How is Xbox One's RGB output still broken?

So I recently ditched the 46" Samsung LED for a Asus VG248QE to use as my main gaming screen but even that looks horrid with PC RGB. I just can't see any benefits to using it. No adjustments helped.

I wish Microsoft would put back in the YCBCR 709/601 options like Xbox 360 had, I used to use 701 on a few games since it looked better for them.

These are the settings i use on the Asus:

Splendid= Theater Mode

Sharpness= 40 (eliminates some minor fringing on text – also use ClearType)

Brightness= 54 (according to preferences and lighting)

Contrast= 43 (default contrast in this preset gives major shade crushing)

Color Temp= User Mode

Red= 100

Green= 95

Blue= 93

If your blacks are crushed i guess you should set your console to Limited.

Perhaps your TV brightness is too high? Have you calibrated it?

I've given some half-assed efforts to calibrate it, but every calibration test always requires a tool or two that I don't have. I've also seen one post that said that the XB1 calibration test isn't reliable, but it's the only one I've tried that doesn't require any extra piece of equipment.

Edit: The XB1 calibration tool had me turning down my brightness, but then I couldn't see the squares in the test that was posted here (I could still see the columns in the other test).

This has bothered me as well. My monitor and TV both cutoff the top whites and bottom blacks on RGB (PC). Standard (TV) shows all level bars on both. My TV does not support RGB, of course my monitor does. This makes no sense. Lol

This seems like the thread to post this in but if not let me know

I have a receiver that everything runs through

When I pull up that image to check the full/limited RGB on my ps4, it looks fine. Same with my steam link

My Xbox is set to standard and I can only see the bottom row. Everything else is solidly black. If I switch to PC RGB it's completely black

This is the problem discussed in this thread, right? Is there a solution or is this just the Xbox is fucked up on a hardware level?

Same problem I have, it's really annoying. Settings/gamma are perfect on PS4 but even with Xbox One set to standard it crushes blacks.

I can force my Sony TV to Full which gets rid of the crush but then my blacks become grey. Really wish MS would sort this out.

If you're using a PC monitor to play on, then I don't know since they are usually created for the full color range.

If you have your PS4 or X1 hooked up to a PC monitor, know that essentially all PC monitors default to RGB range Full, so you need to put your PS4 / X1 on RGB Full. And on the flip side, most TV's default to limited. So set your console to limited so that it matches.

We need a new thread with up to date information.

Pretty much all apps (IE and Screenshot viewer through GameDVR) have the crushed blacks like we're talking, but in-game you get almost identical picture on limited/limited and full/full since the fix.

Holy shit this changes everything for me lol. I had been using it wrong all along on PS4.

Gotcha. So on samsung tv, HDMI black level low = full RGB. *mind blown* gotta recalibrate

How did your eyes not find a problem on the PS4? I got confused about this too on one monitor and literally thought it was broken lol

I also don't see why anyone is choosing to use RGB Full on their TVs. If you have the option for limited, just use it instead. The support for RGB Full is important for screens that don't support limited (a lot of monitors)

So Standard on Xbox One and Limited on my Sony TV shouldn't be crushing blacks in game?

The rgb test using Edge still shows a lot of crushed shades, only a few blocks are visible.

Here is the test. Look at this image on your Xbone through Internet Explorer or whatever.

Do you see 4 distinct columns or just a white box and a black box?

So with the correct settings (Limited on both the xbox and the tv) I see both white and light gray boxes but only one black box. When I switch my tv to full (keeping the xbox in limited) I see all 4 like I do on my PC. I suppose that even though I can see all boxes with this configuration something else is probably getting fucked up in the process.

Edit: Image looks as it should (4 Boxes) on my PS4 with the same settings.

Yes, blacks look like shit when you do that. It appears that for games both TV and Xbox set to limited is best.

I've resigned myself to the fact that this isn't "broken" but is a "feature." By that I mean I don't expect it to ever be fixed, which sucks. It boggles my mind that this is still an issue.

I feel you. I play on a 4k TV and the black crush is sooo noticeable. Ugh.

Now slow yo roll.

I realized this whack ass crap back in the day and it was crushed black for days and all that but I just turned it back to limited and set my TV to auto RGB instead of On.

After doing that it looks fine again. Sure the range isn't full but at least the blacks aren't crushed.

Now, on your 4K TV can you not have it set to a limited mode or something? Why you gots to have all dem Crush sodas?

You are correct in your assessment. The PS4 is doing things properly. In that when your TV/PC Monitor is matching up with your PS4's RGB settings (be it limited or full) you should see all 4 boxes, with no alteration to the indicated RGB range. I.e, no washed out image, or no crushed blacks.

The Xbox One fucks up, in that even though your TV/PC monitor is matching with your Xbox, you still can't see all 4 boxes. And the only way that you can is if you deliberately mismatch the RGB settings to get a washed out look. That is -not- appropriate, obviously.

The best thing to do is set your TV to limited. Set your PS4 to limited. And set your Xbox One to RGB TV (limited). Don't fuck up your audio / video set up just because MS can't get their shit together. You can mitigate things a bit by increasing the brightness a little bit on your TV that has the Xbox One input. But at this point, know that most multiplatform games (and now Xbox exclusives) can be run better on your PS4 and gaming PC (if you have them).

That's what I said. Apps like IE etc. are fucked regardless of what you do. You would have to fuck up your settings (use limited on a full screen) to get the apps to display properly.

Hence why I think this thread needs to burn and another one made, because people calibrating with picture viewer or IE are killing their game calibration.

This thread literally references people to view calibration pictures through IE. It's not only misleading, it's just plain wrong. There is an issue, but it isn't this.

Apologies for bumping this thread, but I was wondering if these issues were ever resolved?

From what I understand the full/limited range options on Xbox One are still broken?

Also ever since the Xbox 360 Microsoft have used a non-standard gamma curve, and although this is probably a hardware issue it would be great if the Xbox One X could resolve it. (Perhaps by switching to the older non-standard gamma curve for games produced prior to the Xbox One X's release)

Would love to know if these issues have been addressed with the Xbox One X (Even if they have to switch to using the non-standard gamma curve for games produced prior to the Xbox One X's release)

I've been playing on my Xbox for the last week or so because of the Ultimate sale, I picked up W3, and moving through Novigrad is really quite bad. It's incredibly dark.

I know this is only one example, but for me black crush is still very much a problem.
