, Retro Studio's Presents Metroid, whatever. Smash Bros, also.

As of now, the Wii U's big games for the first half of 2013 are Rayman Legends, Lego City Stories, Game and Wario, Pikmin 3, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Wii Fit U, and maybe the Wonderful 101. This isn't a bad list of exclusives, but sales wise, how is this going to fair in the North American market? Outside of Lego City Stories and maybe Wii Fit U, the lineup seems ill fit for the western market.

I think there a few other notable titles that are big budget.
Aliens: Colonial Marines, for example.

But instead of worrying what Nintendo is not going to get from third parties.
Why not look at what it is getting from third parties. What is Nintendo's strategy?

Nintendo has a strong 1st Party line-up. I suppose we can expect 2 big games a year from them. They get decent 2nd party games. So what about third parties? WiiU has already gotten some multi-plats. But I dont think this is where Nintendo is placing their focus on.

What Im seeing is that Nintendo is working hard to get third party exclusives.
Like Bayonetta 2, Monster Hunter, etc. Nintendo want to differentiate themselves from the competition as much as possible. Thats why their online service is different, and their controller, etc.

Therefore, what people have to ask themselves is: what's more interesting, Nintendo's third party exclusives, or, the multi-platform games that the WiiU might or might not be getting?

Because how compelling have the third party multi-plats been the last few years? Was Assassin's Creed 3 a great title? Did the last Call of Duty do as good as the previous title? And what about Darksider's 2, Ninja Gaiden 3, or even Resident Evil 6- that has not appeared on the WiiU? And I'm not hearing to many nice things about Tomb Raider, or the next Bioshock. It would be great for Nintendo to get all those titles, but I think exclusive third party titles, designed with the controllers in mind and miiverse, will go a longer way then the multi-plats.

There will be (at least some) big games from 3rd parties too

Tomb Raider looks like a good bet. Not sure what else...

We already know it's not getting these games from the first half of 2013:
Crysis 3
Bioshock
South Park
Dead Space 3
Metal Gear Revengeance (terrible name by the way lol)
Splinter Cell Blacklist
Fuse
Grand Theft Auto V

And this is just from the first half of the year, off the top of my dead. It doesn't bode well for the second half.

The 2nd half of next year is going to be Durango/Orbis anyway. Notice how the schedule looks for next year? There is nothing big announced outside of Ground Zeroes that will hit after summer.

Those games alone are better than the entire Wii U lineup.

There's been hints about blacklist and gta5 is a maybe later

It is getting Blacklist, it's just not official yet. It's also probably getting Lost Planet 3, a Deca Sports game and some other late ports from 2012 (RE6, PES2013).

Are you talking about a 3D Mario? Because that seems like the game that would most likely have the wow-factor you're talking about.

Nope, Xbox 360 launch titles were really bad graphically. Xbox 360 was being labelled Xbox 1.5 cause they really didnt look next gen. They were OG Xbox games with a few more bells and whistles. PS2 had nothing to do with why everyone thought PS3 graphically would stomp all over 360. It was the weak ass launch games and the previous year Sony showed off that infamous Killzone video.

Love the selective memory some of you guys have. lol
Those were people falling for Sony's marketing bullshit.

Please, show me an XBOX game that looks as good as PGR3.

Bad. Both Dragon Quest VI and DQMJ2 sold very poorly, and by the looks of it, they're the main reason Nintendo still haven't announced Rocket Slime 3 and Terry's Wonderland localizations yet.

it's been confirmed that GTA V isn't coming to Wii U?
Rockstar's offical line is they're taking a "wait and see" approach, which isn't encoraging. The original Cafe 01net rumors in 2011 claimed GTAV was Wii U bound, and basically everything else the same source leaked ended up being true, so there's a slight chance something may be happening behind the scenes. I don't think it's particularly likely though at this point.

You know, every time I look at Wii U's reaction and then this assumption that the next Sony and Microsoft systems are magically going to be so powerful, at a mass market price, without killing 3rd party developers with rising development costs, and proving tons of innovation with the same ole same ole games, I feel like I need to get a couple of barrels of popcorn for 2013. Hopes and wishes
It doesnt have to be magic. More powerful hardware already excist, so that is no hurdle. One of the things that drives up the WiiU costs is the controller. It is possible that PS4/Xbox 720 will use a standard controller, that will save money that can be used on console hardware. The price might be $400 - $500, meaning more money could be used on more powerful hardware. Maybe Microsoft and Sony are willing to take a smaller loss on the hardware as well.

Killing 3rd party developers and innvation is not something you will see in 2013. The "same ole games" is something that applies to every system. Most of the innovation has to happen on the software side.

Xbox 1.5 came about because the jump wasn't quite as large as some folks expected initially.

I'm willing to bet a LOT of that was because many people didn't have or had shit HDTVs. I personally was blown away and thought most games were significantly more impressive than anything the previous gen. I also had a Sony Wega Hiscan HDTV CRT.

But the majority of those games were big steps up from the previous gen. Nothing on the Wii U now and even from the looks of how things will be in 2013 (so far) will make someone feel as if they are missing out if they keep playing on their 360 and/or PS3.

If anything, as of now, a lot of the last wave of titles for PS360 coming out before the next gen (and there are dozens of them), are not coming out to Wii U. That is very scary, because you have to wonder, if it isn't getting the multiplats now, will it get them next gen?

Yep, Xbox 360 was powerful at launch. I remember it edging out my 2003 PC, which had:
Pentium 4 at 3.6 GHz
6800 Ultra overclocked
2 GB RAM
Audigy 2 ZS

I think 360 ended up being about 2x faster than that PC.

I used my 360 at first with my PC monitor because I didn't have an HDTV yet.

I still think Pirate Slime could be a great eShop only release. It's totally the sort of thing I could see doing well digital and lower priced.

I agree DQMJ2 probably put a damper on TW3D making it, but I think DQIV/V/VI might have less bearing on DQVII given the scale of the remakes (largely 2D vs 3D). In terms of presentation, DQVII is really a bit more like DQIX, and that game was a million seller in the west for Nintendo.

It's not impossible for consoles to be 10x 360/PS3. No magic about Moore's law. However with Sony's debt and Microsoft's COGS for a streaming box, I think we'll see 5x.

Hell, maybe we'll be surprised because...
7 years/1.5 years to double = 4.667
2^4.667=25

So even if they cheap out and break even per system, 10x may be possible. The real problem is power and heat.

@talk about DQ sales

Honest question: Didn't DQIX sell pretty well in the West? I remember seeing something that claimed that DQIX really well in Europe (could've been a certain infamous site though), over 500k iirc.

A lot of people have suggested it may actually be easier to scale down ps4/720 games to Wii u than it is to scale up ps360 games

What is this shit about 360 having a bad launch? Call of duty 2, Condemned, PGR3, Perfect dark zero, Kameo, as well as like 15 xbla titles (including Geometry wars), and it was followed up soon with Dead or alive 4 in December, and Oblivion, Graw, Dead rising, Gears of War and Viva pinata the following year, and that's just off the top of my head. I don't care if you don't like some of those games, they were good games for their genres and mostly exclusive too -_- The Wii U isn't even close to that launch, and if you want to pull the reviews card you can too, as all of those games likely fared as good or better than the exclusive U launch titles. Oh and visually, they look comparable or even better than the exclusive on the U, 7 years ago. They also had actual online modes which most U games seem to lack entirely.

Playstation consoles have weak launches, but both the Xbox and Xbox 360, Gamecube, N64, Dreamcast, etc had much more noteworthy launches than the U, and the main issue is how slim the year coming looks right now.. Hopefully more announcements happen soon.
