• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

How long have you kept the same online name / tag.

I've been called Shannow online since 1998 playing Team Fortress Classic on the PC - here's a seasons results table for my old clan the Disposable Heroes from our 1999 season in the UKTFCL http://uktfcl.far2cool.com/clan/230/disposable-heroes

So in 17 years I've never felt the urge to change my online name - I've used it in Counterstrike leagues, SOCOM leagues and is my PSN since PS3 launch. I've had it for so long it'd be weird to have anything else. The only concession I've had to make is retaining the DHC as Shannow had already been taken.

So do you swap and change names? Or find one and stick with it forever?

Edit: Why did you pick it? Do you often get called something else as people either don't know how to say it or just read it wrong?

Jon Shannow is a fiction character from a trilogy of books by David Gemmell who was my fav author at the time. I always get called Shadow or Shannon (or frigging Sharon occasionally!) and I pronounce it Shanno whilst people often say Shan Now...

I could never find a decent name for a while, but I've been using some form of my current name for what must be at least 6 or 7 years now.

Uhm... technically I've had my general handle since about 1996. I am Zeo/ZeoH in most places. To think it's been almost 20 years... o_o

I've used Inuhanyou as my tag for just over 14 years. Ever since i started going on internet forums and such, and that's all i usually go by with my gaming tags, or small variations like MinuhanyouM or Inutaihanyou if Inuhanyou is taken. If you see one on the net, its likely me

Been using MrChowderClam since I built my first gaming PC in '06. I got lucky and the name was available on PSN when I got my PS3 a few years later :3

Edit: but some low-down good-for-nothing gaffer stole my name on GAF so I had to put an S at the end

*shakes fist*

Must be over a decade now. Managed to use it for every service so far, PSN etc. It was once already taken for a game character name when I signed up. That angered me haha

Hm. I've been Banzai for about 10 years now, I think. Used to just go by "???" in my Counter Strike days because I was too lazy to think of a name haha

I think since around '98, used it for a now defunct email account. Didn't come up with many other names since then. Unfortunately a lot of times its already taken because it's a common nickname for "Jörg" or "Jochen", while also meaning "stupid / lazy person" (which is why I picked it).

I used to have the same name on everything, until I noticed that anyone I met in real life could easily search that name on Google and learn things about me that maybe I'd like to keep private. Now I use different names for different websites.

I've been using Panther2103 since I started playing online games with the original Starcraft in 98. No idea where it came from I was pretty small, so probably just a random animal and random numbers, who knows.

I've been using zulux21 since late may 1999.

I know the date well, because that is when cartoon network ran DBZ20XL on toonami and I originally wanted that as my user name (I was 12 at the time :P) but since it was already taken on aol.com I made a different version of it and it became zulux21

it's a bit more clear if it's typed dbz20xl though
I dropped the db left me with z20xl the l looks like a 1 already thus I increased 20 to 21 and moved it to the end giving me zx21 decided I still liked the l and stuck it in the middle, zlx21 and then liked the letter U for a vowel thus zulux21.

weird name alteration aside I still like the user name and still use it for most things lol.

This one specifically since the Xbox 360 released in 2005. At the time I was too dumb to figure out how to transfer my OG Xbox account "SilentParasite" over. It's just a randomly-generated name I thought sounded kind of cool at the time.

Been using my duel personas (Dusk Golem and AestheticGamer) for six years almost now. Honesty, I'm probably going to use these two names and slight alterations of these names for the rest of my life online.

From 1998ish, until a year or so ago, when I finally had enough of getting accused of pretending to be someone else, having started regularly posting on gaming sites a few years ago, I used to go by Total Biscuit! Guess why I had to change that!

Seriously, fuck that other Total Biscuit, I loved that name, and since it or a variation are my PSN, Nintendo and Xbox live ID's, it still gets me accused of trying to impersonate the git.

It's not like it's even original! Just an obscure Discworld joke name! And as far as I can tell, I was using it first, over a decade before I even heard of the YouTube tosser!

So yeah, I've been going by Stilton Disco instead since signing up to Gaf, a decision I'm even happier about since the other guy started supporting GG!

I was creating names based on my fav tv shows that I would lose interest in. Horrible for longevity. Neo Zuko was the iconic name designed to withstand the battering of time. It combines two things I'll never out grow. Neo from the Matrix and Zuko from Avatar. Plus it flows nicely as they both end in "o", and if someone takes my name I can replace the o's with zeros. I've been using it for about 5 years.

Well when i first signed up for GAF it was CrackaFett. Years later I used my FiOS email and made a new account not realizing i could change the email of the previous account. So I had to put the 3. I got this name from my love of Bobafett and well I'm white. I've been using this name since about 06/07.

I was first known as Demonheart, then The Reb1rth, then Major Rebirth, and finally settled on Militaratus. Been Militaratus for close to 5 years.

Finally a name that only I use.

panzone since 2004, when I had my first Internet access. Since then I'm using this nick for everything, from forums to github.

Have been using the online handle EteRnal PAL for everything since 2000 or 2001. It's my gamertag, my social media name and forum username.

I came up with this name because I love the word "eternal". The R in EteRnal is capitalized because at the time, I was into the whole import racing scene with the type-R, etc. As for the word PAL, the P is my first initial, the A stands for "and", the L is my wife's (who was my gf at the time, she's my first and only) first initial.

So yeah, a bit of a sappy meaning behind my name, but it also sorta tied into my personality of being known as a very nice and friendly guy. When playing online, my friends call me E-PAL for short, kinda catchy actually.
