How often are you renting games?

I've still got a local place that rents games and movies, so I do it sometimes. But mostly I just buy the games I want, and if I don't want something enough to buy it, I don't play it.

probably been 10 years since i rented a game, once all of the Blockbusters,Movie Galleries Etc. dried up i just would buy a game and play it, especially now with youtube and all it's pretty easy to know if a game is good or terrible.

How often are you renting games?

I haven't rented a game in years,
(Block buster days)
I got a free game rental from T-mobile but I honestly don't feel like renting a game
and dealing with the return hassle.

If you rent a game there is no way to block trophies data right?

It would be cool if PSN offered a service like this?
but I'm not talking about streaming it either like psnow.

What do you mean by block trophies data? Are you worried you wouldn't be able to 100% the game and people could see it? Just enjoy the games.

I use gamefly. I buy games on release day that I know I'm gonna play for 30+ hours, but I like to just try out tons of other games. As long as you aren't concerned with getting games right on release day, it's a great service. I just sent back 1, 2 Switch for example. I knew I absolutely did not wanna buy it, but it was fun to try for a night or two. Gonna do the same with Arms, etc.

It's also nice to not feel like I have a backlog. I wasn't sure on Prey. Rented it from Gamefly and thought it was ok but didn't love it. If I had bought it I'd feel compelled to beat it even though I didn't love it. Since I just rented it I just put it back in the mail, no backlog building. Works great.

Been a GameFly member for over five years.

Pretty much only rent games. I only buy digital-only games that are on massive sale.

I would still rent games if I could. The ability to was basically ripped away from me ~5 years ago here in Canada. No more Blockbuster, and even Red Box imploded over here (not that their selection was worth a damn... no The Last of Us at launch? GTFO)

Maybe there's a rent by mail service but that's a barrier to impulse rent on a Friday night.

The last 3 games I rented was Mafia 3, FFXV and HZD from Redbox.

I'm going to continue renting in the future for titles that I want to play, but don't feel like it's worth it to own.

Skyrim for PS3. Ended up buying it in PC because I didn't want to deal with the PS3 problems.

Before that I don't remember.

I joined a game subscription service recently, with a plan for renting out as many games in a month as possible with two games at a time. There is a four day delay between sending a game back and getting a new one (six days if a weekend is involved) and newer games are usually rented out to other people. It's pretty good for a way to try out older games but I'll probably exhaust their back catalogue of games that interest me in a couple more months.

I think I bought a game used and then returned it to GameStop a couple years ago, which is my version of "renting," now. Not really much reason for me to do that any more since I feel like I have a good idea of what I want to buy. Only reasons I rented when I was a kid was that I didn't have my own money and I didn't know my own taste in games as well.

I haven't rented a game since the N64.

Same here. Some of my best memories are from renting games - called in a hold on Goldeneye the day it came out at blockbuster (i guess you could do that, i asked my mom to I was 13), rented it for 3 days and played it for at least 12 hours the first day with my friend. Playing video games for that long wasn't really commonplace for me or people I knew at the time.

The last game I rented was last year and it was from a redbox. Let me play through the Titanfall 2 Campaign on the cheap without having to buy the game outright. Not a real big fan of online MP military shooters in the same vein, so a rental was well worth it for me just to experience the SP without forking over the full asking price for a portion of the content.

It's been at least 15 years since the last time I rented a game, and most likely a couple years longer than that. I used to rent games all the time during the 90s though, especially from the early-to-mid 90s.

I used gamefly to rent The Order. Was glad I rented it but I ended up forgetting to cancel my sub for like 3 months and never even used it.

Once or twice a year from Redbox on the rare occasion that I'm interested in something, but very uncertain and a bit skittish with my money at the time.

Last two were Ghost Recon Wildlands (hated it, saved me from a digital buy) and TMNT Mutants In Manhattan (dug it... bought it when it was around $20 physical, then again digital for $8 right before it got delisted).

Last game I rented was a gamecube one, as I remember going to gamecrazy every saturday and the guy letting me play some of the used games for a couple of hours. As much as I would want to try a game before I purchase with a service such as Gamefly, game prices go on sale fast enough to discourage me from renting.

Last time was 2008 or 2009 for Thanksgiving and I needed to rent some games for family. Only place was Blockbuster and it was obscene amount of money, like $17 for a rental. I had A GameStop reward sub at that point in my life because I regularly exploited promotions and flipped merchandise so we just bought some used games on the cheap and whatever I didn't like would later become trade fodder.

Been renting games since about 2014 on Gamefly (also in the late 90's/early 2000's from Blockbuster)

As long as I play at least 4 $60 games from Gamefly in a year I'm saving money annually over having bought them instead so I think it's a ridiculously good deal.

I've also been able to take risks on games like No Man's Sky without feeling burned or play games I normally wouldn't like:

Dishonored 2, Yakuza 0, Watchdogs 1/2, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Mafia 3, Deus Ex:Mankind Divided, Doom, Far Cry 4/Primal Just Cause 3, Need for Speed Rivals, Assassins Creed *Insert all* etc, etc, etc, etc.

I would have only experienced a fraction of the games I've played if I didn't rent from Gamefly. And I mainly only play single player experiences, so unless I know I'm going to go back to a game multiple times, (i.e Witcher 3, The Last of Us, Uncharted 4) I don't buy them.

If I buy a game, that means that it's something I really really feel am going to be invested in.

I can't remember the last time. Was probably at a blockbuster. When I was a kid, my play time was about half rentals and half owned or shared games.

edit: wait wait no. When gaf was getting all hype for soul caliber 4, I felt like I was getting sucked in so I went down to blockbuster and rented it. I knew I wouldn't want it for 60 bucks but I had to play it right then.

My local public library has some PS3 games that I rented recently. Prior to that, maybe early 2000's with the last Blockbuster in my area.

I haven't rented games since LoveFilm stopped doing game rentals.

I used to rent a lot of PS3 and 360 games when they were a thing. Ever since then I've been much more conservative with what games I play and what I spend money on.

Boomerang rentals were a godsend, Always got games on release.

Then i found the primary account share trick and went all digital, Otherwise i'd still be using the rental services.

Last game I rented was The Order: 1886

Finished it in a day and felt terrible for not buying it... I know I can still buy it, but it wouldn't be the same.
