How often do you call in sick to work?

Can I stand up? Good.enough to work. Sit up straight? I'll be in at noon. Can't sit up? I'll consider not going in at all.

I hate taking time off.

Instead people that keep using sick days when their not sick shift their work onto other people killing those people morale.

It like ow look Rick called in hungover again, goodie now I get to work rebuilding theses oily shitty gearboxes short handed.

Well it definitely depends on the workplace. I'm in software development and my deadlines range from a few days to weeks/months. Taking a sick day usually wouldn't impact anyone around me in any meaningful way.

Uni student. So whenever I want hehe

I applied to a job at school and I'm still allowed to not go to work or take breaks as long as I want, but I don't get paid if I'm off.

Honestly I probably use a sick day every 2 months. It's pretty consistent. Usually on some week day when I end up drinking too much and just not feeling it in the morning.

Also has to do with just being bored with my job in general and don't feel like it's that big of a deal if I'm not there once in a while.

Edit: I have a lot of days built up. Probably over a month and a half of days. I kinda use it cuz I have issues with depression. I've been talked to about using them so much but I really don't care at this point.

I'm sure your colleagues appreciate that.

sorry not meaning to rag on you as that line of thinking is common, but its a pet peeve of mine when somebody comes into work horribly and contagiously sick.

I see your point but I'm generally working alone so there isn't much of a chance to get anyone sick.

Only when i'm sick and doesn't feel really well. Which is like once a year or something.

Regarding the offloading of work onto fellow colleagues (when sick) it works both ways. I happily pick up the slack when they are off as I know they will do the same for me when I call in.

At this job it's been about once a month, although lately I've found work to be more bearable so I'm hoping to make it less frequent, unless I'm actually sick. Gotta save that PTO for a trip

It was bad when I was growing up though. I'd usually get my mom to let me stay home once every 2 weeks or so. College was a little better, I skipped a lot of classes in the first couple of years but during the last year I had much better attendance

I dunno. Maybe.

I take sick days. Well I've only taken one but I've only been working 2 months at my internship. I was actually sick. I'm not ashamed to call in sick if I'm sick. I don't want to get other people sick and I will do all my work wrong if I'm sick.

Make that two. I called in today because I literally have not been able to leave the toilet all night long. Still just a few feet away from my toilet. Gaviscon, Pepto Bismol, Zantac not working. Gonna try to get some Immodium. I think I have a stomach bug :l

I don't know how you people don't get sick in _____ years. Shit just happens. I think I caught this bug at the gym yesterday (and, knowing that working out lowers your immune system, I'm not surprised). Ugh.

Like the OP, I work in a government Agency (in Canada).

I get 15 paid sick days a year. I am very fortunate.

Just had a look at the remaining sick days I have in my "bank." I have about 110 days left. I've worked at my agency for 12 years. That means I have used about 65 sick days over 12 years or so.

I've averaged, then, about 5.5 sick days a year. I use my sick days when I'm sick. Mostly when I have back spasms or a really bad cold.

At the beginning, I did try to come into work sick because I felt guilty. But my managers encouraged me to stay home during those times. I learned that there really wasn't a point to coming in sick (at least to where I work). Good managers actually discouraged it.

I wish everyone was so lucky.

Once, when I was in the hospital.

Also the token lol at sick day allowances. I had my induction at my new job last week and the HR guy told me how no one should come in sick because they don't want others to get ill.

My job gives me 5 sick days a year so I use 5 sick days a year. They ask no questions and basically tell us use them or lose them.

Never called out sick in close to 20 years of working; have left early two or three times due to throwing up. Sick days carry over, no clue how many I have banked (been here 10 yrs).

Vacation and personal days don't carry over, I use every single one of those. Just schedule them in advance.

Just wanted to quote you to say I loooooooove your Username.

On topic, I never call in sick unless actually sick.

Which is like never. <knock on wood>

many people depend on me, if i call sick they wouldnt even know where to report if they were sick.

on the other side i can go out, early, do nothing in the office, or just browse GAF until dinner time.

No sick days here.

But, as others have stated here, I hate taking time off. Or at least I would hate taking time off since I've never asked for days off. I work in a very small office, so taking a day or two off during the busy season can mean tons of paper work to get to. I've seen it happen to my coworkers.

I will only call in sick if there is a legitimate chance that my co-workers will be infected by my coming into work. Otherwise I'm there, no sense in being miserable at home when you can be miserable while you work. I don't have defined 'Sick Days' anyway.

I don't.

I go to my doctor and get a line for depression and take a month off.

I'm a grad student. I don't really get sick days and barely have a regular schedule anyway. I get 2 weeks of vacation a year, but I don't take more than 3-4 days. They don't "rollover" or anything either, they're just sort of an unspoken thing. I don't get sick very often and if I do it's just a mild cold.

Sick days are fucking ridiculous, if you're sick you're sick. But here in Austria we also have 25 fully paid vacation days by law lol. The US is so far behind in some ways.

On topic:

I was sick like 10 days in 3 years and an almost 2 month stay in the hospital. Again, fully paid.

Most all jobs I have had never paid me when I called in sick. So I would work even when I was sick. Hooray for temp jobs!

The best part is the employer would encourage employees to stay home if sick ( full timers got paid sick leave) so that they wouldn't infect others and decrease productivity. 10-20% of the workforce was temps and they all behaved like me. It might have saved them money to give us paid sick leave.

I have over 500 hours of sick time but that's because even when I'm sick I usually work from home a little bit and if I even work for a few minutes it counts as a full day.

We don't get sick days, just a total group pool of Pto which is the best way. Sick or not I can take off. It is use it or lose it.

Almost never, but I don't really get anything beyond intestinal bugs or seasonal allergies.

Even if I were to call in sick, unless I were bed-bound, I'd be expected to WFH unless I was actually at a doctor's office.

A few times a year if need be. Most of the time I'm genuinely sick, but I usually call off just because I don't want to crawl out of bed maybe one or two day a year at most. Banking seems good if you ever end up needing to be out for an extended amount of time.

Can you use these days as vacation as well OP, or are they just for when you are sick? Where I work, our sick days and vacation days are lumped together, but we don't have rollover. Calling out sick means getting paid which is good, but you end up eating into your vacation time which is generally bad.

I called in today because I was throwing up all night but still need to go for my own sake because I've got so much shit to do.

If you're sick AT my work, they let you off there's really no limit. Just don't abuse it, which I don't.

I worked through the flu, a messed up foot, and the day after a surgery and that's all after walking to work in 15 feet of snow uphill both ways.

I don't get paid to take time off for silly things like vacations, illness, or breaks.
