my fat 60gb from launch still works fine
I've got an 80gb (motorstorm bundle) that is still chugging along.
I've had to replace the blu-ray laser, and replaced the solder.
The fans get pretty loud, but I still tear through games no problem.
What's the cause of YLOD anyway?
What's the cause of YLOD anyway?
Generally it's because of the thermal compound drying up and not transferring heat to the heatsink anymore or just excess dust causing the internals to overheat and fry.
I see. How do you normally prevent this?

Funny this thread pops up after my phat 60gb ps3 seems to be dying. Could be wrong though. It's freezing at the end credits to shadow of the colossus so I can't get my trophy :'(
I've read it's just my hdd going but I've not long put a 250gb hdd in so that's that theory gone! Sad times can't really afford to buy a new ps3 right now and I have a huge backlog on it!
Also don't know if it matters, but I have one of the built in Japan ones.
My 80GB phat died recently and Sony are offering me £110 for a refurbished console, so it might be worth you contacting them and seeing what they offer you.
Of course they don't refurbish phats anymore, so you'd either get a Slim or a Super Slim. I've been told it's the Slims they give out.
Thing is though I bought my 60gb phat off a friend years back so it's got zero warranty. Or will Sony still sort me out with a refurb?!
Mine ran out of warranty years ago (2009). Sony still offered me a refurb.
