How many games would it take to justify your console purchase?

For me, these days, it's just one. I have disposable income and I'm passionate about gaming, so if there's a game I want to play, I will do what's necessary to play it.

Bought a Wii U first 2 years after release because that's when it started to have too many great games (mabye 5 more or less must haves). Don't own a One or PS4 yet for this reason, if they both were backwards compatible then I would have a much bigger incentive to get them (I know Xone is starting to become that, but not yet). They're also too expensive here as of now.

10 games that I like so much they become special to me would probably be a good bar to set (one becomes picky about consoles when you can get one by saving up allowance), but that would be something I would evaluate at the end of the life of a console or handheld.

During its lifespan, 5 games that are special to me (doesn't have to be exclusive) will justify a console for me.

~5 or so top games out already, with another ~5 confirmed to be coming down the pipeline. Of course, these 10 games also need to be games I can't play on a system I have already.

Number of games doesn't matter nearly as much as the amount of time spent playing the console. Sometimes I can get a lot of mileage out of a handful of games. Sometimes I'm swarming in games but still only play each for a few hours.

I've put a considerable amount of time into both my wii u and ps4, and the number of games I've played isn't that high overall.

5 is a good number as I can't justify buying a console just for one game alone.

Being backward compatible helps too.

honestly, just 1 really good game

it's a really hard thing to quantify though because it depends on the quality of each game. if I had 3 solid games that might not feel like enough but 1 really good game and 2 solid games would probably feel like plenty.

I'm gonna go with 3.5

One. I know more good games will come at some point. I never owned a console where I owned only one game for it. Usually 10-15 minimum per system.

Something close to 10 between already released or upcomming (but confirmed) games.

Then again, I buy consoles for more than just specific games. Like the Ps4 for example, I didn't get it for one particular game but just knowing it would have great third party support and probably some good exclusives (other than Bloodborne the exclusives part hasn't turned out to be that good though)

If there's a game I want to play, and I lack the means to play it, I acquire said means by way of exchanging money for hardware. To me, a console is a tool and not an investment.

For me, its 3 really good games that I can't play on my other systems.

For the PS4...

2 or 3 "must-have"
Kingdom Hearts 3
Uncharted 4
MGS 5

A couple of "great to have"
Battlefront 3
Infamous Second Son
Bloodborne

Wii back in 2008...
- Smash Bros
- Gamecube retrocompatibility
- Multiplayer

PSP also in 2008...
- Crisis Core
- GoW Chains Of Olympus
- FF Tactics WoTL
(new translation + new jobs + balthier = profit!)

It's not the quantity, it's the quality.

We all know and apply this, but the point of this thread is to quantify it.

I won't ever buy a system until there's at least three games I'd want to own on it. Any less I consider to be irresponsible spending.

There's always a few worth playing after you find that "tipping point" game

I wanted to play Fatal Frame, for instance, the other Wii U games are just fun bonuses. If it wasn't Fatal Frame, it would have been Fire Emblem.

I would probably buy anything to play a new mainline Dragon Quest game

I need time to play, not goods games to play, those are everywhere.

so I will buy a console if I know for a fact I'll have two peacful months to play a game (action, adventure, RPG)
.
time

Normally just one great game.

Xbox - Knights Of The Old Republic
PS3 - MGS4
Gamecube - Mario Strikers

However ...

PS4 - I thought Bloodborne, but once I heard it was really short I need 3 really good games, but since most are on PC I'll hold out for KH3, so yeah . . . 1 game haha.

when a digital game you downloaded (15GB+) is taking 2 hours to install so it gives you enough time to think about life and what are you doing with it

to me this is enough to make the upgrade

All I need is ONE game.

For when I had an Xbox 360, Gears of War was that game.

For my Wii, Smash Bros Brawl was that game.

For my future Wii U/NX (or whatever the fuck Nintendo is going to do), it will be Smash 4

For my PS3, I thought God of War III was that game... but then this little gem by the name of Uncharted 2 came around

For PS4, Uncharted 4, FFVII, etc

For PC, the primary reason to get a strong GPU actually didn't have anything to with a particular game. I wanted one to be able to play SMG at perfect IQ and other multiplatform games better than on the PS4 or Xbox One.

Nowadays I buy consoles without any good games for them and games for consoles I don't own. And games I already own but had forgotten about. There's no method to the madness anymore.

As others have said, just one really good game that I really want to play and can't play anywhere else. I don't agonize over purchases for entertainment stuff like consoles, calculating how many exclusive games it will have versus another console etc. I LOVE gaming so if there is a game I really want I'm not gonna deny myself that experience.

I really want a large strong library for my console but in reality in only takes a good few I find interest in to buy the console.

Depends on the game. Some games have more weight than others. Mainline Final Fantasy or Gran Turismo is enough for me to buy a console.

All it takes for me is one or two games that I really want. I already have 2 of 3 this gen because of Mario Kart, Halo, and a few others. I will make it 3 for 3 this holiday.

One. Really good one.

I bought WiiU for MH3U.

I bought PS4 for ND games.

Xbone doesn't have that kind of game for me yet. Sunset Overdrive is the only game I want to play. If Scalebound turns out to be really good then I might bite.
