How much do you walk in a normal day?

After talking to someone and hearing them say they would rather drive their kids around for trick or treating than walk around their neighborhood, it got me thinking about how little people walk nowadays.

So, I am wondering how much do you walk during a normal day? Little, or a lot?
 
My campus is huge so I walk alot.
 
Some days I walk a block to the nearest gas station to get a Gatorade and a couple maple glazed Krispy Kremes, but not every day.

Also, I work on my feet.
 
A shit ton. I'm a super in construction and my project's site is 35 acres.

When we were building Yankee Stadium, I clocked myself with a pedometer. At work alone I was logging 16 miles per day, walking. Comfortable boots are a must!
 
Two miles to and from work. So at least four, then add in all the time walking around the office and house. I dunno, maybe I should wear my poke-walker.

Not a lot. I just don't have that far to walk unless I go out of my way to do so.

It always makes me shake my head when I see kids driving around the parking lot outside a building trying to get a parking spot instead of driving maybe 100 feet down the road and parking in the overflow lot. Unless you're disabled, elderly or don't know any better then walk! It won't kill you.
 
Tons. I should get a pedometer to get an accurate estimate.

In live in NYC, so shopping, errands, eating out, etc. have me walking all the time. I also have a stand up desk. And my apartment building is on a hill.

I would love to leave NYC someday, since it's so damn expensive, but I hate that most American city planning is so automobile focused. I prefer walkable cities.

Yep, no worst that people using the elevator in a gym to go down a 2 story building.
 
Probably half a mile total during my commute on a weekday with a lot more on the weekends, depending on the weather. Boston is a walkable place so it works out well. Not sure what the standard walking around the office adds to the totals.
 
45 minutes to an hour if I have classes, if I don't then a lot less. My campus is pretty big, but I like it that way

When I'm not at school, it really depends, I live in a small suburb and have to drive everywhere

I try to walk a square block at work during the day, at least once and twice if I can get out. Then I have a cardio thing at home that I do every day; it's kind of hard to read though because what it calls a mile is more like a fifth of a mile. Not sure what's up with that. Anyway, I try to do five of those and call it a mile. Sometimes I can get more. It also has a bit of a stair stepper element to it, so it's considerably more intense than walking.
 
An hour or two a day. I enjoy walking immensely.

It's a shame the 3DS has a 10 play coins per day limit, or else I would be rolling in them.
 
To answer my own question, I walk more than a mile a day including walking to the bus stop, walking around the city, and walking on campus. It could be more, but I never really measured it.
 
I used to walk a lot because I ran into the same question myself about a year and a half ago. All people do is sit around because of the luxury of computers and sit down entertainment. I said fuck that dude, there's a world outside and I'm gonna walk around and savor the earth and nature.

And then I had my heart broken. And I became introverted and started eating junk food and became too ashamed to go outside looking the way I did. But now that is changing. My body is recovering and I'll be back on my earth. Lesson learned.
 
It's a sad fact of reality that much of the construction in the U.S. in the last century (suburban sprawl) is designed to prevent people from walking to places easily and accessibly. So if someone says they "don't walk" we can understand that there's perhaps a structural problem at play, rather than assuming the person is lazy. In my neighborhood there's simply no place to walk - no pleasing paths or nice architecture to look at, just miles of cookie cutter houses and a trailer park delimited by a blacktop highway (trenches full of highway litter run alongside it).That said, I walk maybe about 1/2 mile to a 1 mile every day for leisure.
 
1 hour walk to school and back, 40-50 minutes walking my dog and usually at least an 30 minute walk by myself in the evening. If I have a lunch break at school I use that time to go for a walk in a nearby park. So, quite a lot.
 
Plenty, I live in heart of the city and my workplace isn't that far away (30 min. walk) so I don't even own a car these days. If I don't feel like walking I take the bike :) Only negative thing is grocery shopping but I manage.

How do people walk their dogs there?
 
Um.. about 3km to school (about 25 min brisk walk), and maybe another 2-3 k throughout the day at school depending on the classes/schedule. If it's a clinical day, I walk more.

I usually take the bus home (lazy at the end of the day), but if it's nice out, or I'm feeling energetic, I'll walk.. Waiting for the bus, taking it etc still takes like 20 mins, so walking is only 5-10 mins slower.

I LOVE living close to school. I hated my 40 min drive to university from my parent's place.

Thats true, there are a lot of roads in my city that do not even have sidewalks on them even though they go through residential neighborhoods.
 
I walk tons. Sometimes I'm shocked because I walk with friends and a couple of blocks seems like a huge distance to themÂ… That's really sad. I often walk 50, 60, 70 blocks a day.
 
A decent amount I guess? It is mostly due to a large campus, classes always being on one end of the campus, and work and other classes on the other end of the campus, means I always end up walking from one to the other end.
 
a whole lot. living in new york city means tons of walking, dodging taxi cabs + Chinese delivery bikes and climbing uneven staircases.

and that's the way i like it. :D
 
I should get myself a pedometer. Then I could add more points to my Fitocracy score. :P

Probably walk about a mile or two on a daily basis.
 
At LEAST one mile per day. I should get a pedometer, it might be more. I work a retail job at a big box store so it's definitely at least a mile a day.
 
I walk to the bathroom, the kitchen and my home office. Probably like 50ft a day

I take the bus to work, which involves about 20 minutes walking individually there and back, not much, however - I'm on my feet all day in work, no sitting down at all on the job so generally on my feet for 7 hours on a longer day
 
Ever since that one day I spent in NYC where I walked from 33rd street down to the chinatown arcade, back to 46th street and down to 33rd again I stopped being concerned about walking. I don't walk a lot but I'm not adverse to it. I have a car and most of the places I need to go are incredibly far away from where I live so it's just more convenient honestly. As for work out reasons, I don't go to a gym yet but I plan to start on monday or something.
 
I get out a train station earlier so I can walk a bit more, otherwise I wouldn't walk that much, especially if I drive to work.
 
I walk almost constantly in my work. From one area of the factory to another. No idea about the distance, maybe like 4-5 km's per day? Hard to guess without a proper measuring tool.
 
3DS says about 10000-20000 steps per day. My accommodation is about half an hour's walk from the lecture theatres, and I have lectures every day but Sunday.
 
As a typical software engineer, I don't really get much exercise (I'm pretty skinny to begin with). However, I do try to walk around the office for 15 minutes every couple of hours or so to prevent blood clots in the legs.
