How Often Should You Replace Your Laptop?

I got my first laptop in summer 2008 and replaced it with another one early 2013. That's roughly five years. My first one started getting real sloppy by its final year, which is why I decided it was time for a new one. The current laptop works great, but I'm thinking I should probably get a new one sometime next summer-ish.

What does everyone think? Is 4-5 years a good gap?

You sound like you just want an excuse to get a new expensive toy. Which is aok, but it is just a question of your finances and the opportunity cost of buying a new one.

I got my laptop in 2010 and it's still going strong except for the battery. I put windows 10 on it and it seemed to make everything work a bit better.

I got a new one this week and had the last one for 7 years. It has a pretty good run, but wasn't running Windows 10 and everything else well, plus part of the thing that attacked the back of the screen to the screen was somewhat falling apart.

About every 4 years, or at least that's about as long as they've typically lasted for me before they start to die.

For me it's about 4-5 years, which I think it is reasonable. I bought my current laptop early this year, and the previous one in mid-2011. It developed heating problems and started shutting down by itself, so when I couldn't stand it anymore I replaced it.

Been replacing them about every 3 years, but I had limited funds for my first three laptops (~400 each) and had to skimp on build quality. For my most recent (bought it a month ago) I dumped 1200 bucks on it. Hopefully I won't need a new one for a good long time.

Since laptops are very cheap in the US compare to over here, I often find myself buying one whenever I'm vacationing. Which happens like every 4-6 years anyway.

I bought a Toshiba laptop in 2008 coffee was spilled all over it just last year and it's still going OK to this day which amazes me it's mainly used in the kitchen now cause battery is dead.

I did buy a Sony laptop in 13 cause the Toshiba was getting a little slow running some stuff.

My 13 inch Macbook Pro from 2011 is still going strong. Upgraded it to 8 GB memory and a SSD last year and I plan to keep it a little longer. The only real downside is that the resolution is very low. But I only use it on the couch for browsing and watching TV shows so no real rush to get it replaced.

My 15 inch Dell laptop from work (which I also got in 2011) got replaced 2 months ago because the battery died within 2 hours. I switched to a 12 inch Lenovo which is a lot easier to carry with me on the bike.

The work laptop gets used nearly 40 hours a week and that is really noticeable on the battery compared to the mac, which I maybe use 4 hours a week tops.

My work laptop is almost always connected to a docking station, not sure how that impacts the battery life.
